Chapter 11: Sarah’s Final Move

I didn’t wait.

The moment Jordan said Sarah was coming, I stood.

“Where is she?””

“I don’t know.””

“Did she say anything else?””

Jordan shook his head.

“She said she wanted to talk.””

I almost laughed.

Talk.

That was what people said when they wanted control.

Not answers.

Control.

I took the drive.

“Come with me.””

Jordan looked surprised.

“Where?””

“Somewhere safe.””

He hesitated.

“She’ll know.””

“Let her.””

Because I was done hiding.

For years, I had avoided conflict.

I believed patience could solve anything.

I believed if I loved people enough, they would eventually choose to do the right thing.

But some people didn’t change because they were loved.

They changed only when they were forced to face the truth.

When we arrived home, Michael was waiting.

He immediately noticed Jordan.

“Is he okay?””

I nodded.

“He’s going to tell us everything.””

Michael looked at Jordan.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Jordan said:

“I’m sorry.””

Michael’s expression changed.

“For what?””

“For knowing something was wrong and not helping you sooner.””

Michael looked down.

“I thought you hated me.””

Jordan shook his head.

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“I was jealous sometimes.””

“Of what?””

“You had something I didn’t.””

Michael looked confused.

“What?””

“A dad who loved you.””

The room went quiet.

Because that was the thing Sarah never understood.

Michael wasn’t an obstacle.

He was my son.

And love was not something that had a limited supply.

A knock came at the door.

Everyone froze.

Sarah.

I walked toward the entrance.

“Dad.””

Michael grabbed my arm.

I looked at him.

“I’m okay.””

I opened the door.

Sarah stood outside.

Perfectly dressed.

Calm.

Like she wasn’t standing in front of a family she had almost destroyed.

“Marcus.””

I stared at her.

“You came.””

“I wanted to explain.””

“No.””

She paused.

“What?””

“You wanted to control the conversation.””

Her expression changed slightly.

“I don’t know what you think you found.””

“I know enough.””

She looked past me.

Saw Jordan.

Her face hardened.

“Jordan.””

He looked away.

“Mom.””

That single word carried years of disappointment.

Sarah stepped inside.

“You have no idea what you’re doing.””

Jordan shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at her.

“I know exactly what I’m doing.””

She looked shocked.

“You’re choosing them?””

Jordan didn’t answer.

That hurt her more than an argument.

I noticed.

Because Sarah could handle anger.

She could handle accusations.

But she couldn’t handle losing control.

I held up the drive.

“Everything is on here.””

For the first time, her confidence disappeared.

“What is that?””

“You tell me.””

She looked at Jordan.

Then back at me.

“You stole from me.””

Jordan laughed bitterly.

“No.””

“You betrayed your own mother.””

“No.””

His voice became stronger.

“I stopped protecting your lies.””

The room went silent.

Sarah looked at him like she was seeing a stranger.

Then she turned back to me.

“You think you know everything?””

I didn’t answer.

She stepped closer.

“You don’t know why I did what I did.””

“Try me.””

Her face tightened.

“You think Michael’s mother was perfect?””

I felt my anger rise.

“Do not.””

“I’m serious.””

“No.””

I pointed toward the door.

“You don’t get to rewrite her story because you got caught.””

Sarah stared at me.

Then she smiled.

Not a happy smile.

A warning.

“You really don’t remember.””

Those words again.

I felt a chill.

“What am I supposed to remember?””

She reached into her purse.

Pulled out a folded document.

Then placed it on the table.

“This.””

I looked down.

My heart stopped.

Because the signature at the bottom…

Was mine.
