Chapter 7: The Ghost From Eleanor’s Past

The message disappeared from Claire’s phone within seconds.

Not because she deleted it.

Because it vanished on its own.

The screen flashed once.

Then the words were gone.

Lucas stared at the device in disbelief.

"That isn't possible.""

Claire looked at him.

"It is.""

"No.""

He took the phone from her hand carefully.

"This wasn't just a text message. It was encrypted.""

Claire nodded.

"My mother spent years dealing with people who knew how to hide things.""

Lucas looked up.

"You think whoever sent this has access to your phone?""

"Not my phone.""

Her voice became quieter.

"Everything.""

The realization settled between them.

Someone had been watching.

Not just tonight.

Not just since the gala.

For years.

Lucas handed the phone back.

"We need to go to the police.""

Claire immediately shook her head.

"No.""

"Why?""

"Because if this person can erase messages, manipulate records, and reach inside the Everhart system, what makes you think ordinary police can protect us?""

Lucas didn't like that she was right.

But he couldn't ignore it.

"Then what do we do?""

Claire looked toward the dark water.

"We find out who sent it.""

The answer was simple.

Too simple.

Lucas had spent his entire career solving impossible problems with money, technology, and intelligence.

But Claire didn't approach problems like him.

She approached them like someone who had spent years surviving.

"You've been investigating this alone.""

"Yes.""

"For fifteen years?""

"Yes.""

Lucas stared at her.

"How?""

Claire looked back.

"Because when nobody believes you, you learn how to find answers without asking permission.""

The words stayed with him.

Because that was the biggest difference between them.

Lucas had always lived in a world where doors opened.

Claire had lived in one where doors were locked.

They drove to an old neighborhood outside downtown Seattle.

Lucas expected a modern office.

A private investigator.

Some hidden underground operation.

Instead, Claire led him to a small house with peeling paint and an overgrown garden.

"This is where you grew up?""

She nodded.

"My mother bought it before she started working with Everhart Industries.""

Lucas looked at the house.

There was something strange about seeing the place.

It wasn't luxurious.

It wasn't impressive.

It was ordinary.

And somehow, that made it more meaningful.

Claire unlocked the door.

Inside, everything was untouched.

Almost like someone had frozen time.

Old photographs.

Bookshelves.

A piano.

A kitchen where someone had once cooked meals every night.

Lucas walked slowly.

"This place has been empty for years?""

"Yes.""

"Why keep it?""

Claire ran her fingers over a wooden table.

"Because my mother believed people leave pieces of themselves behind.""

Lucas noticed something.

On the wall near the staircase was a photograph.

Eleanor Bennett.

Young.

Confident.

Standing beside Richard Everhart.

But there was another person in the picture.

A man Lucas didn't recognize.

"Who is that?""

Claire looked at the photograph.

Her expression changed.

"I don't know.""

Lucas studied the image.

The man was standing close to Eleanor.

Too close to be a stranger.

"Your mother never told you?""

"No.""

"Why keep the photo?""

"Because she never removed it.""

That bothered him.

People removed painful memories.

They destroyed reminders.

Unless the memory was important.

Claire walked toward a bookshelf.

"She hid things here.""

Lucas looked at her.

"What kind of things?""

"Information.""

She pulled out several books.

At first, they looked ordinary.

Then she opened one.

Inside were handwritten notes.

Names.

Dates.

Financial records.

Lucas recognized some of them.

Everhart executives.

Board members.

Lawyers.

"Your mother was building a case.""

Claire nodded.

"She knew someone was stealing from the company.""

Lucas read through the pages.

Then he stopped.

One name caught his attention.

Alexander Everhart.

His uncle.

"He was involved.""

Claire looked at him.

"Maybe.""

Lucas frowned.

"Maybe?""

"My mother wrote his name many times.""

"That seems clear.""

"No.""

Claire pointed to the notes.

"Look.""

Lucas studied them.

Beside Alexander's name, Eleanor had written one word.

"Victim.""

Lucas froze.

"What?""

Claire nodded.

"She didn't believe Alexander was the person behind everything.""

Lucas looked confused.

"Then why did she investigate him?""

"Because she thought he knew something.""

A sudden sound interrupted them.

A floorboard creaked upstairs.

Both of them froze.

Lucas turned.

"Did you hear that?""

Claire nodded.

Slowly.

Someone was inside.

Lucas moved toward the staircase.

Claire grabbed his arm.

"Don't.""

He looked at her.

"You don't know what's up there.""

"Exactly.""

She reached into a drawer.

Lucas stared.

"You have a weapon?""

"No.""

She pulled out a small flashlight.

"Experience.""

They moved upstairs carefully.

The house was silent.

Too silent.

Then they reached the hallway.

One bedroom door was slightly open.

Claire stared.

"My mother's room.""

She hadn't entered it in years.

Lucas looked at her.

"Are you sure?""

No answer.

She pushed the door open.

The room looked untouched.

Except for one thing.

A file sat on the bed.

Fresh.

New.

Impossible.

Claire approached slowly.

Lucas followed.

On the cover was a name.

ELEANOR BENNETT.

Claire opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

The same photograph from downstairs.

But this one had something different.

Someone had written on the back.

*She trusted the wrong man.*

Lucas looked at Claire.

"Who?""

Claire turned the photo over.

Her hands shook.

Because beneath the sentence was a signature.

A name she recognized.

A name her mother had spent years trying to uncover.

"Who is it?"" Lucas asked.

Claire whispered:

"Daniel Everhart.""

Lucas went completely still.

His father.

The man everyone thought was dead.

The man Claire claimed helped destroy her mother's life.

May you like

But the signature was impossible.

Because Daniel Everhart had died twelve years ago.
