Chapter 2: The Woman Nobody Was Supposed to Find
The silence after Richard Everhart's confession was heavier than any accusation.
Nearly four hundred people stood frozen, watching a billionaire speak to a woman everyone had assumed was a nobody.
Claire Bennett.
The temporary employee.
The woman Madison had publicly embarrassed.
The woman nobody had bothered to learn about.
Now every person in the ballroom wanted to know the same thing.
Who was she?
Lucas stepped forward.
"Grandfather.""
Richard finally looked away from Claire.
His expression was impossible to read.
"Lucas.""
"What is happening?""
The older man opened his mouth.
But before he could answer, Claire spoke.
"Nothing.""
Everyone looked at her.
She picked up the torn piece of silk from Madison's hand and placed it gently on the table.
"This was a misunderstanding.""
Madison almost laughed.
A misunderstanding?
She had ripped someone's dress.
She had insulted her publicly.
And now this woman was trying to protect everyone from the consequences?
That made Madison angry.
"No," Madison said sharply.
"This is not a misunderstanding.""
She looked at Richard.
"Mr. Everhart, I apologize if there has been confusion, but this woman was pretending to be staff while wearing a designer dress and following your grandson around all night.""
Richard's expression changed.
Not toward Claire.
Toward Madison.
And that was when Madison realized something terrifying.
He wasn't listening to her.
He was judging her.
"Miss Vale," Richard said coldly.
She immediately stood straighter.
"Yes?""
"Do you know what my mother used to say?""
Madison blinked.
"No.""
Richard looked at Claire.
"She used to say the most dangerous mistake arrogant people make is believing they can identify someone's value by their clothing.""
Nobody spoke.
Madison's face became pale.
Because the message was clear.
He was not defending her.
He was defending Claire.
Lucas watched his grandfather carefully.
He had spent years studying people.
It was part of being successful in business.
And he had never seen Richard Everhart look at anyone this way.
Not with admiration.
Not even with respect.
With regret.
"Grandfather," Lucas said again.
"Who is she?""
Richard took a breath.
Then Claire answered.
"I am nobody.""
Lucas frowned.
"No.""
His voice was quiet.
"But you are.""
Claire looked at him.
For a moment, something passed between them.
Something neither understood.
Then she turned away.
"I should leave.""
Madison smiled slightly.
Finally.
The stranger was retreating.
But Lucas moved before she could walk away.
"No.""
Everyone looked at him.
Lucas ignored them.
"You don't get to leave after this.""
Claire studied him.
"Why?""
"Because someone attacked you.""
"I can handle myself.""
"I believe that.""
His eyes moved briefly to the torn dress.
"But that doesn't mean you should have to.""
The words surprised her.
For a second, Claire almost forgot who he was.
Almost forgot that Lucas Everhart represented everything she had spent years avoiding.
Power.
Money.
Families who believed they owned the world.
She stepped back.
"You don't know me.""
Lucas looked at her.
"Maybe not.""
A pause.
"But I want to.""
The room reacted instantly.
A billionaire CEO publicly defending a mysterious woman was already shocking.
Admitting interest was something else entirely.
Madison's expression hardened.
"Lucas.""
He turned toward her.
"What?""
"You cannot be serious.""
"I am.""
"You barely know her.""
Lucas glanced at Claire.
"Neither do I know you as well as I thought.""
That sentence destroyed Madison more effectively than any insult.
Because everyone heard it.
Including the reporters standing near the entrance.
Including the cameras recording the event.
Including the people who would spread this story across Seattle before midnight.
Madison's reputation had always been built on perfection.
The perfect clothes.
The perfect parties.
The perfect relationship.
But tonight, the perfect image had cracked.
And Claire Bennett was standing in the center of the damage.
A security officer approached Richard quietly.
"Sir, there is a situation outside.""
Richard looked irritated.
"What situation?""
"The press has gathered.""
Of course they had.
Someone had already leaked what happened.
The story was too powerful to stay inside the ballroom.
Billionaire's girlfriend humiliates waitress.
Then billionaire family reveals waitress is someone important.
It was exactly the kind of story people loved.
Richard closed his eyes briefly.
Then he looked at Claire.
"You cannot hide forever.""
Claire's expression changed.
"I am not hiding.""
"No?""
"No.""
Richard looked at the ruined dress.
"Then why did you come here pretending to be someone else?""
The question struck harder than anything Madison had said.
Lucas noticed.
Claire looked away.
Because Richard had asked the one question she couldn't answer.
Why had she come?
Why had she entered the Everhart world after spending fifteen years away?
Why had she stood among the people who destroyed her family?
The truth was simple.
She wasn't there for charity.
She wasn't there for romance.
And she certainly wasn't there to meet Lucas Everhart.
She was there because of a secret hidden for fifteen years.
A secret that could destroy one of America's richest families.
"I came here," Claire finally said, "because someone invited me.""
Richard's face changed.
"Who?""
Claire reached into her purse.
She pulled out a small envelope.
Old.
Worn.
Sealed.
Richard saw it.
And all color disappeared from his face.
Because he recognized the handwriting.
Everyone noticed.
Lucas stepped closer.
"What is that?""
Claire looked at Richard.
"Something your family should have received a long time ago.""
Richard didn't move.
"Where did you get that?""
Claire's eyes hardened.
"From my mother.""
The ballroom became silent again.
Lucas felt something cold move through him.
His mother had died when he was young.
His family rarely spoke about her.
There were always secrets surrounding her disappearance from public life.
And now Claire Bennett was standing there holding something connected to his family.
Richard whispered:
"Your mother...""
Claire looked directly at him.
"Yes.""
A pause.
"My mother was Eleanor Bennett.""
Lucas froze.
That name.
He knew it.
Everyone in the Everhart family knew it.
Eleanor Bennett had been Richard Everhart's most trusted business partner twenty years earlier.
Until one night.
Until a scandal.
Until she disappeared.
Lucas looked at Claire.
"No.""
The word escaped before he could stop it.
Claire met his eyes.
May you like
"Yes.""
And in that moment, Lucas Everhart realized the woman Madison had called "the help" might be the person who could expose everything his family had spent years hiding.
