Chapter 25: The Person Who Started The Future

The message stayed on my phone for hours.

“You found the past.””

“Now find the person who started the future.””

A normal person would have focused on the first part.

The past.

The secrets.

The buried mistakes.

But something about the second sentence bothered me.

Started the future.

Not continued.

Not controlled.

Started.

That meant someone had been thinking beyond revenge.

Beyond Daniel.

Beyond the old family conflict.

Someone had been planning what came after.

“What does it mean?”” Claire asked.

We were sitting in the living room.

The same room where everything had started.

The same room where Maya cried.

The same room where I almost destroyed my own family because I believed the wrong story.

I looked around.

So much had happened here.

But now, for the first time in weeks, everyone was sitting together.

Not divided.

Not suspicious.

Together.

“I think Daniel wasn’t the beginning,” I said.

Jordan nodded.

“He was a piece.””

Maya looked at the phone.

“Then who started it?””

That was the question.

The one nobody could answer.

Officer Hill was no longer leading the investigation.

He was cooperating.

And maybe that was the strangest part.

Watching someone who had once hidden the truth now trying to reveal it.

People are complicated.

They are not always heroes or villains.

Sometimes they are just people who made choices.

Bad ones.

Good ones.

Sometimes both.

The next morning, investigators searched through Daniel’s remaining files.

They found something hidden.

A folder labeled:

“Future Plan.””

The title alone made my stomach tighten.

Inside were documents.

Not written by Daniel.

Not written by Hill.

Someone else.

The handwriting was unfamiliar.

But the content was terrifying.

It wasn’t about destroying our family.

It was about replacing the people in power at Westbrook.

The school.

The community.

The organizations connected to it.

Daniel had been a tool.

A useful one.

But only a tool.

“He was never in control,” Jordan said.

I looked at him.

“What makes you say that?””

He pointed to the documents.

“Look.””

I read the page.

There were instructions.

Timelines.

Predictions.

Everything Daniel did was accounted for.

Even his mistakes.

Even his emotional reactions.

Someone had predicted him.

That meant someone understood him better than he understood himself.

“Who could do that?”” Claire whispered.

Nobody answered.

Then Olivia walked into the room.

She had been staying with relatives while everything was investigated.

She looked nervous.

But determined.

“I think I know.””

Everyone turned.

“Know what?””

“Who wrote it.””

The room went quiet.

Olivia looked at the documents.

“I’ve seen that handwriting before.””

“Where?””

She hesitated.

“At Daniel’s house.””

Officer Hill immediately focused.

“When?””

“Before everything happened.””

“What were you doing there?””

Olivia looked ashamed.

“I was trying to find evidence.””

Nobody judged her.

Not anymore.

Everyone in this story had made choices while afraid.

“What did you see?””

“A notebook.””

“What kind?””

“Like a journal.””

“Whose?””

Olivia looked at me.

“Daniel’s.””

“Was this handwriting in it?””

She nodded.

“No.””

My heart sank.

“Then whose?””

She whispered:

“Ethan’s.””

Everyone froze.

“Ethan?””

Olivia nodded.

“I thought it was strange because Daniel treated Ethan like a student.””

“And?””

“But the notes didn’t sound like a student.””

Jordan frowned.

“What did they sound like?””

“Like someone giving orders.””

The room became silent.

Because that changed everything.

Ethan wasn’t just following Daniel.

Maybe Daniel wasn’t even controlling Ethan.

Maybe Ethan had another connection.

I looked at Jordan.

“What do you know about Ethan?””

He thought.

“Not much.””

“Anything unusual?””

A long pause.

Then:

“His father.””

“What about him?””

“His father worked with Daniel’s father.””

Everyone became still.

Again.

The past.

Always the past.

“Who was his father?”” I asked.

Jordan looked at the file.

Then at Olivia.

“Robert Collins.””

The name meant nothing to me.

But Claire reacted.

Her face changed.

“Claire?””

She looked terrified.

“I know that name.””

“From where?””

She slowly stood.

“Because Robert Collins was the person who exposed my father.””

The room froze.

“What?””

She nodded.

“My father accused Daniel’s father of stealing.””

“But?””

“But Robert Collins was the one who investigated the company.””

The connections were endless.

Too many people.

Too many secrets.

“What happened to him?””

Claire looked down.

“He disappeared.””

“When?””

“Years ago.””

The pieces started forming.

Daniel’s father.

Claire’s father.

Robert Collins.

Michael.

Hill.

All connected.

All part of the same buried event.

But why now?

Why our children?

Then Olivia remembered something.

“One more thing.””

“What?””

“When I found Daniel’s notebook…”

She swallowed.

“There was a name written on the first page.””

“Whose?””

She looked at me.

“Arthur Bennett.””

My heart stopped.

“Why?””

“I don’t know.””

She looked scared.

“But under your name, there were two words.””

“What words?””

Olivia whispered:

“Final choice.””

Nobody spoke.

Because suddenly, I understood.

This was never only about revenge.

Someone had been testing me.

Testing my family.

Testing whether I would choose truth or comfort.

Whether I would protect the image of my family…

or expose the truth that could destroy it.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A familiar voice spoke.

A voice I never expected.

“Arthur.””

I froze.

Because I knew that voice.

I had heard it my entire life.

“Dad?””

The voice laughed softly.

“No.””

My blood turned cold.

Not my father.

Impossible.

Then the person spoke again.

“Not your father.””

A pause.

“But someone who knew him.””

The call ended.

May you like

And the screen showed one name.

Robert Collins.
