Chapter 26: The Man Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

Nobody spoke after the call.

Because the impossible has a sound.

It sounds like silence.

Robert Collins was dead.

Or at least, that was what everyone believed.

A man who disappeared years ago.

A man connected to the original scandal.

A man whose name kept appearing in every secret.

Now he had called me.

Alive.

“Can we trace it?”” I asked.

Officer Hill immediately took the phone.

“We’re trying.””

The next few minutes felt endless.

Everyone waited.

Nobody moved.

Then Hill looked up.

“We have a location.””

“Where?””

He hesitated.

“An old property outside town.””

“Whose?””

He looked at Claire.

“Your father’s.””

My stomach tightened.

The old Bennett property.

The place where all of this began.

We went there with police.

This time, I didn’t act alone.

I didn’t chase answers blindly.

I didn’t let anger guide me.

I had learned.

The truth is dangerous.

But ignorance is worse.

The house had been abandoned for years.

The paint was damaged.

The windows were broken.

But inside, everything felt preserved.

Like someone had been waiting.

In the basement, we found him.

Robert Collins.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

Claire stood frozen.

“I don’t understand.””

Robert looked at her.

“I know.””

“Everyone thought you died.””

“I wanted them to.””

The anger in her voice was clear.

“You let people believe that?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Robert looked at me.

“Because some truths are worth disappearing for.””

I didn’t like the sound of that.

“Explain.””

He sat down.

“I discovered your father-in-law was innocent.””

Claire looked away.

“I know.””

Robert nodded.

“You know part of it.””

“What does that mean?””

“It means the accusation wasn’t the only crime.””

Nobody spoke.

“What else happened?””

Robert looked at me.

“Your father-in-law was being threatened.””

“By who?””

“People who wanted control of the company.””

“Who?””

Robert sighed.

“The people who eventually took over.””

I frowned.

“Who?””

He looked at Claire.

“Your family’s closest partners.””

The same pattern.

Trust.

Betrayal.

Power.

“Why involve Daniel?””

Robert’s expression changed.

“Because Daniel was angry.””

“And useful.””

“Yes.””

“Who found him?””

Robert looked down.

“Me.””

Everyone froze.

“You?””

“I told him the truth.””

“Which truth?””

“That his father was innocent.””

I understood.

He gave Daniel the wound.

Someone else turned it into a weapon.

“Who controlled Daniel?””

Robert looked at me.

“You still don’t know.””

“Tell me.””

Robert hesitated.

Then:

“Someone who benefited from everyone fighting.””

The answer was vague.

Too vague.

“Name.””

Robert looked toward the door.

Then said:

“Evelyn Bennett.””

The room stopped.

Claire stepped back.

“No.””

My heart dropped.

“Who is Evelyn Bennett?””

Claire looked at me.

“My aunt.””

The name meant nothing.

Until now.

“My father’s sister.””

Robert nodded.

“She wanted control of the company.””

“Did she cause everything?””

“She started the chain.””

Not the videos.

Not the threats.

The chain.

The original betrayal.

The first push.

“Where is she now?””

Robert looked at me.

“She’s been closer than you think.””

A terrible feeling entered my chest.

“Where?””

Robert didn’t answer.

Because we already knew.

Someone who had been around.

Someone who had access.

Someone who knew our family.

Then my phone received a message.

A picture.

Of our house.

Taken moments ago.

Under it:

“You found the beginning.””

Another message appeared.

“But you still haven’t found me.””

We looked toward the road.

Because whoever sent it was nearby.

Watching.

Waiting.

May you like

Then Robert whispered:

“She’s here.””
