Chapter 18: The Truth Maya Never Saw
The next morning, Maya came downstairs and immediately knew something had happened.
Children always know.
Even when adults think they hide things well.
“What’s wrong?””
Nobody answered.
She looked at Jordan.
Then me.
“Dad?””
I sat down.
“Maya, we need to talk.””
Her expression changed.
“About what?””
“The party.””
She froze.
“I already told you everything.””
“I know.””
“Then why?””
I took a breath.
“Because someone says there’s something you don’t know.””
Her face went pale.
“Who?””
“Daniel.””
The reaction was immediate.
Fear.
Not confusion.
Fear.
“You talked to him?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Maya.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
The panic in her voice worried me.
“What is it?””
“I don’t want to talk about him.””
“Why?””
She looked at Jordan.
Then away.
That was enough.
“You know something.””
She started crying.
“I didn’t want to remember.””
Claire sat beside her.
“Sweetheart.””
Maya covered her face.
“At the party…”
Her voice broke.
“I thought I knew what happened.””
“What do you mean?””
She took a deep breath.
“I thought Ethan was the one who started everything.””
“Wasn’t he?””
“Yes.””
Then she looked at us.
“But someone told him what to do.””
The room went silent.
“Who?””
Maya shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
“Then what did you see?””
She closed her eyes.
“Daniel.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“I saw him there.””
Nobody moved.
“Where?””
“At the party.””
“When?””
“Before everything happened.””
My mind raced.
Daniel.
At the party.
Near the beginning.
Before Maya was hurt.
Before Jordan knew.
Before any of this.
“Why didn’t you tell us?””
“Because I thought I was wrong.””
“Why?””
“Because he acted normal.””
She looked down.
“He talked to everyone.””
That was Daniel.
Always appearing harmless.
“What did he say?””
Maya swallowed.
“I heard him talking to Ethan.””
“What did he say?””
She whispered:
“He said, ‘Make sure they blame the right person.’”
The room went completely silent.
Not one person moved.
Because now everything made sense.
The accusation against Jordan.
The message.
The fear.
The confusion.
Daniel had designed every piece.
But there was still one question.
Why?
Why our family?
Why Jordan?
Then Maya said something else.
Something that changed everything.
“He wasn’t just talking to Ethan.””
“Who else?””
Maya looked terrified.
“He was talking to someone from our family.””
My blood ran cold.
“What?””
“I don’t know who.””
“You saw them?””
“No.””
“Then how do you know?””
“Because Daniel said…”
She stopped.
“Maya.””
Her voice shook.
“He said, ‘Your sister already gave me what I needed.’”
Everyone looked confused.
“Your sister?””
Maya nodded.
“I thought he meant me.””
A terrible feeling entered my chest.
But Maya continued.
“Then he said something else.””
“What?””
She whispered:
“‘The youngest one is the easiest to guide.’”
My heart stopped.
Lily.
Everyone looked toward the stairs.
Because suddenly, all the fear returned.
Not because Lily was guilty.
Because someone had been using her.
Manipulating her.
A twelve-year-old girl.
The person who had tried to save her family.
Daniel had seen her innocence.
And turned it into a weapon.
I walked upstairs.
Slowly.
I found Lily sitting on her bed.
She looked at me.
“I know.””
I froze.
“What?””
She looked down.
“I know why you’re here.””
I sat beside her.
“Lily.””
“I didn’t mean to help him.””
The words broke my heart.
“What happened?””
She cried.
“I just wanted everyone to stop fighting.””
And then she told me something that changed everything.
Something she had kept hidden.
Something that explained the message from Jordan’s phone.
She whispered:
“Daniel was the one who gave me the idea.””
My blood ran cold.
“What idea?””
Lily looked at me.
“To prove Jordan was innocent.””
I stared.
“Tell me exactly what happened.””
She wiped her tears.
“Daniel told me if I loved my family, I had to find the truth.””
My hands tightened.
“And?””
“He told me where to look.””
“Where?””
She whispered:
“Jordan’s phone.””
I felt sick.
Because Daniel had not just manipulated adults.
He had recruited a child.
And as Lily continued explaining, I realized something worse.
Daniel hadn’t been trying to destroy our family from the outside.
He had been planting himself inside it.
Using love.
Using trust.
May you like
Using the one thing he knew we could never ignore.
Our children.
