Chapter 9: The Family Member Who Was Never On My Side
Tara didn’t touch the documents.
She just stared at them.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
The confident woman who had ordered me upstairs the night before was gone.
The woman standing in front of me now looked nervous.
Almost trapped.
“What is this?”” she asked.
Marcus leaned against the table.
“You tell us.””
Her eyes moved between us.
That was when she realized.
We knew.
Not everything.
But enough.
“I don’t understand.””
I almost admired how quickly she switched back into innocence.
Almost.
“You understand perfectly,” I said.
She looked at me.
“Maya, I don’t know what you think you found—”
“Stop.””
My voice surprised her.
I had spent months trying to be polite.
Trying to avoid conflict.
Trying to make his family like me.
I was done.
“You don’t get to pretend anymore.””
Her expression hardened.
“Excuse me?””
“You heard me.””
I placed the video on the table.
“Explain this.””
She looked at the screen.
Her face changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
“You recorded me?””
“No.””
Marcus answered.
“You were already recorded.””
She looked at him.
And I saw something.
Hurt.
Not because she was exposed.
Because Marcus was questioning her.
“You believe her?””
That sentence was so familiar.
Everyone who manipulates people eventually asks the same question.
“After everything I’ve done for you, you believe her?””
Marcus stared at her.
“I don’t know what to believe anymore.””
Her eyes filled with anger.
“You’re seriously choosing her?””
I almost laughed.
Choosing.
Like this was a competition.
Like I had stolen him.
Like she had never been the one attacking our marriage.
“You made this a choice,” I said.
She turned toward me.
“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””
“No?””
I held up the documents.
“Then explain the house.””
Silence.
That was her mistake.
A normal person would have asked:
“What about the house?””
But Tara didn’t.
She knew exactly what I meant.
Marcus noticed too.
His face fell.
“You knew.””
Tara looked at him.
“Marcus…”
“You knew about the house.””
She looked away.
And that was the answer.
He stepped back.
“My sister knew.””
I watched the realization hurt him.
Because betrayal from family cuts differently.
You expect strangers to hurt you.
You don’t expect the people you protect to be the ones holding the knife.
“Tara,” he whispered.
“How could you?””
Her expression changed.
The guilt disappeared.
And anger replaced it.
“Because nobody ever helps me.””
Marcus stared.
“What?””
“I spent my whole life watching you get everything.””
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“You had a family who loved you.””
She looked at me.
“You wouldn’t understand.””
“No.””
I nodded.
“I don’t understand destroying someone else’s life because you’re unhappy with yours.””
She ignored me.
“You always had the perfect life.””
I almost smiled.
“Perfect?””
I looked around.
“Is that what you thought?””
Tara said nothing.
Because she only knew what we showed the world.
She didn’t know the nights Marcus and I struggled.
The sacrifices.
The arguments.
The things we survived together.
She only saw what she wanted.
Something she could take.
Marcus looked at her.
“Did you send those messages?””
She didn’t answer.
“Tara.””
Finally, she whispered:
“Yes.””
My chest tightened.
“Why?””
She looked at me.
“Because I needed you gone.””
The honesty shocked even Marcus.
“Gone?””
“Yes.””
She stepped forward.
“You changed everything.””
I stared at her.
“How?””
“You made Marcus different.””
I shook my head.
“No. Marcus changed because he chose to.””
That made her angry.
“You think you’re innocent?””
I frowned.
“What?””
She laughed.
“You don’t know everything.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What does that mean?””
Tara looked at Marcus.
Then at me.
“You think I’m the only person who lied?””
The room went silent.
I looked at Marcus.
His face changed.
“What are you talking about?””
Tara smiled slightly.
And I hated that smile.
Because it meant she had one more secret.
“One day,” she said quietly, “Maya will find out why you really stopped trusting her.””
Marcus froze.
My heart started pounding.
“What?””
Tara grabbed her purse.
“I’m done talking.””
“No.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“You’re not leaving.””
She looked at him.
“You don’t want the truth.””
I stared at Marcus.
“What truth?””
Nobody answered.
And suddenly, I felt that familiar fear again.
The fear that there was another layer.
Another secret.
Another piece of my life happening without me.
Tara walked toward the door.
Before leaving, she turned back.
“Maya.””
I looked at her.
“Ask your husband what happened the night he came home at 3 a.m.””
My blood went cold.
Marcus looked away.
And in that moment…
I knew.
There was another betrayal.
May you like
And this time…
It was his.
