Chapter 8: The Person Behind The Plan
The next morning, I made a decision.
I was done reacting.
For weeks, our family had been pushed from one crisis to another.
Every time we thought we understood what happened, another piece appeared.
Another secret.
Another accusation.
Another person with something to hide.
I needed answers.
I started with the party.
Not with Ethan.
With everyone else.
Sometimes the truth is not hidden by the person causing the damage.
Sometimes it is hidden by the people watching.
I asked Maya to tell me every name she remembered.
She sat at the kitchen table with a notebook.
At first, she hesitated.
Then she started writing.
“Jenna.””
“Ethan.””
“Lucas.””
“Brandon.””
“Olivia.””
She stopped.
“What?””
She looked uncomfortable.
“There was someone else.””
“Who?””
She shook her head.
“I don’t know his name.””
“What did he look like?””
“Older.””
“How old?””
“Maybe eighteen or nineteen.””
“Was he a student?””
“I think so.””
“What makes you think that?””
“Because Ethan treated him differently.””
That caught my attention.
“How?””
“Ethan acted like he wanted his approval.””
Interesting.
“Did Jordan know about him?””
Maya nodded.
“He saw him.””
“When?””
“At the party.””
I looked at her.
“Why didn’t you tell us?””
“Because I didn’t think it mattered.””
She looked down.
“I was wrong.””
I called Jordan downstairs.
When he came in, I asked him about the person.
His expression immediately changed.
“You saw him?””
“Yes.””
“Who was he?””
Jordan sat down.
“I don’t know.””
“But you remember him?””
“Yes.””
He rubbed his forehead.
“He was standing with Ethan.””
“What did he look like?””
“Tall. Dark hair. Expensive clothes.””
“Anything else?””
Jordan thought.
“Ethan called him ‘Ryan.’”
The name meant nothing to me.
But Maya reacted.
“Ryan?””
We all looked at her.
“You know him?””
She shook her head quickly.
“No.””
Too quickly.
“Maya.””
She looked nervous.
“I’ve heard that name.””
“Where?””
She didn’t answer.
Jordan leaned forward.
“Maya.””
She closed her eyes.
“Ethan mentioned him before.””
“When?””
“After the video spread.””
“What did he say?””
She whispered:
“He said Ryan would handle anyone who caused problems.””
The room went silent.
There it was.
The missing piece.
Not a random person.
A person with power.
Someone Ethan trusted.
Someone who could influence him.
I searched online.
There were several students named Ryan at Westbrook.
But only one matched.
Ryan Carter.
A senior.
Captain of the debate team.
Scholarship student.
Perfect grades.
A reputation for being polite.
The kind of person nobody suspected.
I stared at his profile.
“This guy?””
Jordan nodded.
“That’s him.””
My first reaction was disbelief.
Because villains rarely look like villains.
They look normal.
They smile.
They shake hands.
They get praised by teachers.
They become the people everyone trusts.
I called Officer Hill.
He listened carefully.
“Ryan Carter?””
“Yes.””
“That’s interesting.””
“Why?””
A pause.
“We’ve heard that name before.””
My grip tightened.
“From who?””
“We can’t discuss another investigation.””
“Officer.””
He sighed.
“Mr. Bennett, just be careful.””
That was not the answer I wanted.
But it was the answer I needed.
That evening, someone slipped an envelope through our front door.
No name.
No address.
Just a plain white envelope.
Claire found it first.
“Arthur.””
I walked over.
My heart already knew.
Inside was a single piece of paper.
Four words.
STOP DIGGING.
Nothing else.
No signature.
No explanation.
Just a threat.
Jordan looked at it.
“They know.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“They know we’re looking.””
The fear in his voice was different now.
Not fear for himself.
Fear for all of us.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
And my entire body went cold.
It was a photo.
A photo of Maya.
Taken from outside our house.
She was standing in the backyard.
Yesterday.
The message underneath said:
“Next time, it won’t be a warning.””
I immediately called the police.
But before they arrived, something happened that changed everything.
Jordan looked at the photo again.
Then he whispered:
“Dad.””
“What?””
He pointed at the corner of the image.
“There.””
I zoomed in.
Behind Maya.
Near the fence.
A reflection in the glass door.
Someone standing there.
Watching.
And Jordan recognized the person.
“It’s not Ethan.””
My heart stopped.
“Who is it?””
Jordan stared at the screen.
May you like
Then said the name that none of us wanted to hear.
“Ryan.””
