Chapter 14: The Truth My Family Buried

My mother died when I was seven.

That was the story I knew.

A car accident.

A rainy night.

A tragedy.

My father never remarried.

He never dated.

He never spoke badly about her.

He simply carried the loss quietly.

Growing up, I believed that was love.

Now I wondered if it was guilt.

The next morning, I opened every file my father left behind.

Every document.

Every letter.

Every hidden archive.

I searched for one thing.

My mother.

Her name.

Her history.

Anything.

And I found almost nothing.

That scared me more than finding a secret.

People leave traces.

Especially important people.

But my mother’s records were strangely incomplete.

Someone had erased parts of her life.

Marcus looked over my shoulder.

“This wasn’t done recently.””

“No.””

I scrolled through the files.

“Someone has been hiding this for decades.””

Daniel stood beside me.

“Who would have that kind of access?””

I didn’t answer.

Because I already knew.

Thomas.

But another question remained.

Why?

Hours passed.

Then Marcus found something.

A hidden folder.

Encrypted.

Created by my father.

The title was simple.

*For Vivienne Only.*

My hands shook.

I opened it.

Inside was a video.

My father appeared on screen.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

I couldn’t breathe.

“Vivienne.””

His voice.

After all these years.

My eyes filled immediately.

“If you’re watching this, then you finally discovered the truth.””

I covered my mouth.

My father looked directly into the camera.

“I’m sorry.””

The video continued.

“Your mother’s death was not an accident.””

The room went silent.

Daniel grabbed my hand.

I couldn’t move.

“She discovered what I had been building.””

My father continued.

“She discovered people around me were not loyal.””

A pause.

“She wanted to expose them.””

My heart broke.

“My mother knew?””

“Yes.””

My father’s voice became painful.

“But she trusted the wrong person.””

I already knew the name before he said it.

“Thomas.””

The room went still.

My father continued.

“Thomas was my friend. My partner. The person I trusted most.””

A tear rolled down my face.

“He believed everything I built belonged to him.””

The video showed my father looking away.

“I confronted him.””

A pause.

“He threatened me.””

Daniel whispered:

“Oh my God.””

My father continued.

“Your mother found out.””

My breathing became uneven.

“She tried to help me expose him.””

The screen blurred through my tears.

“And that was why she died.””

No.

My mind rejected it.

No.

My mother wasn’t taken by an accident.

She was taken because she knew the truth.

My father looked devastated.

“I spent years protecting you from this.””

He looked into the camera.

“But I failed.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

My father continued:

“Thomas didn’t just want my company.””

A pause.

“He wanted my legacy.””

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

For several minutes, there was only silence.

Then Daniel said:

“We end this.””

I looked at him.

“No.””

He frowned.

“No?””

I wiped my tears.

“We expose him.””

The difference mattered.

Because Thomas wanted chaos.

He wanted emotional reactions.

He wanted us to destroy ourselves.

We would not give him that.

We spent the next week preparing.

Quietly.

Carefully.

Thomas believed he was ahead.

That was our advantage.

We leaked small pieces of information.

Not enough to expose everything.

Enough to make him nervous.

Then we waited.

Three days later, Thomas made a mistake.

He contacted an old associate.

Someone who had been under investigation.

Someone who thought Thomas could save him.

But we were already listening.

The conversation revealed everything.

The stolen funds.

The hidden accounts.

The manipulation.

The truth.

Everything.

Except one thing.

Who ordered my mother’s death.

That answer still remained hidden.

Until Thomas made one final mistake.

He sent a message.

Not to us.

To someone else.

A person he thought was loyal.

The message contained only four words.

*She knows about her mother.*

Daniel looked at the screen.

“Who was he talking to?””

Marcus traced the number.

Then stopped.

His face changed.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“You’re not going to like this.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

Marcus slowly answered.

“The message wasn’t sent to an enemy.””

A pause.

“It was sent to someone inside your family.””

I felt cold.

“Who?””

Marcus looked down.

“The person who raised you after your father died.””

I stopped breathing.

“No.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Vivienne.””

The answer came.

The final betrayal.

The person who had protected me.

The person who comforted me.

The person who helped me survive losing my father.

The person I never questioned.

My uncle.

The man I called family.

Thomas’s message had gone to him.

And suddenly, the entire story changed.

Because Thomas wasn’t working alone.

May you like

He was protecting someone.

Someone even more powerful.
