Chapter 12: The Father Who Came Back From the Grave

Nobody spoke after the call ended.

Because one impossible thing had just become real.

Daniel Everhart was alive.

The man whose death had shaped Lucas's entire life had just spoken to him.

Richard sat frozen.

His face had lost all color.

Claire looked between them.

"Richard.""

The older man didn't respond.

"Richard.""

Finally, he looked up.

"I thought he was dead.""

Lucas stared.

"You thought?""

Richard closed his eyes.

"Yes.""

The answer was not enough.

Lucas's anger returned.

"How do you not know if your own son is dead?""

Richard looked at him.

"Because Daniel wanted everyone to believe he was.""

Lucas stepped back.

"What?""

Richard swallowed.

"After Eleanor disappeared, Daniel changed.""

"Changed how?""

"He became paranoid.""

Claire interrupted.

"Because he was being hunted.""

Richard looked at her.

"Yes.""

Lucas stared.

"So Daniel was hiding.""

"Yes.""

"And you knew?""

"No.""

Richard looked at him.

"But I suspected.""

Lucas laughed.

"Of course.""

The bitterness was obvious.

"You suspected.""

A pause.

"You always suspected.""

Richard accepted the accusation.

"Yes.""

Claire looked at the notebook.

"My mother knew.""

Richard nodded.

"She believed Daniel was alive.""

"Then why didn't she tell anyone?""

Richard looked at Claire.

"Because she didn't know who she could trust.""

The words hurt.

Because they explained everything.

Eleanor wasn't hiding because she was guilty.

She was hiding because she was surrounded by enemies.

Lucas walked away from the bed.

He needed space.

Needed air.

His entire life had become a puzzle where every answer created three more questions.

He had spent years trying to escape his family's shadow.

Building Everhart Vector.

Creating something independent.

But now he understood.

He had never escaped.

He had been carrying the family secret inside him.

Claire followed him into the hospital hallway.

"You okay?""

Lucas almost laughed.

"No.""

The honesty surprised her.

"I don't know who I am.""

Claire looked at him.

"Yes, you do.""

He shook his head.

"No.""

"You are not your family.""

Lucas looked at her.

"You don't know that.""

"I do.""

"How?""

"Because my mother believed in you.""

The answer stopped him.

Claire continued.

"She knew who you were before anyone else did.""

Lucas looked away.

"She was wrong.""

"No.""

Claire stepped closer.

"She was the only person who was right.""

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Lucas said:

"What do we do now?""

Claire looked toward the hospital room.

"We find Daniel.""

"And if he's telling the truth?""

"Then we find out who really destroyed our families.""

They returned to Richard.

The older man was waiting.

"I know where Daniel might go.""

Lucas looked at him.

"Where?""

Richard hesitated.

"The old laboratory.""

Claire frowned.

"I thought you said it was destroyed.""

"It was.""

"Then why would he go there?""

Richard looked at Lucas.

"Because that is where he hid the one thing Victoria never found.""

"What?""

Richard's voice lowered.

"The original research.""

Lucas understood.

The technology that started everything.

The technology people killed for.

The technology that connected their families.

"How do we get there?""

Richard looked at him.

"You don't.""

Lucas frowned.

"What?""

"You are exactly what they want.""

"My son—"

"No.""

Richard's voice became firm.

"You are the reason this started.""

The statement hurt.

But it was true.

"If someone has spent twenty years protecting that secret, they will come after you.""

Lucas looked at Claire.

"Then Claire goes alone?""

"No.""

Claire answered before Richard could.

Everyone looked at her.

"I've spent fifteen years alone.""

She picked up Eleanor's notebook.

"I'm not doing it anymore.""

Richard looked at them both.

For the first time, he saw something he hadn't expected.

Not a billionaire.

Not a victim.

Not an abandoned child.

A team.

And that frightened him.

Because together, Lucas and Claire represented everything the enemy feared.

The truth.

Before they left, Richard grabbed Lucas's arm.

"Wait.""

Lucas turned.

Richard looked at him.

"There is one more thing you need to know.""

"What?""

Richard hesitated.

Then whispered:

"Daniel didn't disappear after the laboratory explosion.""

Lucas waited.

"He disappeared before it.""

The words made no sense.

"Explain.""

Richard looked terrified.

"Because the explosion wasn't an accident.""

A pause.

"It was an execution.""

Claire froze.

"Who was executed?""

Richard looked at Lucas.

"Your biological father.""

Lucas felt the world stop.

"But Daniel is my father.""

Richard shook his head.

"No.""

A pause.

"Daniel wasn't the man who created you.""

The truth came out quietly.

But it changed everything.

"Daniel was the man who stole you.""

Lucas stared.

Richard continued:

"Your real father was Nathaniel Bennett.""

"And my mother?""

Richard looked at Claire.

"Eleanor.""

Silence.

The final piece fell into place.

Lucas wasn't just the heir to a company.

He was the last survivor of a family someone tried to erase.

And somewhere in Seattle, a man who stole his identity for decades was waiting.

May you like

A man who knew the truth.

A man who had finally come back from the dead.
