Chapter 24: The Truth My Father Buried
We drove to my father’s old property before sunrise.
Nobody spoke much.
The silence wasn’t uncomfortable.
It was heavy.
Everyone was thinking.
Everyone was afraid.
Even Sarah.
That was the part I noticed most.
She wasn’t pretending anymore.
She wasn’t trying to appear powerful.
She was scared.
When we arrived, the house looked exactly how I remembered.
Old.
Quiet.
Almost frozen in time.
I hadn’t been there since my father died.
I never understood why.
I told myself I was busy.
That life moved on.
But maybe part of me avoided it because I knew there were things waiting.
Daniel checked the area.
“Someone was here recently.””
I looked at the house.
“Ethan.””
“Probably.””
We entered carefully.
The inside smelled like dust and old wood.
But there were signs someone had been living there.
A chair moved.
Fresh food.
A notebook on the table.
Then I saw it.
A photograph.
My father.
Ethan’s father.
And another person.
A child.
I picked it up.
“Who is this?””
Sarah walked closer.
Her face changed.
“I’ve seen this before.””
“Where?””
“In Ethan’s files.””
I looked at her.
“What does it mean?””
“I don’t know.””
Daniel picked up another document.
“Marcus.””
I walked over.
He handed it to me.
A birth record.
My hands shook.
Because the name on it was familiar.
But impossible.
I read it again.
Then again.
“No.””
“What?””
I looked at Daniel.
“This can’t be right.””
“What does it say?””
I couldn’t answer.
Because the truth felt too strange.
Sarah took the paper.
She read it.
And she whispered:
“Oh my God.””
“What?””
She looked at me.
“Ethan wasn’t trying to destroy your family.””
I stared at her.
“Then what was he trying to do?””
She looked at the birth record.
“He was trying to find his family.””
The room went silent.
I looked at the document.
The name.
The date.
The connection.
Everything shifted.
Because suddenly, Ethan’s anger made sense.
Not justified.
Not forgiven.
But understandable.
He believed something had been stolen from him.
And my father had been connected.
A sound came from upstairs.
Everyone froze.
Daniel motioned for us to stay quiet.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Careful.
Someone was inside.
Then a voice.
“I knew you would come here eventually.””
Ethan.
He stepped into view.
Older than the photograph.
Tired.
Angry.
But not the monster I imagined.
He looked at me.
“Marcus Hayes.””
I stood still.
“You’ve been hiding from me for years.””
“I never knew you existed.””
He laughed softly.
“That’s the point.””
I tightened my jaw.
“What do you want?””
He looked at the document in my hand.
“I want what your father took from me.””
“What?””
“My family.””
The words echoed.
Sarah stepped forward.
“Ethan.””
He looked at her.
“You betrayed me.””
Her face changed.
“I made mistakes.””
“You chose him.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“I chose my son.””
Ethan looked at Jordan.
Then Michael.
And something changed in his expression.
Pain.
Not anger.
Pain.
“You don’t understand.””
I looked at him.
“Then explain.””
He stared at me.
“Your father made a choice.””
“What choice?””
“He protected one child.””
A pause.
“And abandoned another.””
The room went silent.
My heart raced.
“Who?””
Ethan looked directly at me.
Then at Michael.
And whispered:
“The child your family erased.””
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Then Ethan said the words that changed everything.
“The child who was supposed to inherit everything…”
May you like
A pause.
“…was me.””
