Chapter 20: The Witness Who Disappeared

The name was Olivia Hayes.

I stared at it.

A name from the party.

A name Maya had mentioned weeks earlier.

At the time, it meant nothing.

Now it was the center of everything.

“Who is Olivia?”” I asked.

Jordan looked thoughtful.

“She was there.””

Maya nodded slowly.

“She was friends with Ethan.””

“Close friends?””

Maya hesitated.

“I don’t know.””

That answer bothered me.

Because everyone connected to this story seemed to exist in shadows.

Nobody was exactly what they appeared to be.

Officer Hill searched his notes.

“Olivia Hayes.””

He flipped through pages.

“Seventeen years old.””

“Is she involved?””

“We don’t know.””

The phrase was becoming impossible to hear.

Not because it wasn’t true.

Because uncertainty had become our normal.

“Where is she now?”” I asked.

Officer Hill looked up.

“That’s the problem.””

“What?””

“She’s missing.””

The room froze.

“When?””

“Two days ago.””

“Why didn’t anyone report it?””

“Her parents thought she was staying with friends.””

I looked at Maya.

“Did you know?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“Did Ethan know?””

“I don’t know.””

Jordan stood.

“We need to find her.””

Officer Hill immediately looked at him.

“No.””

“But—”

“No.””

Jordan stopped.

“You are not chasing people anymore.””

The words sounded familiar.

My own words.

But this time, Jordan didn’t argue.

He understood.

Because he had spent too long trying to fix everything alone.

That evening, we learned more about Olivia.

She was quiet.

Good grades.

No major problems.

The kind of student who disappeared into the background.

Except Daniel noticed her.

That was the pattern.

He noticed people.

He studied them.

He found what they needed.

Then he used it.

“What did he want from Olivia?”” I asked.

Officer Hill looked through the records.

“According to this, Olivia witnessed something.””

“What?””

“We don’t know.””

“But Daniel called her the final witness.””

“Yes.””

The words stayed with me.

Final witness.

Not victim.

Not suspect.

Witness.

Meaning she knew something.

Something Daniel didn’t want revealed.

That night, Maya came into my office.

“Dad?””

I looked up.

“Yeah?””

She stood there holding something.

A small flash drive.

My heart tightened.

“What is that?””

“I found it.””

“Where?””

“In my old backpack.””

I stared.

“Why didn’t you tell us?””

“Because I didn’t know what was on it.””

“Did you open it?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

I took it carefully.

“Where did you get this?””

She looked uncomfortable.

“Ethan gave it to me.””

The room became silent.

“When?””

“Before the party.””

“Why?””

“He said if something happened, I should keep it safe.””

I stared at the flash drive.

“Did you ask what was on it?””

“Yes.””

“What did he say?””

Maya swallowed.

“He said, ‘Proof.’”

My hands tightened.

We connected it to the computer.

The files appeared.

Videos.

Documents.

Messages.

Hundreds of them.

Officer Hill arrived before we opened anything.

He wanted everything documented.

The first file was a video.

A recording from inside Westbrook High.

Daniel Mercer was sitting across from Ethan.

The quality wasn’t perfect.

But the audio was clear.

Daniel said:

“People don’t believe what they see. They believe what they’re told.””

Ethan looked nervous.

“I don’t want to do this anymore.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“You already started.””

“I made a mistake.””

“No.””

Daniel smiled.

“You made a choice.””

Ethan looked down.

“What about Jordan?””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Jordan is the obstacle.””

The room went cold.

“What do I do?””

Daniel answered:

“Make people question him.””

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

Because now we had proof.

Real proof.

Not assumptions.

Not theories.

Proof.

But then another file opened automatically.

A message history.

Between Daniel and someone else.

Someone we didn’t expect.

The name appeared.

Michael Bennett.

Claire covered her mouth.

“No.””

The messages were old.

Years old.

Daniel had known Michael.

Not recently.

Long before this.

The first message:

“Your sister still doesn’t know.””

The second:

“Keep waiting.””

The third:

“When the time comes, they’ll lose everything.””

I looked at Claire.

She looked devastated.

“Michael?””

But then another message appeared.

One sent only days ago.

From Michael.

To Daniel.

It said:

“I’m done helping you.””

The next message from Daniel was only three words.

“You won’t be.””

The room went silent.

Michael wasn’t the mastermind.

He was involved.

But he had tried to stop.

And Daniel had punished him.

Then the final file opened.

A recording.

Not from Daniel.

Not from Ethan.

From Olivia.

Her voice was shaking.

“If anyone finds this…”

She paused.

May you like

“I know who started everything.””

The recording cut off.
