Chapter 12: The Real Architect of the Betrayal
Victoria walked down the stairs slowly.
No fear.
No panic.
No urgency.
That was what terrified me.
People who had nothing to hide usually rushed to explain.
Victoria moved like someone who had already won.
Elena stepped in front of me.
A small gesture.
But I noticed.
The woman who had betrayed my trust was now protecting me.
Interesting.
Victoria looked at her.
“Still pretending to be the hero?””
Elena’s face hardened.
“You ruined everything.””
Victoria smiled.
“No.””
She looked at me.
“Your father ruined everything.””
My jaw tightened.
“Stop blaming him.””
“Why?””
Her voice became sharper.
“Because he was your father?””
“Yes.””
“Because he loved you?””
“Yes.””
She laughed softly.
“That was his weakness.””
I stepped forward.
“You don’t know him.””
“I knew him better than you.””
The words hit.
Because maybe she did.
And I hated that.
Victoria walked closer.
“Your father believed he could save everyone.””
She looked around the estate.
“He built companies. Protected employees. Helped families.””
Then she looked at me.
“But he forgot one thing.””
“What?””
“People don’t always want to be saved.””
Silence.
“You think this was about money?””
Victoria shook her head.
“Money was just the tool.””
“Then what was the goal?””
She smiled.
“Control.””
The answer was simple.
And terrifying.
“Your father controlled too much.””
She looked at Elena.
“Richard wanted the company.””
She looked at me.
“Andrew wanted information.””
Then back at herself.
“And I wanted the truth exposed.””
I narrowed my eyes.
“You’re saying you’re the one who started this?””
“No.””
She smiled.
“I’m saying I’m the one who understands it.””
A noise came from outside.
Daniel.
He entered with two security officers.
“Step away from my wife.””
Victoria looked amused.
“Your wife.””
She looked at me.
“That’s what everyone thinks is interesting.””
“What?””
“She married into Sterling.””
A pause.
“But nobody asks why Sterling needed her.””
I frowned.
“What are you talking about?””
Victoria reached into her coat.
Elena immediately moved.
But Victoria only pulled out a folder.
She placed it on the table.
“Read.””
I didn’t move.
Daniel opened it.
His expression changed.
“What is it?””
He turned the pages.
Then looked at me.
“Vivienne…”
“What?””
He handed it over.
I read.
And my entire world stopped.
A legal document.
Signed years ago.
A partnership agreement between Hayes Global and Sterling Corporation.
But not just any agreement.
A succession agreement.
My father had created a clause.
If Sterling Corporation entered a state of collapse, control would transfer.
To me.
I stared.
“No.””
Victoria watched me.
“Your father didn’t just invest in Sterling.””
She smiled.
“He built a safety net.””
Daniel looked shocked.
“He planned for this.””
“Yes.””
Victoria nodded.
“He knew one day Sterling would destroy itself.””
I looked at the document.
My father had known.
He had known the family I married into was unstable.
He had known I would eventually be caught in their war.
But why?
Why let me walk into it?
“Why didn’t he tell me?””
Victoria’s expression softened slightly.
“Because he wanted you to choose Daniel without knowing his family’s weakness.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
“Your father believed if you knew the truth, you would never know whether Daniel loved you or your power.””
The words hurt.
Because they were exactly what I had feared.
Victoria continued.
“And he was right to worry.””
Daniel flinched.
But he didn’t argue.
Because he knew.
The question had existed between us.
Would our relationship survive if I wasn’t just Vivienne?
If I was the woman who could control his family’s future?
I looked at Daniel.
He stepped closer.
“Vivienne.””
I waited.
“I don’t care.””
Simple.
No dramatic speech.
No promises.
Just honesty.
“I should have cared sooner about who you were inside.””
He looked at me.
“But I know who you are now.””
My eyes burned.
Then Victoria interrupted.
“Beautiful.””
Her voice was cold.
“But irrelevant.””
Everyone turned.
She smiled.
“Because while you’re all fighting over Sterling, you’re missing the real problem.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
She opened another folder.
Inside were photographs.
Emails.
Documents.
Daniel looked through them.
Then his face changed.
“What is this?””
Victoria answered:
“The person who has been moving against all of you.””
I took the papers.
The name appeared.
A name I knew.
A name that made no sense.
Because it belonged to someone who had been helping me.
Someone who had guided the investigation.
Someone who had always claimed to protect my family.
My hands shook.
“No.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Who is it?””
I couldn’t speak.
Victoria smiled.
“Your father’s most trusted advisor.””
The room went silent.
Because there was only one person who fit that description.
One person who had access to everything.
One person who knew every secret.
My father’s right hand.
The person who raised me after my father died.
The person I called family.
And the person I had never once suspected.
Victoria whispered:
“The architect was never inside Sterling.””
A pause.
“He was inside Hayes.””
I stared at the documents.
And finally understood.
The wedding humiliation.
The missing ring.
The stolen money.
The lies.
None of it was the beginning.
It was a distraction.
The real war had always been waiting for me to discover who was standing behind me.
And now I knew.
May you like
The person I trusted most…
was the person who wanted everything I had.
