Chapter 18: The Plan That Started Before I Met Her

I couldn’t move.

The notebook sat open in my hands.

A stranger’s handwriting.

A stranger’s words.

A stranger’s plan.

The marriage was only the beginning.

Those seven words changed everything.

Because until that moment, I believed Sarah’s betrayal started with greed.

With resentment.

With jealousy.

But this was different.

This meant the marriage itself had been part of something bigger.

Daniel carefully took the notebook from me.

“Don’t touch too much.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because this may be evidence.””

Evidence.

That word felt strange.

My entire life had become a case file.

My marriage.

My family.

My memories.

Everything reduced to documents and proof.

Jordan stood near the doorway.

“I didn’t know.””

I looked at him.

“I believe you.””

He nodded.

But he still looked guilty.

“I should have looked harder.””

“You were a kid.””

“I was old enough.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

I looked around the room.

“Everyone keeps blaming themselves for what Sarah did.””

Nobody spoke.

“Michael thought he caused problems.””

Jordan thought he should have stopped his mother.

I thought I should have seen everything.””

I closed the notebook.

“But the person responsible is the person who made the choices.””

For a moment, nobody said anything.

Then Daniel opened another document from the drawer.

“Marcus.””

I turned.

“What?””

He looked serious.

“You need to see this.””

He handed me a contract.

The names at the bottom made my stomach drop.

Sarah.

And Ethan.

Together.

The date was from before I met Sarah.

Years before.

The contract was not about business.

It was about information.

My information.

My company.

My finances.

My family.

I looked up.

“She was researching me.””

Daniel nodded.

“Before she met you.””

I felt sick.

All the romantic memories.

The coffee shop.

The conversations.

The way she seemed to understand my pain.

Were they real?

Or was every moment calculated?

I wanted to believe there had been something genuine.

But the evidence kept pulling me in the opposite direction.

Michael walked closer.

“Dad.””

I looked at him.

“I’m sorry.””

“For what?””

“For bringing this into your life.””

I immediately shook my head.

“No.””

“But if I wasn’t here—”

I stopped him.

“Don’t ever say that.””

He looked at me.

“You are not the reason bad people make bad choices.””

His eyes filled.

And for the first time, he nodded.

Not because he was convinced.

Because he wanted to believe me.

We left the house with everything we could legally collect.

But before we reached the car, my phone rang.

Sarah.

I stared at the screen.

Everyone looked at me.

I answered.

“Hello.””

“Marcus.””

Her voice was different.

Not angry.

Not confident.

Tired.

“What do you want?””

“I need to talk.””

“Why?””

“Because you found the notebook.””

I looked at Daniel.

“How do you know?””

A pause.

Then:

“Because Ethan told me.””

My chest tightened.

“You’re still working with him.””

“No.””

The answer came quickly.

Too quickly.

“Then why does he know what I found?””

Silence.

Finally, Sarah whispered:

“Because he’s the reason I did everything.””

I froze.

“What?””

“Marcus, listen to me.””

“No.””

My voice hardened.

“You don’t get to suddenly become honest when you’re losing.””

“I’m trying to protect you.””

I almost laughed.

“Protect me?””

“Yes.””

“After everything?””

“Because I made mistakes.””

The word shocked me.

Mistakes.

Not choices.

Not plans.

Mistakes.

“What happened?””

She was quiet.

Then she said:

“Ethan threatened me.””

I looked at the phone.

“What?””

“He had something over me.””

“What?””

“I can’t explain over the phone.””

“Then come explain.””

Another pause.

“I can’t.””

“Why?””

Her voice dropped.

“Because he knows I’m talking to you.””

A chill moved through me.

“Sarah.””

“Yes?””

“Where are you?””

No answer.

“Sarah?””

Then she whispered:

“Marcus… if you want the truth about what happened before we met…”

The line crackled.

“…you need to find Ethan before he finds you.””

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

And suddenly, the enemy wasn’t clear anymore.

Sarah had lied.

She had hurt us.

But now there was someone else moving behind the scenes.

May you like

Someone who had been planning from the beginning.

And he was getting closer.
