Chapter 11: The Person I Never Suspected

The first person I thought about was Marcus.

And I hated myself for it.

Not because I believed he betrayed me.

Because I realized something terrible.

Trust had become a weakness.

For years, I believed I could recognize good people.

I believed kindness was visible.

I believed loyalty had a certain appearance.

I was wrong.

The Sterling family proved that.

Andrew proved that.

Victoria proved that.

And now someone inside my own company had raised the same question.

Who could I trust?

“Trace it again,” I told Marcus.

“I already did.””

“Do it again.””

A pause.

“Vivienne.””

“Please.””

My voice softened.

“I need to know.””

He understood.

“Okay.””

I ended the call.

Daniel watched me.

“You think someone close to you did this.””

“I think someone wants me to think that.””

He nodded slowly.

“That’s different.””

“Yes.””

Because that was the problem.

The smartest enemy didn’t attack directly.

They controlled the information around you.

They made you doubt.

They made you suspicious.

They made you destroy your own alliances.

And whoever was behind this knew exactly what they were doing.

Three hours later, Marcus returned.

He looked exhausted.

“I found it.””

I stood immediately.

“Who?””

He placed a file on the table.

“The source account belongs to a department inside Hayes Global.””

My company.

My family’s company.

I opened the file.

Then froze.

The authorization code belonged to:

*Elena Hayes.*

My cousin.

My father’s niece.

The woman who had worked beside me since I took control of the company.

My closest executive.

“No.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Who is she?””

“My family.””

Marcus watched me carefully.

“She had access.””

“Everyone in that position has access.””

“But she also had motive.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

Marcus hesitated.

“Because your father changed his will before he died.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

“You weren’t the only person expecting an inheritance.””

I stared.

“My father never told me.””

“He wouldn’t.””

Marcus opened another document.

“Your father created a condition.””

Daniel leaned closer.

“What condition?””

“If anyone challenged Vivienne’s authority, their inheritance would be frozen.””

I looked at the paper.

My father had planned for this.

He knew someone would challenge me.

He knew someone would try to take control.

Elena included.

“How much was she supposed to receive?””

Marcus looked uncomfortable.

“A significant amount.””

I closed my eyes.

Money.

Again.

Always money.

“Where is she now?””

Marcus answered:

“She left the building two hours ago.””

“Find her.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Vivienne.””

I looked at him.

“I need to speak with her.””

“Alone?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because if she betrayed me, I need to know why.””

We found Elena at the old family estate.

The place where my father held company meetings.

The place where I spent childhood summers.

When I entered, she was standing near the fireplace.

She didn’t look surprised.

That was the first thing I noticed.

“You knew I would come.””

Elena smiled sadly.

“Yes.””

My heart sank.

“How long?””

She looked away.

“Since the beginning.””

“The beginning of what?””

“Since your father decided you would inherit everything.””

I stared.

“You’re talking about money.””

“No.””

She turned toward me.

“I’m talking about betrayal.””

I didn’t understand.

“You betrayed me.””

Her expression changed.

“You think I wanted to?””

“Yes.””

“No.””

She stepped closer.

“Vivienne, your father destroyed my family.””

I froze.

“What?””

“My father worked for yours.””

I remembered.

Her father.

A loyal employee.

Someone who disappeared from the company years ago.

“He stole.””

Elena’s eyes filled with anger.

“That’s what your father told you.””

I stayed silent.

“My father was blamed for missing funds.””

“Was he innocent?””

She looked away.

“I don’t know.””

The honesty surprised me.

“But I know he lost everything.””

I studied her.

“So you spent years pretending to be loyal while waiting for revenge?””

“No.””

“Then what?””

Her voice broke.

“I wanted answers.””

The anger in her face disappeared.

“I wanted to know why my father died believing everyone hated him.””

Silence.

I thought about my own father.

About secrets.

About incomplete truths.

“Did you send Victoria?””

“No.””

“Did you send the documents?””

“No.””

“Did you leak information to Sterling?””

“No.””

For the first time, she sounded genuinely hurt.

“Vivienne, I made mistakes. I was angry. I was jealous.””

She swallowed.

“But I didn’t destroy you.””

I wanted to believe her.

But I had learned not to trust feelings.

Only facts.

Then the lights went out.

The entire estate went dark.

Elena grabbed my arm.

“Someone’s here.””

A sound came from upstairs.

A door opening.

Daniel’s voice came through my phone.

“Vivienne?””

I whispered:

“Someone followed me.””

Then a figure appeared at the top of the stairs.

Not Elena.

Not Richard.

Not Andrew.

Someone else.

Someone I never expected.

The person smiled.

And said:

“You finally found the truth.””

My blood froze.

May you like

Because I recognized the voice.

Victoria.
