Chapter 15: The Family Secret That Changed Everything

The police searched for hours.

No one slept.

No one ate.

Nobody knew what to say.

Grandma was missing.

The woman who had raised us.

The woman who had protected everyone.

Gone.

And the worst part?

She had left willingly.

There were no signs of struggle.

No broken doors.

No evidence of violence.

Just her necklace.

And a note.

One sentence.

"I have to finish what I started.""

That was it.

Nothing else.

I read it again and again.

Grandma didn't run.

She didn't disappear.

She went somewhere.

For a reason.

My mother sat beside me.

"I know where she went.""

I looked at her.

"What?""

She looked terrified.

"The old house.""

I frowned.

"What old house?""

"The one your grandfather owned before the company.""

"Why would she go there?""

My mother looked away.

"Because that's where everything began.""

The house was three hours away.

An old farmhouse outside the city.

I had never been there.

Nobody had.

At least, that's what I thought.

When we arrived, the front door was unlocked.

Inside, everything was covered in dust.

But someone had been there recently.

Grandma.

I knew immediately.

The kitchen table had fresh tea.

Two cups.

One empty.

One untouched.

"She was waiting for someone.""

My mother nodded.

"Yes.""

"Who?""

Before she answered, a voice came from the hallway.

"Me.""

We turned.

Grandma stepped forward.

Alive.

Safe.

But not alone.

Standing behind her was a man I recognized from the photographs.

Older now.

But unmistakable.

My uncle Michael.

Everyone froze.

"Why are you here?""

I asked.

Grandma looked at me.

"Because it is time.""

I was exhausted.

"Time for what?""

She walked to the table.

"Time for the truth.""

I laughed quietly.

"The truth.""

The word almost felt meaningless now.

Everyone claimed to have it.

Nobody shared it.

Grandma looked hurt.

"I know I have failed you.""

I didn't answer.

She continued.

"But I need you to understand why.""

She placed a small box on the table.

Inside was a flash drive.

"Everything your grandfather recorded.""

I frowned.

"Recorded?""

"He knew someone would eventually try to rewrite history.""

My mother looked at it.

"Does it show who betrayed him?""

Grandma nodded.

"Yes.""

Everyone became still.

"Who?""

Grandma looked at me.

"Before I tell you, you need to hear your grandfather's final message.""

She connected the drive to an old laptop.

The screen flickered.

Then Grandpa appeared.

Older.

Tired.

But smiling.

My chest tightened.

Seeing him again hurt.

"Daniel.""

I froze.

He was speaking to me.

"If you are watching this, then Eleanor has made the hardest decision of her life.""

Grandma wiped tears from her eyes.

Grandpa continued.

"I know you will have questions.""

A pause.

"You will feel betrayed.""

Another pause.

"But remember this.""

His expression became serious.

"Secrets are not always created to hide evil.""

I looked down.

"Sometimes they are created to protect innocent people.""

The video continued.

"I made mistakes.""

My breath caught.

"But my greatest mistake was believing I could carry everything alone.""

He looked directly at the camera.

"I should have trusted the people I loved.""

Everyone was silent.

Then he said:

"The person who hurt this family is someone I trusted more than anyone.""

My heart started racing.

The room became completely still.

Grandpa continued:

"Someone who knew my dreams.""

A pause.

"Someone who knew my weaknesses.""

Another pause.

"And someone who knew exactly how to make everyone blame each other.""

The video froze for a second.

Then Grandpa said the words that changed everything.

"The person responsible is not Victor.""

I stopped breathing.

Not Victor.

Everyone looked shocked.

Grandpa continued:

"It is not Michael.""

My uncle looked down.

"It is not Robert.""

Robert wasn't here, but his name still hung in the air.

Then Grandpa said:

"It is someone who has been hiding in plain sight.""

The screen went black.

Nobody spoke.

Then the video resumed.

One final sentence appeared.

"If you are seeing this, Daniel, trust nobody until you know who your enemy really is.""

The screen turned off.

I looked at Grandma.

"Who?""

She didn't answer.

My mother looked terrified.

Michael looked broken.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

From an unknown number.

One sentence.

I know you found the video.

Another message arrived.

Your grandfather was right.

Then the final one.

The person you trust most is the one you should fear.

I slowly lowered my phone.

May you like

Because suddenly...

I knew exactly who the message was talking about.
