Chapter 11: The Daughter Who Knew Too Much
Lily sat across from us at the kitchen table.
She looked smaller than usual.
Her feet didn’t touch the floor.
She kept twisting the sleeve of her sweater.
The same sweater she wore the night she saved Jordan from being falsely accused.
I wanted to believe that girl was still the same.
I needed to.
“Lily,” I said gently.
She looked up.
“Yes, Dad?””
I hated how scared she looked.
Not defensive.
Not angry.
Scared.
“Do you know why we’re talking?””
She nodded slowly.
“Because of Jordan’s phone.””
My heart dropped.
“You knew?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I knew you would find out.””
Nobody spoke.
Claire reached for her hand.
“Sweetheart, what happened?””
Lily looked down.
“I messed up.””
The words were quiet.
But they crushed me.
“What did you do?””
She took a shaky breath.
“I saw Maya crying.””
“When?””
“Before the night everything happened.””
She looked at Maya.
“I heard her and Jordan talking.””
Maya closed her eyes.
“And?””
“I thought Jordan was hiding something.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
“Because I heard Maya say, ‘I can’t let Mom and Dad know.’”
My heart hurt.
“She didn’t want to worry us.””
“I didn’t know that.””
Lily wiped her face.
“I thought something bad was happening.””
There it was.
A child’s misunderstanding.
A child trying to protect her sister.
But then came the part that didn’t make sense.
“Why did you use Jordan’s phone?””
Lily became silent.
Too silent.
“Lily.””
She started crying.
“I wanted to prove he wasn’t bad.””
Everyone froze.
“What?””
She looked at Jordan.
“I knew you didn’t believe him.””
Jordan stared.
“I didn’t?””
“You looked scared of him.””
The words hurt.
Because they were true.
“I thought if I found something, I could help.””
“Find what?””
“I looked through his messages.””
Jordan’s face changed.
“You went through my phone?””
“I’m sorry.””
“Lily…”
His voice broke.
Not anger.
Pain.
“I trusted you.””
That sentence destroyed her.
“I know.””
She cried harder.
“I’m sorry.””
I sat down beside her.
“Tell us everything.””
Lily nodded.
“I saw the messages between Jordan and Maya.””
“That’s all?””
She hesitated.
“No.””
My stomach tightened.
“What else?””
“I saw a message from Ethan.””
Jordan immediately looked up.
“What message?””
“I don’t know.””
“Lily.””
“I deleted it.””
The room exploded.
“You what?””
“I thought it was bad.””
“What did it say?””
“I don’t remember.””
“You don’t remember?””
She shook her head.
“I only remember one part.””
“What part?””
She whispered:
“‘Your brother thinks he’s protecting you, but he’s making everything worse.’”
Nobody moved.
That wasn’t from Jordan.
That wasn’t from Maya.
That was someone trying to create distrust.
“Why didn’t you tell us?””
Lily looked ashamed.
“Because then you would know I went through Jordan’s phone.””
“And?””
“I was afraid you would be mad.””
I closed my eyes.
A twelve-year-old girl had made a mistake.
A serious mistake.
But a mistake born from fear.
Fear that our family was breaking.
Fear that she had to fix it herself.
And suddenly I realized something painful.
Every one of my children had been trying to protect someone.
Maya hid her pain.
Jordan carried her secret.
Lily tried to uncover the truth.
And I had spent all this time wondering which one was lying.
When maybe they were all just scared.
Officer Hill asked gently:
“Lily, did you ever send a message from Jordan’s phone?””
Her eyes widened.
“No.””
“Did anyone ask you to?””
“No.””
“Did you give anyone his password?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
I looked at Ryan.
His theory was falling apart.
But he didn’t seem surprised.
That bothered me.
“You knew this?””
Ryan nodded.
“Not all of it.””
“Then what did you know?””
He looked at Lily.
“I knew she saw something.””
“How?””
Ryan hesitated.
“Because Ethan told me.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Why would Ethan tell you?””
Ryan looked uncomfortable.
“Because Ethan was scared.””
“Of what?””
Ryan answered quietly:
“Of the person who told him what to do.””
Everyone went silent.
“The person behind this.””
I stepped closer.
“Who?””
Ryan looked at Jordan.
Then at me.
“I don’t know.””
“You expect us to believe that?””
“I know it sounds impossible.””
“It does.””
“But I’ve been trying to stop this too.””
“Why?””
Ryan looked away.
And for the first time, he looked less like a suspect.
More like someone trapped.
“Because I helped start it.””
The room froze.
“What?””
Ryan swallowed.
“I didn’t make the videos.””
“But?””
“I introduced Ethan to the person who did.””
My heart pounded.
“Who?””
Ryan’s voice dropped.
“The person everyone trusts.””
Nobody spoke.
“Who?””
Ryan looked directly at me.
Then said:
“Your son’s old mentor.””
I frowned.
“Who are you talking about?””
Ryan answered:
“Coach Daniel Mercer.””
The name hit me.
Because I knew him.
Everyone at Westbrook knew him.
He had coached Jordan for years.
He had been like family.
And suddenly, the story changed again.
Because the person controlling everything wasn’t a teenager.
May you like
It was an adult.
Someone who knew exactly how to manipulate children.
