Chapter 13: The Truth Beneath the Ruins
The old Everhart laboratory had been abandoned for seventeen years.
Officially, it had been destroyed in a catastrophic fire caused by an electrical malfunction.
The reports were clean.
The investigations were closed.
The records were sealed.
The world moved on.
But secrets had a way of surviving.
Especially when powerful people wanted them buried.
Lucas stood outside the rusted gates of the abandoned facility, staring at the place that had somehow shaped his entire life.
The building looked nothing like the futuristic research center described in old articles.
It looked dead.
Broken windows.
Cracked concrete.
Walls covered in vines.
A forgotten grave.
But Claire stood beside him, staring at it differently.
Not like a ruin.
Like a place where answers were waiting.
"This is where it happened," she said quietly.
Lucas looked at her.
"Where my father died?""
Claire nodded.
"Where your real family disappeared.""
The words were painful.
But Lucas had learned something over the last few days.
Pain was easier to handle than ignorance.
They entered through a damaged side entrance.
Inside, the air smelled old.
Dust.
Metal.
Time.
Their footsteps echoed through empty hallways.
Lucas looked around.
"My father worked here.""
Claire nodded.
"Daniel did.""
Lucas stopped.
The correction bothered him.
Because he still didn't know how to separate the people who raised him from the people who created him.
"Did he love me?""
Claire looked at him.
The question was unexpected.
"What?""
"Daniel.""
Lucas looked away.
"Was I just a project to him?""
Claire studied him.
"No.""
"How do you know?""
"Because my mother wrote about him.""
She opened Eleanor's notebook.
"There are pages about Daniel.""
Lucas looked surprised.
"What did she say?""
Claire hesitated.
"That he was a good man who made terrible choices.""
Lucas laughed softly.
"That sounds familiar.""
They continued deeper into the facility.
Eventually, they reached a hallway blocked by a collapsed wall.
Claire stopped.
"This wasn't in the reports.""
Lucas looked at the destroyed area.
"Someone did this intentionally.""
She nodded.
"The explosion didn't destroy everything.""
A pause.
"Someone finished the job afterward.""
Together, they searched through the rubble.
Hours passed.
Then Lucas noticed something.
A small metal panel hidden beneath the debris.
"This.""
Claire moved closer.
The panel required a fingerprint scan.
Lucas frowned.
"How do we open it?""
Claire looked at him.
"You.""
"What?""
She pointed.
"Your DNA.""
Lucas stared.
"Why would my DNA open it?""
"Because this system was designed before you disappeared.""
He placed his hand on the scanner.
For several seconds, nothing happened.
Then—
A green light appeared.
The door opened.
Neither of them spoke.
Because that single moment proved something impossible.
Lucas belonged here.
Not because of the Everhart name.
Because of something deeper.
Inside the hidden room was a laboratory.
Untouched.
Preserved.
Waiting.
On the central table sat a computer.
Still running.
Lucas stared.
"How?""
Claire looked around.
"Someone maintained it.""
A voice suddenly filled the room.
"Someone had to.""
Both of them turned.
A figure stood near the entrance.
Older.
Tired.
But familiar.
Lucas froze.
Daniel Everhart.
Alive.
For a moment, nobody moved.
Lucas had imagined this moment.
Anger.
Questions.
Confrontation.
But standing face-to-face with the man who had haunted his entire life felt different.
It felt empty.
"You look like him.""
Daniel's voice was quiet.
Lucas stared.
"Like who?""
"Nathaniel.""
The name hit him.
"My father.""
Daniel nodded.
"Yes.""
Claire stepped forward.
"You knew.""
Daniel looked at her.
"I knew everything.""
Her expression hardened.
"My mother trusted you.""
"I know.""
"And you let her die.""
Pain crossed Daniel's face.
"I tried to save her.""
Claire laughed bitterly.
"Try harder.""
The words cut.
Daniel accepted them.
Because he knew he deserved them.
Lucas stepped forward.
"Why?""
Daniel looked at him.
"Because your grandmother found out about Nathaniel's research.""
"The AI system.""
"Yes.""
"What did she want?""
"Control.""
Daniel walked toward the old computer.
"Victoria believed whoever controlled the technology controlled the future.""
Lucas looked around.
"And me?""
Daniel became silent.
That silence was the answer.
"You took me.""
Daniel looked at him.
"I protected you.""
"You stole my life.""
"No.""
Daniel's voice broke.
"I saved it.""
Lucas stared.
"From what?""
Daniel looked at Claire.
Then back at Lucas.
"From your own family.""
The room became silent.
Daniel explained everything.
Nathaniel Bennett had created the original AI architecture.
Eleanor helped protect the research.
Victoria Everhart wanted ownership.
Daniel discovered the plan.
But by then, it was too late.
Nathaniel was killed.
Eleanor disappeared.
And Lucas became the final piece.
"The explosion wasn't meant to destroy the laboratory," Daniel said.
Lucas looked at him.
"It was meant to kill me.""
Claire frowned.
"But you survived.""
Daniel nodded.
"Because someone warned me.""
"Who?""
Daniel looked at Lucas.
"Your mother.""
Lucas froze.
"My adoptive mother?""
Daniel nodded.
"She knew what Victoria was doing.""
The truth became even more complicated.
Everyone had lied.
Everyone had secrets.
But not everyone was evil.
Some people were simply trapped.
Then the computer screen turned on.
A file appeared.
*FINAL PROTOCOL*
Daniel's expression changed.
"No.""
Lucas noticed.
"You know what that is.""
Daniel looked afraid.
"Yes.""
"What?""
Daniel whispered:
"The evidence Victoria left behind.""
Claire stepped closer.
"Why would she leave evidence?""
Daniel looked at the screen.
"Because she was never afraid of being caught.""
A pause.
"She was afraid someone would survive.""
The file opened.
And a video appeared.
Victoria Everhart.
Recorded years earlier.
Her face appeared on the screen.
"If you are watching this, then someone has finally uncovered the truth.""
Lucas stared.
The dead woman was speaking.
"Lucas Everhart.""
His name.
"Or should I say...""
Victoria smiled.
"...Lucas Bennett.""
The room went silent.
"Congratulations.""
Her voice remained calm.
"You found the truth.""
A pause.
"But truth is only valuable if you survive it.""
The video ended.
Then another file appeared.
A location.
A name.
The person who had been controlling everything.
Lucas stared.
Because the name was impossible.
The same name that appeared in every mystery.
Every betrayal.
May you like
Every secret.
*Richard Everhart.*
