Chapter 5: The Man Who Wanted Grandpa’s Legacy
I couldn't stop thinking about Victor Carter.
Not because he seemed dangerous.
Because he seemed familiar.
There was something about the way he talked.
The confidence.
The certainty.
The way he acted like every room belonged to him.
It reminded me of Marcus.
Except Victor had decades of experience.
And that made him more dangerous.
After the meeting ended, Robert asked everyone to leave.
I stayed behind.
"Who is he?""
Robert closed the door.
"Someone your grandfather trusted.""
I waited.
"And then?""
Robert looked out the window.
"Then he betrayed him.""
I didn't expect that.
"What happened?""
Robert sat down.
"Twenty years ago, your grandfather and Victor started this company together.""
"So he was a co-founder?""
"Yes.""
"What changed?""
"Victor changed.""
I frowned.
"That doesn't explain anything.""
Robert sighed.
"Your grandfather believed a company existed to serve people. Victor believed a company existed to create power.""
I thought about Grandma.
The way she talked about Grandpa.
The way she talked about kindness.
"I don't understand.""
"Your grandfather wanted to expand slowly. Protect employees. Keep control.""
"And Victor?""
"He wanted investors. Faster growth. More money.""
"Was that bad?""
Robert shook his head.
"Wanting success isn't bad. Forgetting people while chasing it is.""
I looked at the documents on the table.
"What happened between them?""
Robert hesitated.
That hesitation bothered me.
"What?""
"There was a disagreement.""
"About what?""
"Victor tried to secretly sell part of the company.""
My eyes widened.
"Without Grandpa knowing?""
"Yes.""
"What happened?""
"Your grandfather found out.""
"And?""
Robert looked away.
"He removed Victor.""
I leaned back.
"So why is he here?""
Robert's expression darkened.
"Because Victor believes this company should have been his.""
I looked at the papers.
"Can he take it?""
"No.""
The answer was immediate.
"But?""
Robert sighed.
"There is always a but.""
He walked to the cabinet and pulled out another file.
"This is why your grandfather left specific instructions.""
I opened it.
Inside were legal documents.
Ownership agreements.
My name appeared everywhere.
Daniel Carter.
But then I saw something else.
A clause.
"What is this?""
Robert looked serious.
"Your grandfather knew Victor might return.""
"Why?""
"Because people like Victor don't let go easily.""
I kept reading.
The document stated that before full ownership transferred to me, I had to complete certain requirements.
Learn the company.
Meet employees.
Review operations.
And one more thing.
"Investigate the past?""
Robert nodded.
"Your grandfather wanted you to understand what happened before you made decisions.""
I looked up.
"Why would he need me to investigate?""
Robert didn't answer.
That was the answer.
There was something nobody wanted to tell me.
That night, I went back to Grandma's house.
She was sitting in her favorite chair.
Reading a book.
Like nothing unusual had happened.
"You knew about Victor.""
She slowly closed the book.
"Yes.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because you needed to hear the truth from the people involved.""
"Grandma, he said there are problems.""
"There are always problems.""
"Did Grandpa trust him?""
She looked down.
"Once.""
That one word carried years of pain.
"What happened?""
Grandma was quiet.
Then she said:
"Your grandfather made one mistake.""
I sat down.
"What?""
"He believed everyone had the same heart he did.""
I looked at her.
"He didn't?""
"No.""
She looked toward the window.
"Victor was like family to us.""
The sadness in her voice surprised me.
"Then he betrayed Grandpa?""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
Grandma shook her head.
"Because some people don't want to build something.""
She looked at me.
"They only want to own it.""
I thought about my siblings.
The envelopes.
The money.
The way they reacted.
A terrible thought entered my mind.
"Grandma...""
"Yes?""
"Do Vanessa and Marcus know about Victor?""
Her expression changed.
Just slightly.
But I noticed.
That scared me.
"What?""
She looked away.
"Not yet.""
"Why?""
"Because they don't know the whole story.""
"What story?""
She was silent.
Then she whispered:
"The story of why your grandfather never trusted them with the company.""
My heart sank.
"What do you mean?""
Grandma stood up.
"Daniel, there are things about your family you are not ready to hear.""
"I deserve to know.""
"I know.""
"Then tell me.""
She looked at me.
And for the first time in my life...
Grandma looked afraid.
"Your grandfather didn't choose you because you were the only good grandchild.""
I froze.
"Then why?""
She walked toward the cabinet.
Pulled out a small box.
May you like
And placed it in front of me.
"Because you were the only one who didn't know you were being tested.""
