Chapter 2: The Secret I Kept From My Husband
The first person to notice something had changed was not Daniel.
It was Eleanor.
Powerful people always recognize a shift in power.
Even when they don’t understand where it comes from.
She watched me put my phone away.
Her eyes narrowed.
“What did you just do?””
I looked at her calmly.
“Nothing.””
She hated that answer.
Because for the first time, she wasn’t controlling the conversation.
Chloe stepped closer.
“Don’t try to distract everyone.””
“I’m not.””
“Then explain why you were near my room.””
“I wasn’t.””
She laughed.
“You expect people to believe you?””
I looked directly at her.
“Yes.””
That surprised her.
Because I had never sounded so certain.
The old Vivienne would have explained.
She would have begged.
She would have tried to convince them she was innocent.
But the old Vivienne was gone.
The woman standing in that ballroom had finally accepted something.
Some people don’t misunderstand you.
They understand you perfectly.
They just decide you are beneath them.
The hotel manager cleared his throat.
“We should review security footage.””
Chloe immediately shook her head.
“No.””
The answer came too quickly.
Everyone noticed.
Her expression changed.
“I mean, there’s no need. The ring is probably somewhere nearby.””
I stared at her.
Interesting.
Very interesting.
If she truly believed I stole it, she would want the footage.
Unless…
Unless she knew what it would show.
Daniel noticed too.
His eyes moved from Chloe to Eleanor.
“Why don’t you want the cameras checked?””
Eleanor’s face hardened.
“Daniel.””
“No.””
His voice surprised me.
“Something doesn’t make sense.””
For a moment, I saw the husband I fell in love with.
The man who questioned things.
The man who cared.
But then Eleanor spoke.
“Are you accusing your own sister?””
Daniel looked away.
And there it was again.
His weakness.
His inability to stand against his family.
I felt the disappointment settle deeper than anger.
Because anger fades.
Disappointment stays.
The manager nodded.
“I’ll contact security.””
Chloe suddenly grabbed his arm.
“Wait.””
Everyone looked at her.
She released him immediately.
“I just remembered something.””
Her voice became softer.
“Vivienne hugged me earlier.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“You hugged me before the ceremony.””
“That was hours ago.””
“And maybe you took the ring then.””
A terrible silence filled the room.
The accusation was ridiculous.
But Chloe delivered it with confidence.
That was how people like her operated.
They didn’t need truth.
They needed a story.
And rich people were often believed because they had the confidence to lie beautifully.
I looked at Daniel.
“Do you believe her?””
He hesitated.
That hesitation hurt more than anything.
“You know I don’t want to believe that.””
Not “I know you didn’t do it.””
Not “My wife would never.””
Just another carefully chosen sentence.
My eyes burned.
“I understand.””
Daniel stepped toward me.
“Vivienne…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“Don’t apologize.””
“I’m trying to fix this.””
“You’re trying to make everyone comfortable.””
The words hit him.
Because they were true.
Before he could respond, my phone buzzed.
One message.
I looked down.
*The investigation has started. Initial findings will be delivered within the hour.*
I locked the screen.
Eleanor noticed.
“You’re hiding something.””
I smiled slightly.
“No.””
“Then why do you look so confident?””
Because she had no idea.
Because none of them did.
Because while they were searching my purse, I had already started searching them.
And I knew exactly where to look.
For three years, I had watched the Sterling family.
Not because I was suspicious.
Because my work required attention to detail.
I noticed things.
Numbers.
Patterns.
Mistakes.
The Sterling Corporation had been losing money quietly.
Not enough for outsiders to notice.
But enough for someone like me.
Contracts that disappeared.
Investments that failed.
Accounts that moved in strange patterns.
Daniel thought his family empire was perfect.
It wasn’t.
It was bleeding.
And someone inside the family was responsible.
I had almost told him.
Almost.
But every time I tried, Eleanor interrupted.
Every time I brought up concerns, Daniel defended them.
“They know what they’re doing.””
“They’ve built this company for fifty years.””
“You’re overthinking.””
So I stopped.
Until tonight.
Until they chose to destroy me publicly.
The doors opened again.
A security officer entered with a tablet.
The room became silent.
“Mrs. Sterling?””
Chloe stepped forward.
“Yes?””
The officer looked uncomfortable.
“We reviewed the footage.””
A smile began forming on Chloe’s face.
“Good.””
The officer looked at me.
Then at Chloe.
Then at Eleanor.
“The footage does not show Mrs. Vivienne Sterling entering the dressing room.””
The smile vanished.
Chloe blinked.
“What?””
“She was never inside.””
Whispers exploded.
Eleanor’s face turned pale.
“That’s impossible.””
The officer continued.
“However…”
Everyone froze.
“Someone else was.””
My heartbeat slowed.
Because I already knew.
The officer tapped the screen.
“And the person appears to be…”
May you like
He looked up.
“Miss Chloe Sterling.””
