Chapter 2: The Secret I Buried for My Marriage
The silence after my confession felt heavier than any scream.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The emergency room continued around us.
Doctors rushed by.
Machines beeped.
Families cried.
But inside that small corner of the hospital...
Everything stopped.
Teresa was the first person to recover.
She stared at me.
"Doctor?""
Her voice sounded confused.
Almost offended.
"You expect us to believe that?""
I looked at her.
After all these years, I finally saw the truth.
They never saw me as a person.
They saw me as a role.
Julian's wife.
The woman who cooked dinner.
The woman who attended family events.
The woman who smiled politely when they criticized her.
They never wondered what dreams I had abandoned.
They never asked why I stopped wearing my white coat.
They never cared.
"I don't expect anything from you anymore," I said.
Arthur frowned.
"Clara, this isn't about family issues.""
"No.""
I looked at him.
"This is about Julian's life.""
The doctor who had been reviewing the chart stepped forward.
"Are you saying you have medical training?""
"I am a licensed physician.""
The doctor's expression changed.
"Specialty?""
I paused.
Because saying it out loud after hiding it for years felt strange.
"Internal medicine.""
The doctor immediately asked questions.
Not because he respected me.
Not because he suddenly cared about my feelings.
Because he recognized knowledge.
And knowledge doesn't need permission.
"What concerns do you have about the surgery?""
I pointed at the report.
"His electrolyte imbalance is severe. If the surgical team operates before stabilizing him, the anesthesia and procedure could create additional risks.""
The doctor looked back at the numbers.
A few seconds passed.
Then he nodded slowly.
"That is a valid concern.""
Teresa's face turned pale.
"But the surgeon already recommended it.""
"I know," I said.
"Which is why we need more information before making a decision.""
Serena suddenly stepped forward.
"Clara, maybe you should stop interfering.""
Everyone looked at her.
She continued.
"Julian collapsed in my apartment. I was the one who called emergency services. I saved his life.""
Her words sounded carefully chosen.
Almost rehearsed.
I studied her face.
"Did you?""
She froze.
"What?""
I walked closer.
"When did Julian become unconscious?""
"About 2:40.""
"Before or after he drank something?""
Her eyes flickered.
Only for a second.
But I noticed.
"Why are you asking that?""
"Because his bloodwork suggests something affected his body before he collapsed.""
The atmosphere changed.
Arthur looked between us.
"What are you implying?""
"I'm not implying anything.""
I looked at Julian through the glass doors.
"I'm finding the truth.""
For years, I had avoided confrontation.
I believed marriage meant patience.
Forgiveness.
Understanding.
I believed if I loved Julian enough, everything else would eventually become clear.
But love without honesty becomes a prison.
And I had been living inside one.
Six months earlier, Julian started changing.
He came home later.
He protected his phone.
He stopped talking about his work.
Whenever I asked, he told me I was imagining things.
Maybe I was.
Maybe I wasn't.
But tonight, I was done ignoring my instincts.
The surgeon came out.
"We need a decision.""
Everyone turned.
"The patient's condition is unstable.""
Teresa immediately pointed at me.
"She is refusing.""
The surgeon looked at me.
"Are you the patient's wife?""
"Yes.""
"And you disagree with surgery?""
"I disagree with proceeding without correcting the immediate abnormalities.""
The surgeon looked surprised.
Then he checked the chart again.
"Who ordered these tests?""
"The emergency team.""
"And your recommendation?""
"Stabilize first. Reevaluate.""
A tense moment passed.
Finally, the surgeon nodded.
"We will repeat the labs and consult cardiology.""
Teresa looked furious.
"You are stopping them from saving your own husband?""
I turned toward her.
"No.""
My voice became colder.
"I am making sure they save him correctly.""
Nobody answered.
Because deep down...
They knew.
A person who doesn't care would have signed anything.
A person who wanted revenge would have walked away.
But I stayed.
I stayed because despite everything...
May you like
Julian was still the man I promised to protect.
Even if he had forgotten how to protect me.
