Chapter 11: The Family They Tried to Erase

The revelation changed the meaning of everything.

Lucas sat in silence while Claire continued reading Eleanor's notebook.

The world outside the hospital continued moving.

Cars drove through Seattle streets.

People went to work.

People lived ordinary lives.

But inside that room, Lucas's entire identity was being rewritten.

"So Claire and I...""

He stopped.

He couldn't finish the sentence.

Richard understood.

"Yes.""

Lucas looked at Claire.

"You're my cousin.""

Claire nodded.

The strange thing was that neither of them felt shocked by that.

Maybe because everything else was already impossible.

Maybe because after discovering billion-dollar conspiracies and fake identities, one more secret barely seemed surprising.

But there was something else.

Something worse.

"If Nathaniel Bennett was my father," Lucas said, "why was I raised by the Everharts?""

Richard looked away.

"Because Daniel found you first.""

Lucas frowned.

"Found me?""

Richard nodded.

"Your biological parents knew someone was after them.""

Claire looked at him.

"They sent you away.""

Lucas stared.

"Where?""

Richard answered softly.

"To Eleanor.""

The room became quiet.

"Eleanor was supposed to protect you.""

Claire looked at the notebook.

"But then Daniel took him.""

Richard nodded.

"Yes.""

Lucas stood.

"Why?""

Nobody answered.

Because they all knew.

Power.

Money.

Control.

Daniel Everhart hadn't adopted Lucas out of kindness.

He had taken him because Lucas represented something valuable.

The technology.

The research.

The future.

"My entire childhood...""

Lucas struggled.

"Was a strategy?""

Richard looked devastated.

"No.""

A pause.

"Not entirely.""

Lucas looked at him.

"Not entirely?""

Richard sighed.

"Daniel cared about you.""

That made Lucas angry.

"How can you say that?""

"Because I saw it.""

Richard looked down.

"Whatever his reasons were, he loved you.""

Lucas looked away.

That was somehow harder to accept.

A villain was easier.

A monster was easier.

But a person could be both cruel and loving.

Human beings were complicated.

And that was what hurt most.

Claire closed the notebook.

"There is something else.""

Lucas looked at her.

"What?""

"My mother wrote that Daniel wasn't the person who started everything.""

Richard became tense.

"What?""

Claire showed him the page.

At the bottom was a sentence.

*Daniel was afraid of someone else.*

Lucas frowned.

"Someone above him?""

Claire nodded.

Richard looked terrified.

"No.""

"What?""

Richard stared at the page.

"I thought Daniel was the end of it.""

Lucas watched him.

"You know who it is.""

Richard didn't answer.

That was enough.

"Grandfather.""

The older man closed his eyes.

"Your grandmother.""

Silence.

Lucas felt numb.

"My grandmother?""

Richard nodded.

"Victoria Everhart.""

The name carried weight.

Lucas remembered her.

Cold.

Elegant.

Powerful.

The woman who controlled every family gathering without raising her voice.

She had died when Lucas was twenty.

A respected figure.

A woman everyone admired.

"She was involved?""

Richard whispered:

"She was the reason it all started.""

Claire looked shocked.

"Why?""

Richard looked at the window.

"Because Victoria believed the Everhart family deserved ownership of everything.""

"Even stolen technology?""

"Especially stolen technology.""

Lucas felt anger building.

"So everyone knew except me.""

Richard looked at him.

"Not everyone.""

"Who didn't?""

Richard looked at Claire.

"Your father.""

Lucas frowned.

"What?""

Richard nodded.

"Daniel discovered the truth too late.""

Claire looked confused.

"Then why did my mother disappear?""

Richard answered:

"Because Daniel tried to stop Victoria.""

Lucas went silent.

The story had changed again.

His father wasn't the villain.

He was another victim.

Another person trapped by the family machine.

"Where is Victoria's evidence?""

Richard looked at him.

"What?""

"If she started this, there must be proof.""

Richard hesitated.

"There is.""

Claire leaned forward.

"Where?""

Richard looked at Lucas.

"Inside Everhart Industries.""

"The archive.""

Richard nodded.

"But not the one you found.""

Lucas frowned.

"There is another?""

"Yes.""

"Where?""

Richard whispered:

"The original AI laboratory.""

Lucas stared.

"The lab was destroyed.""

Richard nodded.

"That is what everyone believes.""

The room became silent.

Then Lucas's phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

No one spoke.

Then a familiar voice came through.

A voice Lucas had not heard in twelve years.

A voice that belonged to the man everyone believed was dead.

"Lucas.""

His entire body froze.

The phone nearly slipped from his hand.

"Who is this?""

A pause.

Then:

"You already know.""

Lucas couldn't breathe.

Claire looked at him.

Richard's face went pale.

Because he recognized the voice too.

"Daniel.""

The voice continued.

"I know you've found Eleanor's notebook.""

Lucas whispered:

"You're alive.""

A quiet laugh came through the phone.

"That is the one thing everyone got wrong.""

The call lasted only thirty seconds.

But before it ended, Daniel said one final sentence.

May you like

"Don't trust Richard.""

Then the line went dead.
