Calm

Chapter 11: The Evidence That Could Destroy Them All

The darkness surrounded me.

Every instinct I had developed as a doctor told me to stay calm.

But this wasn't a medical emergency.

This was something else.

Something more dangerous.

I reached for my phone.

No signal.

Of course.

The person who entered the house had planned this.

I heard footsteps.

Slow.

Careful.

Coming closer.

I held the flash drive tightly.

Whoever was here wanted this.

And that meant this was important.

A shadow appeared near the doorway.

"Clara.""

My entire body relaxed for half a second.

Then immediately tensed again.

Because I recognized the voice.

"Serena.""

She stepped into the room.

Not wearing her professional expression.

Not pretending to be polite.

Just cold.

"What are you doing here?""

She looked around.

"I came for what belongs to me.""

I laughed softly.

"Nothing here belongs to you.""

Her eyes moved to the flash drive.

"There it is.""

I stepped back.

"So that's what you're afraid of.""

She smiled.

"You still don't understand.""

"Then explain.""

She walked closer.

"You think this is about revenge?""

"Isn't it?""

"No.""

Her voice became quieter.

"It's about survival.""

I stared at her.

"Whose survival?""

"Mine.""

The answer was immediate.

For the first time, I saw Serena as something different.

Not just an enemy.

A person trapped by her own choices.

"What did Victor Hale do?""

Her expression changed.

"Be careful.""

"Why?""

"Because once you know everything, you can't go back.""

I looked at the flash drive.

"I already can't.""

A long silence.

Then Serena said:

"Julian never told you the whole story.""

I almost smiled.

"Neither did you.""

She ignored the comment.

"Six years ago, when your research disappeared, it wasn't because Julian sold it.""

I froze.

"What?""

"He was trying to protect it.""

"No.""

I shook my head.

"He admitted he gave it to you.""

"He gave it to me because he thought I could save it.""

Her eyes became darker.

"My father was already taking control.""

I studied her.

"Why should I believe you?""

"You shouldn't.""

That answer surprised me.

"But you should look at the evidence.""

She reached into her bag.

She pulled out a folder.

And placed it on the desk.

"What is that?""

"Proof that Victor Hale manipulated everyone.""

I didn't move.

"Why give this to me?""

"Because you're the only person who can expose him.""

I laughed.

"You're asking me for help?""

"No.""

Her face became serious.

"I'm asking you to finish what you started.""

Before I could answer, the house alarm suddenly activated.

Serena looked toward the door.

Her expression changed.

"He found us.""

"Who?""

She didn't answer.

Then I heard another voice.

A man's voice.

"Clara.""

My blood froze.

Victor Hale.

He walked into the room like he owned it.

Because maybe he thought he did.

He was older than I expected.

Silver hair.

Perfect suit.

Calm expression.

The kind of person who never needed to raise his voice because everyone else did what he wanted.

"Mrs. Whitmore.""

I stared at him.

"You broke into my house.""

He smiled.

"I came to talk.""

"People who come to talk don't usually bring backup.""

His smile disappeared slightly.

"You have something that belongs to me.""

I held the flash drive.

"This?""

"Yes.""

I looked at Serena.

Then Victor.

"Why is everyone so afraid of this?""

Victor sighed.

"Because people misunderstand information.""

"No.""

I shook my head.

"People fear consequences.""

His expression hardened.

"Your husband made mistakes.""

"So did I.""

He looked surprised.

"What?""

"I trusted him.""

I stepped forward.

"But I won't make that mistake twice.""

Victor's face became colder.

"You have no idea what you're fighting.""

"Maybe.""

I held up the drive.

"But I know who I'm fighting.""

For the first time...

Victor looked uncertain.

Then he smiled.

"You are more like your old self than I expected.""

I froze.

"My old self?""

He walked closer.

"The ambitious doctor. The researcher. The woman who thought she could change the world.""

I said nothing.

Because I understood.

He knew me.

Before Julian.

Before marriage.

Before I disappeared.

May you like

And that meant...

He had been watching me for years.
