Chapter 7: The Enemy Sitting at Our Table

The hardest part about betrayal was not discovering who hurt you.

It was realizing how long they had been standing beside you while doing it.

For years, Andrew had been more than Daniel’s best friend.

He had been part of our lives.

He was there when Daniel proposed.

He was there when we bought our first house.

He gave a speech at our wedding about how lucky Daniel was to find someone who “kept him grounded.””

I remembered laughing at that.

I remembered thinking Andrew understood me.

That memory felt disgusting now.

Because every kind word had become a question.

Every smile had become suspicious.

Every moment I trusted him felt like evidence against me.

Daniel stood across my office, staring at the photograph.

“We need to be careful.””

I looked at him.

“Because he’s dangerous?””

Daniel nodded.

“No.””

He paused.

“Because he’s smart.””

That was the difference between people like Andrew and people like Chloe.

Chloe wanted attention.

Eleanor wanted control.

But Andrew?

Andrew wanted something else.

Power.

And people who wanted power rarely made emotional mistakes.

They planned.

They waited.

They watched.

“Have you spoken to him since the wedding?”” I asked.

Daniel shook his head.

“Not after I saw this.””

“Good.””

He looked at me.

“You don’t trust me to handle this?””

I held his gaze.

“This isn’t about trust.””

The words hurt him.

I saw it.

But I continued.

“It’s about strategy.””

For years, I had approached life emotionally.

I had believed honesty would protect me.

That love would make people act fairly.

But I had learned something important.

Good people need boundaries.

Because bad people use kindness as an invitation.

Marcus entered the room holding another folder.

“Sorry to interrupt.””

He placed it on my desk.

“But you need to see this.””

I opened it.

Inside were bank records.

Andrew’s company.

Payments.

Connections.

My eyes moved quickly.

Then stopped.

“No.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“What?””

I looked at him.

“Andrew isn’t working with Richard.””

Daniel frowned.

“What do you mean?””

I turned the document toward him.

“They’re working against each other.””

Silence.

That changed everything.

Because we had assumed one conspiracy.

One enemy.

One plan.

But the evidence suggested something worse.

The Sterling empire wasn’t being attacked by one person.

It was a battlefield.

Different people were trying to take pieces for themselves.

Marcus pointed at the records.

“Richard moved money through these accounts.””

“Yes.””

“And Andrew moved money through different accounts.””

“Yes.””

Daniel ran a hand through his hair.

“So they both stole from the company?””

“Looks like it.””

“But they don’t know about each other.””

I nodded.

“That’s what makes sense.””

Two predators inside the same house.

Both believing they were the smartest person in the room.

A dangerous combination.

Daniel looked at me.

“What do we do?””

I closed the folder.

“We let them think they’re winning.””

His eyebrows lifted.

“Vivienne…”

“If they know we found out, they’ll destroy evidence.””

He looked uncomfortable.

“You’re talking like this is a war.””

I stared at him.

“It is.””

The words were quiet.

But true.

The next day, Daniel returned to Sterling headquarters.

For the first time in years, he walked into the building without his family’s approval controlling his every move.

He called me before entering.

“I’m nervous.””

I smiled slightly.

“Good.””

He laughed softly.

“That’s not very comforting.””

“It means you understand the situation.””

“I used to think confidence meant never being afraid.””

“And now?””

He was silent.

“Now I think confidence means being afraid and doing the right thing anyway.””

That was the first moment I felt something change.

Not forgiveness.

Not yet.

But respect.

Daniel was finally becoming the person I thought he could be.

Later that afternoon, he called.

“Andrew wants to meet.””

“When?””

“Tonight.””

“Where?””

“He chose the place.””

I frowned.

“Of course he did.””

Daniel sighed.

“You think he knows?””

“No.””

I looked at the evidence again.

“But I think he suspects.””

The meeting happened at an expensive private club downtown.

The kind of place where powerful people discussed secrets behind closed doors.

Daniel arrived first.

Andrew arrived ten minutes later.

From the photographs Marcus sent me, I already knew what he looked like.

But seeing him in person through the security feed was different.

He looked exactly the same.

Confident.

Relaxed.

Almost amused.

That bothered me.

People who were innocent usually looked confused when accused.

Guilty people often looked offended.

But Andrew looked prepared.

He sat across from Daniel.

“Rough wedding night.””

Daniel didn’t smile.

“You could say that.””

Andrew ordered a drink.

“Your family is a mess.””

Interesting.

Not “I’m sorry.””

Not “What happened?””

Just an observation.

Daniel leaned forward.

“You knew about the ring.””

Andrew looked at him.

Then laughed.

A quiet laugh.

“I was wondering when you’d ask.””

My stomach tightened when Daniel told me later.

Because that sentence alone was a confession.

“You admit it?”” Daniel asked.

Andrew leaned back.

“I admit I knew Chloe was planning something.””

“And you helped her?””

“No.””

Daniel frowned.

“Then explain.””

Andrew looked around the room.

“Your sister wanted to embarrass Vivienne.””

The way he said my name made my skin crawl.

“She wanted to prove your wife wasn’t what she seemed.””

“And you let her?””

“I wanted to see what would happen.””

Daniel’s face hardened.

“You used my wife as an experiment?””

Andrew smiled slightly.

“Your wife is interesting.””

That sentence made Daniel angry.

“Don’t talk about her like she’s a puzzle.””

Andrew ignored him.

“She hides too much.””

There it was.

The truth.

They weren’t afraid because they hated me.

They were afraid because they didn’t understand me.

Andrew continued.

“You married a woman nobody knows anything about.””

Daniel stared.

“What are you saying?””

“I’m saying you should ask yourself why someone with her background chose a quiet life.””

My heart stopped when Daniel repeated those words to me.

Because Andrew knew.

Not everything.

But enough.

“He’s been investigating me,” I said.

Daniel nodded.

“And he found something.””

“What?””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“He knows your father wasn’t just a businessman.””

The room felt colder.

My father.

The one subject I rarely discussed.

The one secret I kept even from Daniel.

Because some truths were dangerous.

“What exactly does he know?””

Daniel looked at me.

“He knows your father once controlled a financial network bigger than Sterling.””

I closed my eyes.

So that was it.

That was the real reason.

The Sterling family never hated the outsider.

They feared the unknown.

They feared that the quiet pregnant woman they mocked wasn’t powerless.

They feared that I had inherited something far greater than money.

Influence.

Information.

Control.

And now Andrew was trying to find out how much.

“Vivienne,” Daniel said softly.

I opened my eyes.

“It’s time you tell me everything.””

I looked at him.

For three years, I had protected him from a world he didn’t understand.

Now I realized something.

Protecting him had allowed others to manipulate him.

May you like

So I made a decision.

“No more secrets.””
