Chapter 7: The Betrayal I Never Saw Coming

For a moment, I couldn't understand the words.

Not because they were complicated.

Because my mind refused to accept them.

"I gave it to them.""

Julian's voice was weak, but the meaning was painfully clear.

I stared at the man lying in the hospital bed.

The man whose hand I had held through every difficult moment.

The man whose dreams I had supported.

The man I had defended when everyone else questioned him.

And now he was telling me...

He was the reason my greatest work had disappeared.

"What did you say?""

My voice barely sounded like mine.

Julian looked away.

That hurt more than anything.

A person who is innocent looks at you.

A person who regrets looks at you.

But someone who is hiding something?

They look away.

"Clara...""

"No.""

I stepped back.

"Don't say my name like that.""

His eyes filled with guilt.

"I was going to explain.""

"When?""

I laughed softly.

"When I stopped asking questions?""

He closed his eyes.

The monitor beside him continued beeping steadily.

But inside me, everything was falling apart.

The room suddenly felt too small.

Too quiet.

Too full of memories.

I remembered the nights I stayed awake helping him prepare business plans.

I remembered the papers I reviewed.

The ideas I shared.

The research I developed.

The years of work that I never published because Julian convinced me we should protect it until the right opportunity came.

"You told me it was safe.""

My voice shook.

"You told me you were protecting my work.""

"I thought I was.""

The answer made me furious.

"You thought?""

I leaned closer.

"Do you understand what you did?""

Julian swallowed.

"I made a mistake.""

"A mistake?""

The words escaped before I could stop them.

"You forgot an anniversary. That is a mistake.""

"You lost money on an investment. That is a mistake.""

"You gave someone my confidential research without permission.""

I stared at him.

"That is betrayal.""

He looked like he wanted to argue.

But he couldn't.

Because there was nothing to say.

The truth was sitting between us.

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

"Who did you give it to?""

Silence.

I already knew the answer.

But I needed him to say it.

"Serena.""

My heart sank.

Even though I expected it.

Hearing it still hurt.

"Why?""

Julian's eyes became wet.

"Because I needed help.""

I almost laughed.

"Help?""

He nodded.

"Six years ago, my company was failing.""

I said nothing.

"Your research was revolutionary. The medical technology you developed could have changed everything.""

"It wasn't yours.""

"I know.""

His voice cracked.

"I know that now.""

I looked at him coldly.

"No, Julian.""

"You knew then too.""

The silence confirmed it.

He knew.

He always knew.

"You used me.""

His face twisted.

"No.""

"Yes.""

I stepped away.

"You didn't love the person I was. You loved what I could give you.""

"That's not true.""

"Then explain it.""

He had no answer.

Because sometimes the truth is not hidden in words.

It's hidden in the moments when there are no words left.

The ICU door opened.

Serena walked in.

I turned immediately.

"What are you doing here?""

Julian looked at her.

And the fear in his eyes told me everything.

Serena wasn't just part of the past.

She was part of the present.

"I wanted to see if he was awake.""

I looked at Julian.

"You called her?""

"No.""

Too quick.

Again.

I noticed everything now.

Every hesitation.

Every movement.

Every lie.

Serena sighed.

"Clara, you don't understand the situation.""

"You're right.""

I nodded.

"I don't understand how two people I trusted could destroy everything I built.""

Serena's expression changed.

For a brief second...

I saw guilt.

Real guilt.

But it disappeared quickly.

"Julian didn't want to hurt you.""

"That doesn't make it better.""

"He was desperate.""

"So he chose himself.""

Nobody answered.

Because that was exactly what happened.

Julian had chosen himself.

His career.

His success.

His reputation.

And he expected me to forgive him because he was sorry afterward.

But apologies don't erase damage.

They only admit it happened.

I looked at Serena.

"What did you do with my research?""

Her face became serious.

"Clara...""

"Answer me.""

She glanced at Julian.

Then back at me.

"It was used in a private development project.""

My hands became cold.

"Whose project?""

Neither answered.

I didn't need them to.

The name was already forming in my mind.

"The Hale Foundation.""

Serena froze.

I knew.

I knew because I had seen the documents.

My research.

My theories.

My formulas.

All connected to her family.

"You stole my future.""

Julian whispered:

"Clara, please.""

I turned toward him.

"No.""

My voice was calm now.

Strangely calm.

"Something changed tonight.""

He looked confused.

"I came here thinking I might lose my husband.""

I looked at him.

"But I already lost him years ago.""

The words hurt him.

Good.

Not because I wanted revenge.

Because I needed him to finally understand.

I walked out of the ICU.

May you like

And for the first time in eight years...

I stopped fighting for a marriage that only one person was trying to save.
