Chapter 21: The Secret My Father Took to His Grave
I spent the entire night reading through my father’s old files.
Every document.
Every letter.
Every record.
I searched for one name.
Cole.
And eventually, I found it.
Ethan’s family.
My father had known them.
Not casually.
Not professionally.
Personally.
There were old business agreements.
Disputes.
Letters.
Arguments.
Things I had never seen.
My father had spent years hiding a conflict that apparently never ended.
The next morning, I called Daniel.
“I need you to look into my father.””
There was a pause.
“Your father?””
“Yes.””
“What exactly are you looking for?””
“The connection between him and Ethan Cole.””
Daniel became quiet.
“Marcus.””
“What?””
“You think this started before Sarah?””
“I know it did.””
Two hours later, Daniel arrived.
He looked concerned.
“I found something.””
“What?””
He placed a file down.
“Your father and Ethan’s father were business partners.””
I looked at him.
“What happened?””
“A disagreement.””
“What kind?””
“Money.””
I sighed.
Of course.
Money.
But Daniel continued.
“Not just money.””
I looked up.
“What else?””
“Trust.””
That word felt familiar.
“Explain.””
“Your father believed Ethan’s father was hiding information from him.””
“And?””
“And Ethan’s father believed your father betrayed him.””
I looked at the documents.
“So they hated each other.””
“Basically.””
I leaned back.
“And now Ethan is continuing something that happened decades ago.””
Daniel nodded.
“That’s what it looks like.””
I felt exhausted.
A war I never started had somehow become my responsibility.
Later that day, Michael found me in my office.
“You look tired.””
I smiled slightly.
“Thanks.””
He sat down.
“Did you find something?””
I hesitated.
Then nodded.
“Your grandfather knew Ethan’s family.””
Michael looked surprised.
“Really?””
“Yes.””
“What does that mean?””
“I don’t know yet.””
He looked at the documents.
“Does it mean Sarah was telling the truth?””
I thought about it.
“About Ethan?””
“Yes.””
“Maybe.””
Michael was quiet.
Then he said:
“Does that change what she did?””
I looked at him.
“No.””
He nodded.
“Good.””
I smiled sadly.
“Why?””
“Because I was worried you would forgive her because you feel guilty.””
The words hit me.
Because he was right.
I had spent years trying to understand everyone.
Except myself.
That night, I received another message.
This time from Ethan.
You finally found your father’s secret.
My blood ran cold.
I immediately showed Daniel.
“How did he know?””
He shook his head.
“I don’t know.””
Another message arrived.
Ask your father why he ruined my family.
I stared at the screen.
Then another.
Ask yourself why you were chosen.
Chosen.
That word stayed in my mind.
Not found.
Not loved.
Chosen.
I looked at the photograph of Sarah and Ethan.
I looked at the old letter from my father.
I looked at Michael.
And suddenly, the question changed.
I had spent months asking:
Why did Sarah betray me?
But maybe the real question was:
Why did Ethan choose me in the first place?
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A man spoke.
“Marcus.””
I knew immediately.
Ethan.
“What do you want?””
“To finish what my father started.””
I tightened my grip.
“You ruined my family.””
“No.””
His voice was calm.
“You ruined yours.””
“What are you talking about?””
“You believe Sarah was the beginning.””
A pause.
“She wasn’t.””
I felt a chill.
“What does that mean?””
The line went silent.
Then Ethan said:
“Your father left you a secret.””
My heart raced.
“And when you find it…”
Another pause.
“…you’ll understand why Michael’s mother was afraid.””
The call ended.
I looked at Daniel.
Then at Michael.
Because for the first time, I realized something terrifying.
Sarah had spent years trying to hide the truth.
May you like
But maybe…
She wasn’t the only one afraid of what would happen if we found it.
