Chapter 4: The Truth Hidden Behind the Perfect Marriage
The ICU hallway was colder than before.
Or maybe it was just me.
Maybe the temperature hadn't changed at all.
Maybe I was finally seeing everything clearly.
For years, I had convinced myself that Julian and I had a strong marriage.
Not a perfect one.
No marriage was perfect.
But a real one.
A marriage built on trust.
At least, that's what I believed.
I looked down at his phone again.
The screen showed the evidence of a life I didn't recognize.
A life my husband had carefully hidden from me.
The financial records.
The private messages.
The stolen medical documents.
Everything pointed to one thing.
Julian wasn't just hiding a relationship.
He was hiding a plan.
"Clara.""
Arthur's voice interrupted my thoughts.
I looked up.
My father-in-law stood in front of me, his expression completely different from the man who had been yelling at me earlier.
Now he looked nervous.
Almost afraid.
"Can we talk?""
I almost smiled.
It was unbelievable how quickly people's attitudes changed when they realized they might lose control.
"About what?""
Arthur glanced toward Serena.
"Not here.""
"No.""
My answer came immediately.
His eyebrows tightened.
"Clara.""
"No more private conversations.""
I held up Julian's phone.
"Not after everyone spent the last few hours accusing me while protecting secrets.""
Teresa stepped forward.
"How dare you talk to us like that?""
I turned toward her.
"How dare I?""
My voice remained calm.
"Your son collapsed in another woman's apartment at three in the morning.""
Her face changed.
"Be careful.""
"No.""
I shook my head.
"I was careful for eight years.""
The words surprised even me.
Because they were true.
I had been careful.
Careful with my words.
Careful with his feelings.
Careful not to embarrass him.
Careful not to make his family uncomfortable.
And what did that get me?
A husband who lied.
A family who blamed me.
And a stranger who knew more about my marriage than I did.
The ICU doors opened.
A nurse walked out.
"Family of Julian Whitmore?""
Everyone immediately turned.
"His condition has stabilized temporarily.""
Teresa let out a breath of relief.
"Thank God.""
The nurse continued.
"But we need more information about what happened before his collapse.""
My eyes moved toward Serena.
She looked away.
The nurse noticed.
"Was someone with him when he became unconscious?""
Serena hesitated.
"I was.""
"What did he consume before that?""
"Nothing unusual.""
Too fast.
The answer came too quickly.
I watched her carefully.
The nurse wrote something down.
"Mr. Whitmore's blood results suggest exposure to something that may have affected his electrolytes and heart rhythm.""
Arthur stiffened.
"What are you saying?""
"We're saying we need to know everything.""
The nurse looked at Serena.
"Every detail matters.""
Serena nodded.
But her confidence was gone.
After the nurse left, I turned to her.
"What happened in that apartment?""
She crossed her arms.
"I already told everyone.""
"No.""
I stepped closer.
"You told everyone the version that benefits you.""
Her eyes narrowed.
"You think I did something to him?""
"I think you know more than you're saying.""
She laughed quietly.
"You always thought you were better than everyone, didn't you?""
The accusation surprised me.
"Excuse me?""
"You walk around pretending you're so intelligent because you have a medical degree.""
Her voice became sharper.
"But you don't know anything about Julian.""
That sentence hit differently.
Because maybe she was right.
Maybe I didn't.
Maybe I knew the husband I wanted him to be.
Not the man he had become.
"You were never supposed to come back into his life.""
I froze.
"What?""
Serena immediately realized she had said too much.
But it was too late.
"What do you mean?""
She looked away.
"I didn't say anything.""
"Yes, you did.""
I stepped closer.
"You said I came back.""
Silence.
Arthur and Teresa exchanged a glance.
A glance that told me they knew something.
Something they had hidden.
I looked at them.
"How long have you known?""
Neither answered.
My chest tightened.
"Known what?""
Arthur finally spoke.
"Clara, there are things you don't understand.""
A bitter laugh escaped me.
"That has been everyone's favorite sentence.""
Things you don't understand.
You wouldn't understand.
It's complicated.
Don't worry about it.
For years, those words had been used to keep me outside the truth.
But not anymore.
"What happened before I married Julian?""
Teresa looked uncomfortable.
"Nothing.""
"Then why does Serena think I came back?""
Nobody answered.
And that silence was the answer.
I felt something break inside me.
Not my heart.
Something else.
Something stronger.
The last piece of trust I had been holding onto.
I looked at Julian through the ICU window.
The man lying there was someone I loved.
But he was also someone I needed to uncover.
Because whatever happened tonight...
May you like
It started long before the ambulance arrived.
And I was going to find out why.
