Chapter 8: The Files That Exposed Everyone

I spent the next several hours doing something I should have done years ago.

I investigated.

Not as a wife.

Not as someone hoping to protect a relationship.

But as Dr. Clara Whitmore.

The woman I had buried.

The woman who knew how to find answers.

I returned home before sunrise.

The house felt unfamiliar.

That was the strangest part.

Nothing had changed.

The same furniture.

The same pictures.

The same walls.

But suddenly everything looked fake.

Like a stage set built around a lie.

I walked into my office.

A room Julian rarely entered.

He always said it was because he respected my privacy.

Now I wondered if it was because he was afraid of what I might find.

I opened my old files.

My research.

My notes.

My original documents.

Then I compared them with the information from Julian's phone.

Within an hour, I found the connection.

The Hale Foundation had launched a medical technology project four years ago.

A project suspiciously similar to my unfinished research.

The timing was impossible.

Too perfect.

I printed everything.

Then my phone rang.

It was my former colleague, Dr. Ethan Brooks.

I hadn't spoken to him in years.

"Clara?""

His voice sounded surprised.

"Is everything okay?""

"No.""

I hesitated.

"I need information.""

A pause.

Then his tone changed.

"What happened?""

"Do you remember my research from six years ago?""

Another pause.

A longer one.

"Clara...""

"What?""

"I thought you knew.""

My stomach tightened.

"Knew what?""

Ethan sighed.

"The reason I stopped contacting you.""

I sat down.

"What are you talking about?""

"After you left the research field, your work suddenly appeared in another company's proposal.""

My fingers tightened around the phone.

"Whose company?""

"You know the name.""

I already did.

"The Hale Foundation.""

The room became silent.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"I tried.""

My breath stopped.

"What?""

"I emailed you. I called you.""

"No.""

"You never responded.""

I searched my memories.

Nothing.

No calls.

No emails.

Nothing.

Then I remembered.

Julian had always handled my professional emails.

He said he was helping organize them.

My blood turned cold.

"Ethan...""

"Yes?""

"Who had access to my accounts?""

A terrible silence followed.

Then he answered.

"Julian.""

I closed my eyes.

Another piece fell into place.

Not an accident.

Not a misunderstanding.

A pattern.

Julian didn't just betray me.

He controlled the information I received.

He controlled what I knew.

He controlled my entire reality.

My phone rang again.

This time, it was Teresa.

I almost didn't answer.

But I did.

"Clara.""

Her voice sounded different.

Less arrogant.

More desperate.

"What do you want?""

"I need to talk to you.""

"About what?""

A long pause.

"About Julian.""

I almost laughed.

"Now?""

"Please.""

I sat silently.

Then I said:

"Come over.""

An hour later, Teresa arrived.

But she wasn't the same woman who insulted me in the hospital.

She looked tired.

Broken.

She sat across from me.

"Clara, I owe you the truth.""

I said nothing.

"Julian's father and I made mistakes.""

"That's an understatement.""

She looked down.

"We pressured him.""

"To marry me?""

She nodded.

"Yes.""

The confirmation still hurt.

But I wasn't surprised.

"We knew Serena's family had problems.""

"What kind?""

"Financial problems. Legal problems.""

"So you separated them.""

Teresa looked ashamed.

"We thought we were protecting Julian.""

"No.""

I shook my head.

"You were controlling him.""

She didn't argue.

"And then he met me.""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"You were different.""

"Because I was useful.""

"No.""

She looked at me.

"Because you made him better.""

That almost made me angry.

Almost.

Because it sounded like an excuse.

"Then why did he do this?""

Teresa whispered:

"Because he was afraid.""

"Of what?""

"Of losing everything.""

I stood.

"Everyone keeps saying that.""

I looked at her.

"But nobody asks what he made me lose.""

She cried quietly.

For the first time, I didn't feel satisfaction.

Only exhaustion.

Then she said something that changed everything.

"Clara...""

I turned.

"There is something else you need to know.""

"What?""

"Julian's collapse wasn't an accident.""

The room went silent.

"What did you say?""

Teresa looked terrified.

"I don't know all the details.""

"Then what do you know?""

She hesitated.

May you like

Then whispered:

"Someone wanted him silenced.""
