Chapter 6: The Stranger Who Knew My Wife

The next morning, I drove to the address Daniel found connected to the unknown account.

A small office building.

Nothing impressive.

Nothing that suggested secrets.

But when I walked inside, I immediately knew someone had been expecting me.

The receptionist looked nervous.

“Mr. Hayes?””

I stopped.

“Yes.””

A woman appeared from the hallway.

She looked around my age.

Tired.

Serious.

“I’m Rachel.””

I frowned.

“I don’t know you.””

“I know.””

She looked toward the door.

“Can we talk somewhere private?””

Every instinct told me to leave.

But I stayed.

Because I needed answers.

We entered a small conference room.

Rachel closed the door.

Then she placed a photograph on the table.

My blood ran cold.

It was Sarah.

But younger.

Standing beside a man I had never seen before.

“What is this?””

Rachel looked at me.

“That man is my brother.””

I said nothing.

“He worked with Sarah years ago.””

“Worked where?””

Rachel hesitated.

“At a financial company.””

I stared at the photo.

“And?””

“And he was the person who helped Sarah learn how to move money without being noticed.””

My chest tightened.

“Why are you telling me this?””

“Because my brother disappeared.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“He found out Sarah was planning something bigger.””

The room felt smaller.

“What bigger?””

Rachel looked directly at me.

“She wasn’t trying to leave you.””

“Then what was she doing?””

Rachel lowered her voice.

“She was trying to take everything.””

I stood.

“That’s impossible.””

“I wish it was.””

She pulled out a folder.

Inside were copies of documents.

Property records.

Financial forms.

And one page that made my hands shake.

A life insurance document.

With my name on it.

I looked at Rachel.

“What is this?””

She didn’t answer immediately.

Then she said:

“Something Sarah prepared before your son found the box.””

I stared at the paper.

The world suddenly felt unstable.

Because now I understood.

Sarah wasn’t just trying to remove Michael’s memories.

She wasn’t just trying to control the house.

She was preparing for a future where I was no longer there.

I looked up.

“Why didn’t you go to the police?””

Rachel’s eyes filled with frustration.

“I tried.””

“And?””

“No one listened.””

“Why?””

“Because Sarah was always good at appearing innocent.””

That sentence felt familiar.

Too familiar.

I thought about all the dinners.

All the smiles.

All the times people praised her.

The perfect wife.

The caring stepmother.

The woman who had convinced everyone.

My phone rang.

It was Michael.

I answered immediately.

“Michael?””

His voice sounded scared.

“Dad.””

“What happened?””

“I found something.””

I stood.

“What?””

A pause.

Then:

“Something in Sarah’s room.””

My heart raced.

“Where are you?””

“At home.””

“I’m coming.””

I looked at Rachel.

She knew from my expression.

“You found something.””

I nodded.

And for the first time, she looked afraid too.

“Marcus.””

“What?””

“Be careful.””

“Why?””

She stared at the documents.

“Because people who spend years hiding secrets don’t give them up easily.””

I rushed home.

When I entered the house, Michael was standing in the hallway.

Holding a small black notebook.

His face was pale.

“What is it?””

He handed it to me.

“I found it behind her closet.””

I opened the cover.

The first page contained dates.

Names.

Numbers.

Then I saw my own name.

Written dozens of times.

Underneath it was a sentence that made my entire body go cold.

Final step begins when Marcus trusts me completely.

I looked at Michael.

He looked back at me.

And we both realized the same thing.

The woman who sat at our dinner table.

The woman who kissed me goodbye every morning.

May you like

The woman I trusted with my family…

Had been waiting for the perfect moment to destroy it.
