Chapter 17: The Man Who Was Never Telling the Whole Truth

Robert stood in the doorway.

For a moment, nobody moved.

The flashlight in Michael's hand shook slightly.

Not from fear.

From anger.

"You followed us.""

Robert didn't deny it.

"Yes.""

Grandma looked hurt.

"Why?""

Robert stepped inside.

"Because I knew you would eventually come here.""

I stared at him.

"How?""

He looked at me.

"Because I helped create the clues.""

That sentence shocked me.

"You knew about this?""

He nodded.

"Your grandfather asked me to help.""

"Then why didn't you tell me?""

Robert looked away.

"Because I failed him once.""

I stepped forward.

"What does that mean?""

He took a deep breath.

"I wasn't the person who betrayed your grandfather.""

Everyone became still.

"But I was the person who allowed it to happen.""

Nobody spoke.

"What did you do?""

Robert looked at the old building.

"I trusted the wrong person.""

Again.

That phrase.

Everyone in this family had been destroyed by trust.

"Clara.""

The moment he said the name, everything changed.

My mother looked shocked.

"You knew?""

Robert nodded.

"Yes.""

"Where is she?""

"I don't know.""

"You're lying.""

My mother stepped forward.

"Robert, you knew what happened.""

His face tightened.

"I knew pieces.""

"Then tell us.""

He looked at Grandma.

"I'm sorry.""

Grandma's eyes filled with disappointment.

That was the first time I saw Robert truly break.

"I should have told you years ago.""

"Yes.""

Her voice was quiet.

"You should have.""

Robert looked at me.

"Daniel, Clara was not just your grandfather's assistant.""

"Who was she?""

He hesitated.

Then:

"She was his closest advisor.""

"So?""

Robert looked down.

"She was also his daughter.""

The room went silent.

"What?""

Grandma closed her eyes.

I couldn't understand.

"Grandpa had another daughter?""

Robert nodded.

"Yes.""

My mind struggled to process it.

"Why didn't anyone know?""

"Because your grandfather didn't know.""

I froze.

"What?""

Robert continued.

"Clara was born before he married Eleanor.""

Grandma looked at the floor.

"She found him years later.""

I stared.

"So Grandpa knew eventually.""

"Yes.""

"And?""

"He welcomed her.""

That sounded like Grandpa.

"Then why hide her?""

Robert looked at the photograph.

"Because Clara didn't want the world to know.""

"Why?""

"Because she was afraid.""

"Of what?""

Robert looked at me.

"Of becoming a target.""

The same fear.

The same pattern.

Everyone hiding.

Everyone protecting.

"How did she become involved with the company?""

"Your grandfather wanted to make up for lost time.""

Robert sighed.

"He gave her a position.""

"And Victor?""

Robert's expression changed.

"Victor hated it.""

"Why?""

"Because Clara was brilliant.""

I looked at the key.

"And she found something.""

Robert nodded.

"She discovered someone was stealing from the company.""

My heart raced.

"Victor?""

Robert looked at me.

"No.""

The room went silent.

"Then who?""

Robert took a breath.

"Someone even Victor was afraid of.""

Nobody spoke.

"Who?""

Robert looked at the key.

"Your grandfather's biggest investor.""

I frowned.

"An investor?""

"Yes.""

"What was their name?""

Robert looked at me.

"Harold Whitmore.""

The name meant nothing.

But Robert's expression told me it should.

"Where is he now?""

Robert's answer was quiet.

"Dead.""

I felt confused.

"Then why does this matter?""

Robert looked toward the hidden box.

"Because he wasn't killed.""

A chill went through me.

"What?""

"He disappeared.""

My mother whispered:

"And nobody ever found him.""

Robert nodded.

"Because the person who made him disappear wanted everyone to believe the problem was solved.""

I looked at the key.

"Clara knew.""

"Yes.""

"And she hid the evidence.""

"Yes.""

"Where?""

Robert looked at the key.

"Inside the vault.""

The key suddenly felt heavier in my hand.

But before we could leave, my phone buzzed.

Another message.

This time, there was a photo attached.

A picture of us standing inside the old company building.

Taken moments ago.

Someone had been watching.

The message below said:

You are looking in the wrong direction.

Then another message appeared.

Clara wasn't hiding from us.

She was hiding from you.

I stared at the screen.

My blood turned cold.

"Daniel?""

I didn't answer.

Because beneath the message was one more thing.

A location.

A place.

May you like

And a name.

Clara Carter.
