Chapter 23: The Legacy My Grandfather Left Behind
I couldn't breathe.
The photograph slipped from my fingers.
"No.""
Robert didn't react.
Because he knew.
He knew exactly what I was thinking.
"That's impossible.""
"I thought so too.""
I looked at him.
"You expect me to believe Grandpa was involved?""
"No.""
Robert shook his head.
"I expect you to ask why the photograph exists.""
I picked it up again.
Grandpa.
Standing beside Harold Whitmore.
Both of them younger.
Both smiling.
Like friends.
Like partners.
"Explain.""
Robert sat down.
"Your grandfather knew Harold before the company.""
"How?""
"They grew up together.""
I stared.
"Grandpa never mentioned him.""
"Because after everything happened, he wanted everyone to forget.""
"Why?""
Robert looked at the photograph.
"Because Harold wasn't always the enemy.""
That shocked me.
"What?""
"People change.""
Robert sighed.
"Harold and your grandfather were close once.""
"Then what happened?""
"Power.""
The simplest answer.
And maybe the most accurate.
"They built businesses together.""
Robert continued.
"But your grandfather cared about people.""
"And Harold cared about control.""
"Exactly.""
I looked at the photograph.
"So Grandpa knew what Harold was capable of.""
"Yes.""
"Then why didn't he stop him?""
Robert looked at me.
"Because he believed Harold could change.""
I almost laughed.
The same mistake everyone made.
Trusting the wrong person.
"He gave him another chance.""
"Yes.""
"And Harold betrayed him.""
"Yes.""
I looked down.
"Then why hide this?""
Robert answered quietly.
"Because your grandfather didn't want history to remember Harold as someone who was always evil.""
That sounded like Grandpa.
He always looked for the humanity in people.
Even when they didn't deserve it.
"But what does this have to do with my father's death?""
Robert became serious.
"Everything.""
He opened another file.
"Your father discovered Harold was still operating.""
"How?""
"He found financial connections.""
"To who?""
Robert looked at me.
"To people inside the company.""
Again.
Inside.
"The board members?""
"Some.""
"Victor?""
"Yes.""
"Anyone else?""
Robert hesitated.
I already knew.
"Who?""
He looked at me.
"Your grandmother.""
I felt the anger return.
"Why?""
"Because Harold convinced her.""
"Convinced her to do what?""
Robert sighed.
"To believe Edward was making things worse.""
My chest tightened.
"He turned her against my father.""
"Yes.""
"But she still loved him.""
"I know.""
Robert looked devastated.
"That's why she suffered.""
I remembered Grandma's confession.
The guilt.
The pain.
The years of silence.
She wasn't protecting a criminal.
She was protecting the memory of her son.
"Then who actually killed Dad?""
Robert looked at me.
"I don't know.""
I wanted to be angry.
But I understood.
Nobody knew everything.
Everyone only had pieces.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message.
From Emily.
I opened it.
Daniel.
I found something.
Another message followed.
Something Dad hid from everyone.
A location.
I showed Robert.
His expression changed.
"Where is that?""
I looked at the address.
"The old cemetery.""
Robert stood immediately.
"No.""
"What?""
"You can't go there.""
"Why?""
"Because that's where your grandfather buried the final evidence.""
I stared.
"Buried?""
Robert nodded.
"He didn't trust anyone anymore.""
"Not even Grandma?""
"Especially not anyone.""
The cemetery was empty.
Cold wind moved between the graves.
Emily was already there.
She stood beside an old stone.
"How did you find this?""
She pointed.
"Dad left clues.""
I looked at the grave.
Not Grandpa.
Not my father.
Someone else.
A person I didn't recognize.
"Who is this?""
Emily looked at the name.
"Samuel's mother.""
I frowned.
"Why would Dad hide evidence here?""
Emily knelt.
"Because nobody would look here.""
She removed a small stone.
Underneath was a metal container.
Inside was a journal.
My grandfather's handwriting.
I opened it.
The first page contained one sentence.
The truth is not hidden because it is weak.
It is hidden because people are not ready.
I continued.
The next pages explained everything.
Harold.
Victor.
The company.
The betrayals.
But then I reached a section that made me stop.
A name.
Laura Carter.
My father's second wife.
The journal said:
Laura discovered Harold's plan before anyone else.
She tried to expose him.
But she made one mistake.
She trusted someone.
I turned the page.
The next sentence froze me.
The person she trusted was the same person who later betrayed Edward.
I looked at Emily.
"Who?""
She shook her head.
The next page was torn.
Only one line remained.
I should have protected my son from the person he loved most.
My heart pounded.
Then I heard footsteps.
We turned.
Someone was standing behind us.
A familiar voice spoke.
"You finally found it.""
Victor.
But he wasn't alone.
Standing beside him was someone I never expected.
Someone who should have been impossible.
Someone who had disappeared years ago.
May you like
Harold Whitmore.
Alive.
