Chapter 22: The Secret Buried Beneath My Father’s Name

The first thing I did after Ethan’s call was go through every box my father left behind.

Not quickly.

Not casually.

Carefully.

Because I finally understood something.

The truth was never going to announce itself.

People who hide secrets don’t leave them sitting in plain sight.

They bury them.

They disguise them.

They make them look ordinary.

For years, I had believed my father was a successful businessman who retired peacefully.

That was the story everyone knew.

But now I was beginning to realize there was another story underneath.

One nobody wanted me to hear.

Michael sat across from me in the office.

He watched as I opened another box.

“Dad?””

“Yeah?””

“Are you scared?””

The question surprised me.

I looked at him.

“Why do you ask?””

“Because you keep looking at everything like you’re expecting it to disappear.””

I stopped.

Because he was right.

That was exactly how I felt.

Like everything I knew could vanish if I looked too closely.

I smiled faintly.

“I guess I am.””

Michael looked down.

“I thought adults weren’t supposed to be scared.””

I laughed quietly.

“Adults are scared all the time.””

“Then why do they pretend?””

I looked at him.

“Because they think they’re protecting people.””

He nodded slowly.

Like he understood.

Because he had been doing the same thing.

I opened another folder.

Inside were old business contracts.

Most were meaningless.

Then I saw a name.

Cole.

My heart jumped.

The document was dated twenty-eight years earlier.

A partnership agreement between my father and Ethan’s father.

I read every page.

At first, everything looked normal.

Investments.

Property.

Business expansion.

Then I reached the final section.

A disagreement clause.

Something about ownership transfer.

I frowned.

“Dad.””

Michael looked over.

“What?””

“I think I found something.””

I called Daniel immediately.

He arrived within an hour.

When he saw the document, his expression changed.

“This is important.””

“What is it?””

Daniel pointed at the agreement.

“Your father and Ethan’s father created a private trust.””

“A trust?””

“Yes.””

“For what?””

He continued reading.

“Protection of company assets.””

I frowned.

“Why would that be hidden?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Because someone wanted it hidden.””

That sentence bothered me.

“How much was in it?””

He checked the document.

Then looked up.

“A lot.””

“How much?””

He told me.

I sat back.

The amount was large.

But it wasn’t the money that disturbed me.

It was the fact that I never knew it existed.

“Who controlled it?””

Daniel continued reading.

“Your father.””

“After he died?””

“That’s unclear.””

“Find out.””

Daniel nodded.

While he worked, I kept searching.

Then I found another envelope.

Older than the others.

No name.

No label.

Just a date.

The year before my father died.

I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

From my father.

Marcus,

If you are reading this, then someone has forced you to look deeper than I wanted.

I froze.

Another warning.

Another person who knew something was coming.

I spent my life trying to protect you from mistakes I made.

My hands tightened.

But protection has consequences. Sometimes hiding the truth creates a bigger danger than revealing it.

I continued.

The Cole family believes I betrayed them.

They are wrong.

I looked at Daniel.

“He knew.””

Daniel nodded.

The letter continued.

I did not steal from them. I protected what belonged to my family.

My heart raced.

But Ethan will never believe that.

The name shocked me.

Ethan.

My father knew Ethan.

Not just his family.

Him.

He was young when everything happened. Angry. Hurt. And anger can become something dangerous when someone feeds it.

I swallowed.

Then came the final paragraph.

Marcus, if Ethan ever comes back into your life, do not fight him with anger.

Find the truth.

Because the truth will prove who was betrayed.

I lowered the letter.

For years, I thought my father’s silence was weakness.

Now I wondered if it had been fear.

Not fear for himself.

Fear for me.

That evening, something happened that changed everything.

Sarah appeared at my front door.

Again.

But this time, she wasn’t alone.

She had a folder in her hand.

And she looked exhausted.

“I need to tell you something.””

I didn’t invite her in.

“What?””

She looked past me.

Saw Michael.

Then looked away.

“I know where Ethan is.””

My entire body became alert.

“Where?””

“I can’t tell you here.””

“You don’t get to make demands.””

“I know.””

Her voice cracked.

“I’m not here to control anything anymore.””

I studied her.

For the first time, she looked like someone who had lost.

Not someone who had lost a fight.

Someone who had lost herself.

“What happened?””

She looked at the folder.

“He found out I kept copies.””

“Copies of what?””

“Everything.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Why?””

“Because I knew one day you would discover the truth.””

I almost laughed.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you stop?””

Tears filled her eyes.

“Because I was afraid.””

The answer surprised me.

“Of Ethan?””

She nodded.

“And of what would happen if I admitted the truth.””

I looked at her.

“You hurt my son.””

“I know.””

“You betrayed me.””

“I know.””

“Then why should I listen?””

She looked at Michael.

Then back at me.

“Because Ethan isn’t trying to take your money anymore.””

A chill moved through me.

“What is he trying to take?””

May you like

Sarah whispered:

“Your son.””
