Chapter 26: The Brother Who Carried The Secret

The silence after Grandma's words was unbearable.

Michael.

My uncle.

The person who had spent the entire investigation trying to help.

The person who had looked just as shocked as everyone else.

The person who had claimed he wanted justice.

No.

I refused to believe it.

"Michael?""

Grandma nodded sadly.

"Yes.""

"No.""

I looked around.

"Where is he?""

Nobody answered.

That was becoming a pattern.

People disappeared whenever the truth got close.

Robert sat down.

"Michael was young.""

I turned toward him.

"Don't defend him.""

"I'm not.""

"Then explain.""

Robert sighed.

"Your grandfather loved all of his children.""

"Michael too.""

"Yes.""

"Then why would he betray him?""

Robert looked down.

"Because Michael was desperate.""

"For what?""

"Recognition.""

The answer was painful.

Because I understood it.

Everyone in this family wanted something.

Victor wanted power.

Harold wanted control.

Robert wanted to fix mistakes.

Michael wanted to matter.

"And Harold used that.""

Robert nodded.

"He made Michael believe he was helping the family.""

"How?""

"He told him Edward was destroying everything.""

My chest tightened.

"So Michael believed my father was the problem.""

"Yes.""

"But then he found out the truth.""

"Yes.""

"When?""

"After Edward died.""

I felt sick.

"Then why didn't he confess?""

Robert looked at Grandma.

"Because he was afraid.""

Everyone was afraid.

That was the tragedy.

Fear had created every secret.

Every lie.

Every betrayal.

"Where is Michael now?""

Emily checked her phone.

"Daniel.""

I looked at her.

"What?""

Her face had changed.

"He sent me something.""

"What?""

She showed me the screen.

A message.

I know you found out.

Another message appeared.

I am sorry.

Then:

I need to see Daniel alone.

I looked at Grandma.

"No.""

She immediately shook her head.

"You cannot go alone.""

I agreed.

But before anyone could stop me, another message arrived.

If you bring anyone, I disappear forever.

I stared.

Emily grabbed my arm.

"Daniel, don't.""

I looked at the message.

Then at my family.

Everyone wanted to protect me.

But everyone had secrets.

Maybe it was time I faced one alone.

The meeting place was an abandoned church outside town.

A strange choice.

But somehow, it felt fitting.

A place built for forgiveness.

Filled with people who needed it.

Michael stood near the altar.

Older than I remembered.

Tired.

Broken.

"You came.""

I stopped several feet away.

"You asked.""

He nodded.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then:

"I know what they told you.""

I crossed my arms.

"Is it true?""

Michael looked down.

"Some of it.""

I hated that answer.

"What does that mean?""

"It means I made mistakes.""

"Did you help Harold?""

A long pause.

Then:

"Yes.""

The word hurt.

Even though I expected it.

"Why?""

Michael sat down.

"Because I thought I was saving the family.""

"How?""

"Harold convinced me Edward was reckless.""

"He wasn't.""

"I know that now.""

The anger inside me grew.

"You knew after he died.""

Michael closed his eyes.

"Yes.""

"Did you know Victor would hurt him?""

"No.""

"Did you know Dad would die?""

"No.""

His answer sounded genuine.

And that somehow made it worse.

"Then what did you do?""

Michael looked at me.

"I gave Harold information.""

"What information?""

"Where Edward kept certain files.""

My heart sank.

"The evidence.""

"Yes.""

"You gave him access.""

"Yes.""

I stepped back.

"You helped them.""

Michael nodded.

"Yes.""

The honesty was painful.

"Then why help me now?""

He looked at me.

"Because I spent twenty years trying to undo what I did.""

I stared.

"How?""

"By protecting you.""

The words surprised me.

"What?""

"When Edward died, he left instructions.""

"For what?""

"For you.""

I froze.

"My father?""

Michael nodded.

"He knew things might go wrong.""

He reached into his pocket.

Pulled out a small envelope.

My name was written on it.

Daniel.

My hands shook.

"Why didn't you give this to me before?""

"Because I wasn't sure I deserved to.""

I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

My father's handwriting.

My heart broke immediately.

Daniel,

If you are reading this, then something happened that I hoped never would.

I stopped.

I couldn't continue.

Michael looked away.

I forced myself.

I love you.

I love your sister.

And I need you to understand something.

Not everyone who hurts you is your enemy.

Some people hurt you because they are weak.

I wiped my eyes.

The letter continued.

The person who betrayed me is not the person you think.

Your uncle made a mistake.

But he was not the person who wanted me gone.

I looked at Michael.

He was crying silently.

The next line made my blood freeze.

The person who wanted me dead...

Was the person who knew I trusted them most.

I turned the page.

But the final paragraph had been torn away.

Someone had removed the ending.

Michael whispered:

"Your father never finished the letter.""

I looked at him.

"Why?""

He stared at the missing piece.

"Because someone took it.""

"Who?""

Michael's face changed.

"I don't know.""

Then my phone buzzed.

A new message.

An image.

The missing piece of the letter.

Attached.

The sender wrote:

You are finally close.

But you still don't know who your father was protecting.

I looked at the image.

And my blood went cold.

May you like

Because the final sentence read:

Daniel, trust your mother.
