Chapter 6: The Betrayal Hidden Behind the Smile

The name on the document stayed on my screen.

I read it once.

Then again.

Hoping somehow my eyes had made a mistake.

They hadn’t.

“Marcus.””

“Yes?””

“Verify everything.””

He nodded.

“Already started.””

I looked at the signature again.

A person I had welcomed into my home.

A person who had hugged me.

A person who had called me family.

The betrayal felt different from Eleanor’s cruelty.

Different from Chloe’s jealousy.

Because those two had never hidden what they thought of me.

This person had.

“Who would have access to this?”” Marcus asked.

I didn’t answer.

Because I already knew.

Sterling Corporation had several executives who could approve transfers.

But only a few had authority over private investment movements.

Only a few knew the internal structure.

And one of them was someone Daniel trusted completely.

His uncle.

Richard Sterling.

Daniel’s father’s younger brother.

The man everyone described as loyal.

The man who gave speeches about family.

The man who had toasted my marriage three years ago and said:

“Welcome to the Sterling legacy.””

I remembered his smile.

Now it looked different.

Marcus placed another file on my desk.

“There’s more.””

I opened it.

My expression changed.

“What?””

“Look at the dates.””

I did.

The transfers started shortly after Daniel and I got married.

Shortly after I entered the family.

My stomach tightened.

“Why would he do this?””

Marcus looked at me carefully.

“Maybe because you weren’t the only outsider.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“Richard Sterling was never the heir.””

The words settled.

“Daniel’s father was.””

I leaned back.

The Sterling family had always talked about legacy.

But legacy was just another word for power.

And power created enemies.

“Richard believed the company should have been his,” Marcus continued.

“So he waited.””

“Looks like it.””

I looked at the files.

Years of planning.

Years of theft.

Years of pretending.

Then something else caught my attention.

A payment.

A very large payment.

Sent to an unknown account.

I zoomed in.

The account holder name appeared.

My blood went cold.

Because it wasn’t Richard.

It wasn’t Eleanor.

It wasn’t anyone in the Sterling family.

It was a company I recognized.

A company connected to someone from my own past.

Someone I thought was gone forever.

“Marcus.””

“Yes?””

“Find everything you can about this company.””

He looked at the name.

Then back at me.

“Are you sure?””

“No.””

I stared at the screen.

“But I’m sure I need the truth.””

That afternoon, Daniel arrived at my office.

Not the confident Sterling heir.

Not the man who walked into rooms expecting respect.

Just Daniel.

Tired.

Lost.

He stood in the doorway.

“I found something.””

I nodded.

“So did I.””

He stepped inside.

“Richard?””

I looked at him.

“You know?””

He nodded slowly.

“My father’s old files.””

I watched him sit down.

“He suspected Richard years ago.””

“Why didn’t he stop him?””

Daniel looked away.

“Because Richard was his brother.””

That answer said everything.

Another Sterling weakness.

They protected family even when family destroyed them.

“What else did you find?”” I asked.

Daniel hesitated.

Then placed a folder on my desk.

“Something about the ring.””

I frowned.

“The ring?””

He nodded.

“Chloe didn’t lose it.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“She never had it stolen.””

“Then why?””

Daniel’s face was full of shame.

“She was trying to test you.””

I stared.

“To test me?””

“She thought you were pretending to be innocent.””

I couldn’t believe it.

“She created an entire scene because she wanted to prove I was a thief?””

Daniel nodded.

“But that’s not all.””

He opened the folder.

Inside was a photograph.

A photograph from earlier that night.

The bridal suite hallway.

Chloe entering.

And someone else.

Someone standing in the shadows.

Someone handing her something.

I leaned closer.

My breath stopped.

Because the person in the photograph wasn’t Richard.

It wasn’t Eleanor.

It wasn’t a stranger.

It was someone I knew.

Someone Daniel knew.

Someone who had spent the entire night pretending to defend me.

My husband’s best friend.

Andrew.

Daniel saw my expression.

“I didn’t know.””

I looked at him.

“This is your best friend.””

“I know.””

“Someone you trusted.””

“I know.””

The pain in his voice was real.

For the first time, I saw something different in Daniel.

Not guilt.

Not fear.

Determination.

He stood.

“I’m going to confront him.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because if Andrew is involved, he’s not acting alone.””

Daniel stopped.

I pointed at the documents.

“The ring was a distraction.””

I looked at all the evidence.

“The money.””

I looked at him.

“The accusations.””

Then I whispered:

“Someone wanted me gone.””

The room became silent.

Daniel’s face changed.

“Why?””

I looked down at my stomach.

At the life growing inside me.

Then back at him.

“Because they’re afraid of what happens when I stop staying quiet.””

And for the first time, Daniel didn’t tell me to forgive.

He didn’t tell me to be patient.

He didn’t tell me to keep peace.

He simply said:

“Then we make them afraid.””

I looked at him.

Maybe our marriage was broken.

Maybe trust would take years to rebuild.

But standing there, surrounded by evidence of betrayal, I saw something I hadn’t seen in a long time.

A man finally willing to fight.

May you like

Not for his family’s reputation.

For the woman they tried to destroy.
