Chapter 14: The Truth Hidden in the Safe

The next week changed everything.

I changed the locks.

I moved every important document.

I secured Michael’s accounts.

And for the first time in years, my house felt peaceful.

But peace didn’t mean everything was okay.

It meant we finally had room to breathe.

Michael was different.

Not completely healed.

That doesn’t happen overnight.

But he was talking more.

Eating downstairs.

Laughing occasionally.

Small things.

Things I had taken for granted.

One evening, he sat across from me at dinner.

The same table where he had once been told he didn’t belong.

“Dad?””

“Yeah?””

“Do you think she hated Mom?””

The question caught me off guard.

I put down my fork.

“I think she was angry.””

“At Mom?””

“Maybe.””

“Why?””

I thought about it.

Because the truth was complicated.

“Sometimes people compare themselves to others and feel like they’re losing.””

Michael looked confused.

“Mom wasn’t competing with her.””

“I know.””

“That’s what makes it sad.””

I nodded.

Because it was.

Sarah had spent years fighting a battle nobody else was fighting.

She was trying to defeat a memory.

And in the process, she hurt real people.

A few days later, Daniel called.

“Marcus.””

I knew from his voice it was important.

“What happened?””

“We found the original copy of the protection agreement.””

“Where?””

“In your old attorney’s files.””

“And?””

“There’s a handwritten note attached.””

My heart tightened.

“What does it say?””

“I think you should see it.””

I met him that afternoon.

He handed me an envelope.

Inside was a letter.

Again.

From Michael’s mother.

I took a deep breath before opening it.

Marcus,

If you are reading this, something has happened that made this document necessary.

I closed my eyes.

Not again.

Not another warning from the past.

I want you to know I never created this because I didn’t trust you.

My chest tightened.

I created it because I knew you loved people deeply. Sometimes too deeply.

I smiled sadly.

That sounded exactly like her.

You always want to believe the best in everyone.

I continued reading.

But after I am gone, Michael will need someone who protects him even when protecting him is difficult.

I swallowed.

Please do not let anyone convince him that he is less important because I am gone.

My hands shook.

Then came the sentence that made me stop.

I am worried about Sarah.

I looked up.

Daniel was watching me.

“She knew.””

I nodded.

I continued.

I have noticed Sarah becoming interested in things that have nothing to do with family.

Money.

Property.

Control.

My heart sank.

I don’t want you to hate her.

That was the kind of person Michael’s mother was.

Even while warning me, she didn’t want revenge.

But please be careful.

The letter ended with one final sentence.

The most dangerous people are not always the ones who appear cruel. Sometimes they are the ones who make you feel safest.

I folded the letter.

For a long time, I said nothing.

Daniel finally spoke.

“Marcus.””

“She knew.””

“Yes.””

“And she still tried to warn me without destroying Sarah.””

Daniel nodded.

“She was protecting everyone.””

I looked at the letter.

“She was better than me.””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“She trusted you to do the right thing.””

That night, I returned home.

But something felt wrong.

The back door was slightly open.

My heart immediately raced.

I entered carefully.

“Michael?””

No answer.

I moved through the house.

Nothing was missing.

No broken windows.

No obvious damage.

Then I reached my office.

The drawer where I kept important documents was open.

My stomach dropped.

I checked inside.

The documents were there.

The letters.

The financial records.

Everything.

Except one thing.

The original protection agreement.

Someone had taken it.

I called Daniel.

No answer.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

From Sarah.

You finally found the truth.

Another message followed.

Now you’ll understand why I had to do what I did.

I stared at the screen.

Then the final message appeared.

Ask your son what his mother was really afraid of.

I slowly turned toward Michael’s bedroom.

Because suddenly, I realized something.

Sarah wasn’t trying to hide the past.

May you like

She was trying to reveal a different version of it.

And she knew something about Michael’s mother that even I didn’t know.
