Chapter 29: The Person Who Saved Us All
The old house looked exactly the same.
Abandoned.
Silent.
Waiting.
The place where my grandfather had built his first dream.
The place where my family history began.
And apparently...
The place where the final truth was hidden.
We entered carefully.
Nobody trusted the silence.
Not anymore.
Every shadow felt like a secret.
Every closed door felt like a warning.
Grandma walked slowly through the hallway.
"I haven't been here in years.""
I looked at her.
"Why?""
She touched an old picture frame.
"Because Edward told me never to return.""
My heart tightened.
"Why?""
"Because he knew someone might follow me.""
I looked around.
"Did he hide something here?""
She nodded.
"Yes.""
We searched every room.
Nothing.
Then Emily stopped.
"Wait.""
Everyone turned.
She was standing beside the fireplace.
"There.""
Behind an old stone was a small opening.
Inside was a box.
But this time...
There was no key.
It was already open.
Someone had been here.
Grandma immediately knew.
"They found it.""
I looked inside.
Empty.
Except for one thing.
A note.
My father's handwriting.
Daniel,
If you're reading this, then they found the evidence before you.
I felt my chest tighten.
The letter continued.
But don't worry.
The evidence was never in the box.
I looked at Grandma.
"What does that mean?""
She shook her head.
The person who destroys families always looks for objects.
Documents.
Money.
Proof.
But they forget one thing.
The most important evidence is always carried by people.
I frowned.
People.
The same phrase my grandfather used.
People are the foundation.
The next line made me stop.
I trusted one person to carry the truth.
Someone who had no reason to be suspected.
Someone everyone ignored.
I looked around.
"Who?""
The answer came from behind us.
"Me.""
Everyone turned.
An old woman stood in the doorway.
I didn't recognize her.
But Grandma did.
Her face went pale.
"Clara's mother.""
The woman smiled sadly.
"No.""
She stepped forward.
"My name is Margaret.""
Nobody spoke.
"Margaret who?""
She looked at me.
"Margaret Carter.""
My breath stopped.
Another Carter.
Another secret.
"Who are you?""
She looked at Grandma.
"Your mother.""
The room froze.
I stared.
Grandma's mother.
The missing piece.
The person nobody knew existed.
"I thought you were dead.""
Grandma whispered.
Margaret smiled sadly.
"That was the idea.""
I felt like I was trapped inside a never-ending mystery.
"Explain.""
Margaret looked at me.
"Your grandfather discovered the truth before anyone else.""
"What truth?""
"That the enemy wasn't outside the family.""
She looked around.
"It was inside.""
My stomach tightened.
"Who?""
Margaret looked at Grandma.
Then at me.
"Your grandfather knew Harold was being controlled.""
"By who?""
"By someone who wanted Carter Industries.""
"Who?""
She took a deep breath.
"Edward's biological father.""
Silence.
I stared.
"What?""
"My father?""
"No.""
Margaret shook her head.
"Your grandfather's father.""
I felt overwhelmed.
"This goes back generations?""
"Yes.""
She explained.
"The Carter family built everything on trust.""
"But?""
"But someone believed trust was weakness.""
She looked at Grandma.
"The person behind everything was Eleanor's brother.""
I froze.
"My great-uncle?""
Grandma closed her eyes.
"I knew.""
Everyone turned.
"You knew?""
She nodded.
"I discovered it years ago.""
"Then why didn't you tell anyone?""
"Because he was already dead.""
The room became silent.
"What?""
Grandma continued.
"His name was Thomas Carter.""
"And he controlled Harold?""
"Yes.""
"How?""
"Through debt.""
"Manipulation.""
"Fear.""
Everything made sense.
Harold.
Victor.
The company.
The betrayals.
They were all pieces of someone else's game.
"But if Thomas is dead...""
I looked at Margaret.
"Then who sent the messages?""
Nobody answered.
Then the lights went out.
A voice came from the darkness.
"You finally figured it out.""
Everyone froze.
The voice was familiar.
Too familiar.
The lights turned back on.
A person stood near the entrance.
Someone I thought was helping us.
Someone who had been there through every discovery.
Someone who had guided us.
Robert.
But he looked different.
Cold.
Calm.
"Robert?""
Grandma whispered.
He smiled sadly.
"I'm sorry.""
My blood ran cold.
"You?""
Robert looked at the family.
"I tried to stop this.""
I stared.
"What are you talking about?""
He looked at me.
"Your grandfather knew Thomas had created the entire plan.""
"So?""
"So he needed someone to protect the truth.""
I shook my head.
"That was you.""
He nodded.
"Yes.""
"Then why?""
His expression changed.
"Because protecting the truth meant protecting the person who carried it.""
"Who?""
Robert looked at Grandma.
Then said:
"You.""
I froze.
"What?""
He looked at Grandma.
"She knows.""
Grandma looked terrified.
"Robert...""
He continued.
"The truth was never about who betrayed Edward.""
A pause.
"It was about who Edward was protecting.""
He looked at me.
"And that person was not your mother.""
My heart raced.
"Then who?""
May you like
Robert's answer broke everything.
"Your grandmother.""
