Chapter 9: The Name Hidden in the Shadows

Richard Everhart looked older than Lucas had ever seen him.

The hospital room was quiet.

Too quiet.

Machines monitored his heartbeat.

Security stood outside the door.

But none of that mattered.

Because for the first time, Richard Everhart looked powerless.

Lucas stood beside the window.

Claire sat across from him.

Neither had spoken much since arriving.

Because there was one question they both wanted answered.

And they both feared the answer.

Richard finally broke the silence.

"You found Eleanor's archive.""

It wasn't a question.

Lucas looked at him.

"How did you know?""

Richard gave a tired smile.

"Because that is exactly where I would have looked.""

Claire's eyes narrowed.

"You knew about it.""

Richard looked at her.

"Yes.""

"And you never told me.""

"No.""

"Why?""

Richard looked away.

"Because I failed your mother.""

The honesty surprised them.

Claire leaned forward.

"What happened?""

Richard closed his eyes.

"Your mother discovered the financial crimes.""

"We know.""

"No.""

His voice became heavier.

"You know the beginning.""

A pause.

"You don't know the reason.""

Lucas crossed his arms.

"Then tell us.""

Richard looked at Claire.

"Your mother didn't just discover someone stealing from Everhart Industries.""

"Then what?""

"She discovered someone was planning to destroy the company.""

Lucas frowned.

"Why?""

Richard stared at the floor.

"Because Everhart Industries wasn't just a company.""

Claire waited.

Richard continued.

"It was built on a technology platform that could change the world.""

Lucas understood.

Artificial intelligence.

The very foundation of what he had built his own company around.

"What kind of technology?""

Richard looked at him.

"The original AI architecture.""

Lucas froze.

"My company?""

"Was inspired by it.""

The revelation hit hard.

Richard continued.

"Your father and Eleanor were working together to develop it.""

Claire looked shocked.

"My mother worked with Daniel?""

Richard nodded.

"They trusted each other.""

Lucas looked confused.

"Then why would he betray her?""

Richard didn't answer.

Because he didn't have to.

The answer was visible in his face.

He didn't know.

Or worse.

He knew part of it.

Claire stood.

"My mother trusted him.""

Richard nodded.

"Yes.""

"Then why did she disappear?""

Richard looked at her.

"Because she discovered Daniel wasn't acting alone.""

The room became silent.

Lucas asked:

"Who was with him?""

Richard looked at the door.

As if afraid someone might hear.

Then he whispered:

"Someone you would never suspect.""

Claire stepped closer.

"Who?""

Richard looked at Lucas.

"Your mother.""

Lucas froze.

"What?""

"My mother?""

Richard nodded slowly.

"Daniel's wife.""

Lucas felt like the ground disappeared.

His mother.

A woman he remembered as kind.

Gentle.

The person who raised him.

"No.""

Richard looked devastated.

"I wish it wasn't true.""

Claire shook her head.

"My mother would have told me.""

"She couldn't.""

"Why?""

Richard looked at her.

"Because Eleanor discovered the truth too late.""

Lucas stepped away.

This was impossible.

His father.

His mother.

The two people who shaped his childhood.

Connected to the destruction of Eleanor Bennett.

"You're lying.""

Richard didn't defend himself.

That bothered Lucas more.

"If you believe that," Richard said quietly, "I understand.""

Lucas looked at him.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

Richard's eyes filled with regret.

"Because I wanted to protect your memory of them.""

"And what about the truth?""

Richard looked away.

"I was a coward.""

Nobody spoke.

Then Claire noticed something.

A small detail.

Something that didn't fit.

"Wait.""

Everyone looked at her.

"If Daniel and his wife were involved...""

She looked at Richard.

"Why did my mother tell me to find Lucas?""

Richard became silent.

That question mattered.

Because it didn't make sense.

If the entire Everhart family was involved, why trust Lucas?

Claire continued.

"She knew his parents.""

She looked at Lucas.

"She knew his family.""

A pause.

"But she still chose him.""

Richard looked at Lucas.

And slowly, realization appeared on his face.

"Because Eleanor knew.""

"Knew what?"" Lucas asked.

Richard whispered:

"She knew Lucas wasn't their son.""

The room stopped.

Lucas stared.

"What did you say?""

Claire looked equally shocked.

Richard's hands trembled.

"Your birth records were changed.""

Lucas couldn't breathe.

"What?""

"Your parents adopted you.""

The words destroyed everything.

Lucas stepped back.

"No.""

Richard looked at him.

"I'm sorry.""

"No.""

His voice became louder.

"That's impossible.""

Claire watched him.

Not with suspicion.

With sympathy.

Because she understood what it felt like to discover your entire history was built on missing pieces.

Richard continued.

"Eleanor discovered the truth.""

Lucas looked at him.

"What truth?""

Richard looked toward Claire.

Then back at Lucas.

"Your biological parents were connected to the original AI project.""

A pause.

"And they were killed because someone wanted that technology.""

Lucas felt numb.

His entire identity had become a question.

His family.

His company.

His past.

Everything.

Then Claire's phone buzzed.

A new message.

She looked at it.

And her face changed.

Lucas noticed.

"What?""

She turned the screen toward him.

The message contained only one sentence.

*Now tell him who his real father was.*

Lucas stared.

Because beneath the message was a name.

A name neither of them expected.

May you like

A name that changed everything.

*Eleanor Bennett.*
