Chapter 13: The Woman They Tried to Destroy
The moment Detective Mason ended the call, I stayed completely still.
The room felt silent.
Too silent.
A few hours ago, I thought my biggest problem was a broken marriage.
Then I discovered my husband had stolen my research.
Then I learned his former fiancée was connected to the people who destroyed my career.
Then I found out someone had tried to kill him.
But now...
Someone was building a case against me.
Not against Julian.
Not against Serena.
Me.
I looked at the documents spread across the table.
The fake prescription.
The stolen research.
The financial records.
Everything suddenly made sense.
Someone wasn't trying to hide a crime.
Someone was creating a story.
A story where I became the villain.
The brilliant doctor who secretly wanted revenge.
The wife who poisoned her husband after discovering his affair.
The woman with access to medical knowledge.
The perfect suspect.
My hands tightened.
"Victor.""
Serena looked at me.
"You understand now.""
I looked at her.
"You knew.""
Her expression changed.
"I suspected.""
"That isn't the same thing.""
"No.""
She lowered her eyes.
"But I knew someone would eventually come after you.""
I laughed quietly.
"How comforting.""
She didn't respond.
Because there was nothing she could say.
The truth was simple.
Everyone had known pieces of this.
Everyone except me.
I picked up the fake prescription.
"My name.""
My voice was low.
"My license.""
"My reputation.""
"They planned to destroy everything.""
Serena nodded.
"Victor doesn't just remove obstacles.""
"What does he do?""
"He ruins them first.""
A cold feeling moved through me.
"How many people?""
She looked away.
"Enough.""
That single word told me everything.
I grabbed my phone.
"I need to talk to Julian.""
Serena stood.
"Are you sure?""
I turned.
"Why wouldn't I be?""
"Because the truth may hurt.""
I almost smiled.
"Serena, I have spent the last two days discovering that my entire marriage was built on lies.""
I walked toward the door.
"I can handle the truth.""
When I returned to the hospital, Julian was awake.
But he looked different.
Like he had been waiting for judgment.
Not a conversation.
The second he saw me, he knew something had happened.
"What did you find?""
I placed the documents on the table.
His face changed.
"What is this?""
"Someone created a fake prescription under my name.""
His expression turned pale.
"No.""
"Yes.""
He picked up the papers.
His hands started shaking.
"Clara...""
"Did you know?""
His head immediately lifted.
"No.""
I studied him.
This time, I wasn't looking for a lie.
I was looking for the truth.
"I need you to think carefully.""
"I swear I didn't.""
"Did Victor ever mention using my name?""
Julian's silence lasted only a second.
But I saw it.
A memory.
A fear.
"What?""
I stepped closer.
"You remembered something.""
He swallowed.
"Six months ago...""
I waited.
"Victor asked about your medical license.""
My heart sank.
"Why?""
"He said it was just a question.""
"And you believed him?""
Julian looked ashamed.
"I didn't think...""
"No.""
I interrupted.
"You didn't think.""
The words hurt him.
But they were true.
"You spent years making decisions without thinking about who would suffer.""
He looked down.
"I know.""
"Then tell me everything.""
Julian took a deep breath.
"Victor knew about your research before I did.""
I froze.
"What?""
"He had been watching your work for years.""
"Why?""
"Because he believed you were one of the few people who could create something valuable.""
My stomach turned.
"I wasn't a person to him.""
"No.""
Julian looked at me.
"You were an asset.""
The word hurt.
Because it was exactly how I felt.
Used.
Valued only when I had something to offer.
"What happened after he found out we were married?""
Julian closed his eyes.
"He was angry.""
"Why?""
"Because he thought I had access to your research.""
I stared at him.
"You did.""
His face collapsed.
"I know.""
Silence.
Then he continued.
"I started working with Serena because she wanted to protect herself from her father.""
I frowned.
"She wanted to escape?""
"Yes.""
"Then why did she help him?""
"Because she was trapped.""
I looked away.
Everyone had an excuse.
Everyone had a reason.
Everyone had a story.
But I was the one who lost everything.
A knock interrupted us.
Detective Mason entered.
"Mrs. Whitmore.""
I turned.
"Yes?""
"We need you to come with us.""
Julian immediately sat up.
"Why?""
The detective looked uncomfortable.
"We received an official complaint.""
My heart sank.
"From who?""
A pause.
Then:
"The Hale Foundation.""
Of course.
The trap was closing.
"What are the charges?""
The detective hesitated.
"Unauthorized possession of confidential medical data.""
I almost laughed.
They were accusing me of stealing my own work.
I looked at Julian.
Then at the detective.
"I'll go.""
"Clara.""
Julian's voice broke.
I turned.
For a moment, I saw the man I married.
The man who loved me.
The man who made terrible choices.
"I'm sorry.""
I held his gaze.
"I know.""
And that was the hardest part.
Because forgiveness and trust were not the same.
I walked out of the hospital.
Not as a suspect.
Not as a victim.
But as someone who finally understood.
They wanted to destroy me because they were afraid of what I would uncover.
May you like
And they had made one mistake.
They underestimated me.
