Chapter 21: The Sister Hidden From The World
The photograph fell from my hand.
Nobody moved to pick it up.
Because everyone was trying to understand the same impossible truth.
A sister.
I had a sister.
A person who had existed my entire life.
And I never knew.
"Where is she?""
My voice sounded distant.
Samuel looked at me.
"I don't know.""
I laughed quietly.
Of course.
Another person missing.
Another unanswered question.
"How old is she?""
Clara answered softly.
"Older than you.""
I looked at her.
"How much older?""
"Two years.""
My mind struggled.
My father had another child.
Another family.
Another life.
And somehow, everyone knew except me.
"Why?""
The word came out broken.
"Why didn't anyone tell me?""
Grandma looked at me.
"Because your father asked us not to.""
I turned.
"Dad?""
She nodded.
"He wanted to protect both of you.""
"From what?""
Samuel answered.
"From Harold Whitmore.""
I looked at him.
"What did my sister have to do with him?""
Samuel looked at the photograph.
"She was the key.""
I frowned.
"What does that mean?""
"Your father discovered Harold wasn't just trying to take the company.""
"Then what?""
"He was trying to control the family.""
I listened.
"Your sister was used as leverage.""
My stomach turned.
"By who?""
Samuel hesitated.
Then:
"Laura.""
I froze.
"My sister's mother?""
Samuel nodded.
I looked at Clara.
Her face was full of pain.
"You're saying Laura helped Harold?""
"Not willingly at first.""
"What happened?""
Samuel explained.
"Laura was young. She trusted the wrong people.""
"Harold manipulated her.""
"Yes.""
"Then why disappear?""
Samuel looked at the photograph.
"Because she realized the truth.""
"And my sister?""
"She took her and ran.""
I stared.
"So my sister has been hiding all this time?""
"Yes.""
"Where?""
Nobody answered.
Until my phone buzzed.
A message.
Unknown number.
But this time, there was no threat.
Only a name.
And a location.
My hands shook.
Because the name was:
Emily Carter.
My sister.
The location was only thirty minutes away.
I looked up.
"She's here.""
Everyone became silent.
Grandma stood.
"Daniel...""
"I need to see her.""
Samuel nodded.
"You should.""
"Why?""
He looked serious.
"Because Emily knows the last piece.""
"What last piece?""
Samuel looked at the brass key.
"The reason your grandfather created the vault.""
The house was small.
Almost hidden.
Similar to Clara's.
I wondered how many people in my family had been living secret lives.
How many doors had existed that I never knew about.
I knocked.
Nothing.
I knocked again.
Then the door opened.
A woman stood there.
She was around my age.
Maybe a little older.
Her eyes immediately filled with tears.
"Daniel.""
Hearing my name from her felt strange.
Like hearing an echo of myself.
"Emily?""
She nodded.
For a moment, neither of us moved.
Then she stepped forward.
"I always wondered what you would look like.""
My throat tightened.
"You knew about me?""
She nodded.
"Yes.""
"How long?""
"My whole life.""
That hurt.
More than I expected.
"Why didn't you find me?""
Her eyes filled with sadness.
"Because Dad made me promise.""
Another promise.
Another secret.
I almost couldn't handle it.
"Everyone keeps saying that.""
Emily looked down.
"I know.""
She opened the door.
"Come in.""
Inside was a wall covered with photographs.
My father.
My grandfather.
Me.
And her.
A life hidden beside mine.
"I don't understand.""
She turned.
"I know.""
"Why did Dad separate us?""
"He didn't.""
"Then who?""
Emily took a deep breath.
"Your father was trying to protect us from someone.""
"Who?""
She looked at me.
"The person who killed him.""
My heart stopped.
"You know who killed Dad?""
She nodded.
"I know who ordered it.""
The room became silent.
"Who?""
Emily looked toward the photographs.
Then said:
"Someone in this family.""
I felt cold.
"Who?""
She reached into a drawer.
Pulled out a folder.
And placed it in my hands.
"Before you judge them...""
She looked at me.
"Remember this.""
"What?""
"The person who betrayed your father...""
She paused.
"...was also the person who tried hardest to save him.""
I opened the folder.
Inside was one final document.
A confession.
Signed by someone I knew.
Someone I trusted.
Someone who had been beside me through every step.
May you like
The signature at the bottom made my blood run cold.
Grandma Eleanor Carter.
