Chapter 4: The Letter That Could Destroy an Empire

The envelope sat in the center of Richard Everhart’s desk like a loaded weapon.

Nobody touched it.

Nobody breathed normally.

For fifteen years, the Everhart family had built walls around their secrets.

They buried uncomfortable truths beneath legal agreements, carefully prepared statements, and expensive lawyers.

But now, all of those walls had been reduced to a single piece of paper.

A letter.

Written by Eleanor Bennett.

A woman who had vanished from the Everhart world after uncovering something powerful enough to destroy careers, friendships, and family bonds.

Lucas stared at the envelope.

His entire life had been built around one belief.

His father was a respected businessman.

His grandfather was a brilliant leader.

His family was complicated, but honorable.

Now, in one night, everything had become uncertain.

"Open it," Lucas said.

Richard didn't move.

The older man looked at Claire.

"You should.""

Claire shook her head.

"No.""

Richard frowned.

"Why?""

"Because this isn't about me anymore.""

Her eyes moved to Lucas.

"It's about him.""

Lucas looked surprised.

"Me?""

Claire nodded.

"My mother wanted you to know the truth.""

Richard slowly reached for the envelope.

His hand trembled.

Lucas noticed.

His grandfather had signed billion-dollar contracts without hesitation.

He had negotiated with presidents and CEOs.

He had faced economic disasters and company collapses.

But this letter scared him.

That alone told Lucas everything.

Richard carefully opened the envelope.

Inside was a single sheet of paper.

Old.

Yellowed.

The handwriting was elegant and familiar.

Richard recognized it instantly.

He closed his eyes.

"Eleanor.""

Claire watched him.

"You remember her handwriting.""

Richard swallowed.

"I remember everything about her.""

The words carried a sadness Lucas had never heard before.

Richard began reading.

At first, his expression remained controlled.

Then it changed.

A line appeared between his eyebrows.

His jaw tightened.

Then his face became completely empty.

Lucas stepped closer.

"What does it say?""

Richard didn't answer.

"Grandfather.""

Still nothing.

Claire looked at him.

"Read the last paragraph.""

Richard looked up sharply.

"You know what's in it?""

"My mother told me.""

"Then why did you make me read it?""

Claire's expression hardened.

"Because you needed to see it with your own eyes.""

Richard lowered his gaze again.

Finally, he read the last lines.

And then he whispered:

"No.""

Lucas looked between them.

"What?""

Richard folded the paper.

"You need to leave.""

Lucas stared.

"What?""

Richard looked at Claire.

"Both of you.""

The sudden command shocked them.

Claire's eyes narrowed.

"You're afraid.""

Richard looked at her.

"Yes.""

The honesty was unexpected.

Lucas stepped forward.

"Afraid of what?""

Richard looked at his grandson.

"Afraid that everything I built will collapse.""

The answer was not what Lucas expected.

He expected denial.

Anger.

An attack against Claire.

Instead, Richard admitted fear.

Because deep down, he knew.

Something terrible was coming.

"What did the letter say?"" Lucas demanded.

Richard remained silent.

Then the office door suddenly opened.

A man entered without knocking.

Alexander Everhart.

Lucas's uncle.

The current chairman of Everhart Industries.

The man who had spent decades protecting the family image.

His expensive suit was perfect.

His smile was perfect.

Everything about him looked controlled.

Except his eyes.

His eyes went directly to Claire.

And immediately, he knew.

"She's here.""

Nobody responded.

Alexander looked at Richard.

"You found her.""

Lucas watched carefully.

"You knew about her?""

Alexander ignored him.

"Richard, we need to talk.""

"No.""

Alexander's expression changed slightly.

"This is family business.""

Lucas laughed bitterly.

"Apparently everyone knows the family business except me.""

Alexander finally looked at him.

"Lucas.""

"No.""

Lucas stepped closer.

"Don't do that.""

"Do what?""

"Talk to me like I'm still twelve years old.""

The room became tense.

Alexander had always treated Lucas like a talented child.

Someone intelligent enough to impress but never powerful enough to challenge him.

That was changing.

"I want answers.""

Alexander looked at Claire.

"This woman is dangerous.""

Claire almost smiled.

"Interesting.""

"What?""

"You didn't ask who I am.""

Alexander remained silent.

"You already knew.""

The realization hit Lucas instantly.

His uncle knew.

Not only did he know about Claire.

He feared her.

"How long?"" Lucas asked.

Alexander looked away.

"Lucas.""

"How long have you known she existed?""

Nobody answered.

And that silence was the answer.

Lucas felt something inside him break.

His entire family had kept secrets from him.

For years.

"Everyone knew.""

His voice became quiet.

"Everyone except me.""

Richard looked ashamed.

"Lucas—"

"No.""

He stepped back.

"Don't explain.""

Claire watched him carefully.

For the first time, she saw anger replace his confidence.

Not billionaire anger.

Not wounded pride.

Something deeper.

Betrayal.

Alexander finally spoke.

"You don't understand what you're involving yourself in.""

Lucas looked at him.

"Then explain.""

Alexander's expression hardened.

"You think knowing the truth makes you stronger.""

A pause.

"It doesn't.""

"Why?""

"Because the truth has consequences.""

Claire interrupted.

"The truth only has consequences for people who are guilty.""

Alexander looked at her.

And for the first time, his calm expression disappeared.

"You have no idea what you're doing.""

Claire stepped closer.

"My mother died because someone wanted her silent.""

The room went cold.

"My entire childhood was built around questions your family refused to answer.""

She looked directly at Alexander.

"So don't tell me I don't know what I'm doing.""

Nobody moved.

Then Alexander turned toward Richard.

"You need to handle this.""

Lucas noticed the wording.

Not "we.""

Not "the family.""

"You.""

That was interesting.

Alexander wasn't surprised.

He was worried.

And Lucas knew something important.

Fear revealed more than words.

A moment later, Alexander left.

The silence returned.

Lucas looked at Richard.

"Tell me everything.""

Richard looked exhausted.

"I can't.""

Lucas stared.

"Can't?""

"If I tell you, you become part of this.""

Lucas laughed quietly.

"I already am.""

Richard looked at Claire.

Then back at Lucas.

"The letter wasn't just about your father.""

"What else?""

Richard answered slowly.

"It was about your inheritance.""

Lucas frowned.

"My inheritance?""

Richard nodded.

"Eleanor discovered that your father changed the ownership structure of Everhart Industries.""

Lucas's expression changed.

"Meaning?""

"Meaning someone was trying to take control of everything.""

"And my father was involved?""

Richard looked away.

"Yes.""

Lucas felt the room spinning.

Then Claire spoke softly.

"There's more.""

Everyone looked at her.

"My mother believed your father wasn't acting alone.""

Richard closed his eyes.

Because he knew.

He knew exactly what she was about to say.

"He had help.""

Lucas looked at Richard.

"Who?""

Richard didn't answer.

Claire did.

"Someone in this room.""

May you like

The accusation was devastating.

And suddenly, every person in the Everhart family became a suspect.
