Chapter 5: The Man Who Finally Chose Me
The wedding ended without a goodbye.
No final dance.
No celebration.
No happy photographs.
The guests left quietly, carrying pieces of the scandal with them.
By morning, everyone in the city would know something happened.
The Sterling family could control many things.
But they couldn’t control whispers.
Daniel and I left the ballroom separately.
That hurt more than I expected.
Even after everything, some part of me still wanted him beside me.
I wanted him to take my hand.
I wanted him to say, “I’m sorry.””
Not because apologies fixed everything.
But because they proved someone understood the damage.
Instead, he stood there watching me walk away.
And I hated that I still hoped he would stop me.
At the hotel entrance, my driver opened the car door.
I had hired him years before Daniel knew anything about my financial background.
He was one of the few people who knew who I really was.
“Mrs. Sterling,” he said softly.
I nodded.
“Let’s go home.””
The word felt strange.
Home.
Was the Sterling house still my home?
Or had it always been a place where I was tolerated?
As the car moved through the city, I stared out the window.
My daughter moved gently beneath my hand.
“I’m sorry,” I whispered.
Not to her.
To myself.
For accepting so little for so long.
For believing love meant endless patience.
For confusing being needed with being valued.
My phone rang.
Daniel.
I watched it ring.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
I almost ignored it.
Then I answered.
“Hello.””
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then:
“I’m sorry.””
Two words.
Simple.
But heavy.
I closed my eyes.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
His voice cracked.
“I don’t think I understood anything until tonight.””
I looked outside.
Streetlights passed across the window.
“I should have protected you.””
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised him.
But I wasn’t going to comfort him anymore.
Not tonight.
“I should have believed you.””
“Yes.””
“I should have stopped them.””
“Yes.””
A painful silence.
Then he whispered:
“Do you hate me?””
That question hurt.
Because the answer wasn’t simple.
“No.””
“Then what do you feel?””
I swallowed.
“I feel tired.””
The truth was more powerful than anger.
“I spent three years trying to earn a place in your family.””
“Vivienne…”
“I changed myself.””
I looked down at my wedding ring.
“I stayed quiet when I should have spoken.””
Another pause.
“I let them hurt me because I thought protecting your relationship with them protected our marriage.””
My voice softened.
“But I was the only one protecting it.””
Daniel didn’t respond.
Because he knew.
“I love you,” he finally said.
I closed my eyes.
That was the hardest part.
I still loved him.
Love didn’t disappear because someone disappointed you.
It just became painful.
“I love you too.””
His breathing changed.
“But love isn’t enough anymore.””
Silence.
“Then tell me what I can do.””
I looked at the city outside.
“Choose.””
“Choose?””
“Yes.””
My voice became steady.
“You can’t stand in the middle anymore.””
Daniel didn’t answer immediately.
Then:
“I choose you.””
My heart reacted before my mind could.
But I didn’t let myself believe too quickly.
“Words are easy.””
“I know.””
“Then prove it.””
“How?””
“Find out the truth.””
He went quiet.
“About my family?””
“Yes.””
“And if it destroys everything?””
I looked at my reflection in the window.
“The truth already destroyed everything.””
The call ended a few minutes later.
For the first time in years, I didn’t know what would happen next.
But I knew one thing.
I wasn’t afraid anymore.
The next morning, I returned to my office.
Not the small home office Daniel knew.
The real one.
The one inside the company my father built.
My assistant, Marcus, stood as I entered.
“Everything is ready.””
I nodded.
“Any response from Sterling?””
“Several.””
“Tell me.””
He handed me a tablet.
The first message was from Sterling Corporation’s legal department.
*Cease and desist.*
The second was from Eleanor’s attorney.
*Threat of defamation action.*
The third was unexpected.
A private message.
From someone inside Sterling.
Someone who had never contacted me before.
I opened it.
The message contained only one sentence.
*You were right. The theft goes higher than you think.*
Below it was a file.
A confidential document.
Marcus watched my expression.
“What is it?””
I opened the file.
And immediately felt cold.
Because the person stealing from Sterling Corporation wasn’t just taking money.
They were preparing to destroy the entire company.
And the final signature on the document belonged to someone I trusted.
May you like
Someone I never suspected.
Someone who had been smiling beside me all night.
