Chapter 11: The Family Meeting That Exposed Everything
The next morning, Marcus called his family.
Not to apologize.
Not to explain.
To confront them.
And that alone showed me something had changed.
For years, Marcus had protected them.
Made excuses for them.
Ignored the damage they caused because they were family.
But now, he finally understood something.
Family didn’t mean someone was allowed to destroy your life.
We met at his mother’s house.
The same place where I had spent countless holidays pretending everything was fine.
The same place where Diane always smiled politely while making comments that cut deeper than she realized.
When we arrived, Tara was already there.
She looked confident.
Almost relieved.
Like she believed she could control this conversation too.
Diane looked at me.
“Maya.””
Her tone was cold.
I ignored it.
Marcus walked in first.
“I need answers.””
Tara rolled her eyes.
“About what?””
He placed the documents on the table.
“These.””
Her expression changed.
Only slightly.
But we noticed.
Diane picked them up.
“What is this?””
Marcus looked at his mother.
“A property transfer.””
She frowned.
“I don’t know anything about that.””
“Really?””
His voice was different.
Stronger.
“Tara does.””
Everyone looked at her.
She immediately became defensive.
“Don’t look at me like that.””
Marcus stared.
“Did you create this?””
“No.””
“Did you ask someone to create it?””
“No.””
“Did you use my signature?””
Her silence was answer enough.
Diane looked shocked.
“Tara?””
“You don’t understand.””
“No,” Marcus said.
“I don’t.””
She looked at him.
“You never understand.””
I watched her carefully.
Because this wasn’t someone caught in a mistake.
This was someone angry that her plan failed.
“You think I’m the villain,” Tara said.
Marcus looked exhausted.
“You forged my signature.””
“And why did I have to?””
The room went quiet.
“Because nobody listens to me!””
I almost couldn’t believe it.
Tara pointed at Marcus.
“You always had everything.””
Then she looked at me.
“And then you came along and took him away.””
I shook my head.
“I didn’t take anyone.””
“You changed him.””
“No.””
I stepped forward.
“You expected him to choose you over his wife forever.””
Her face hardened.
“And you expected him to abandon his family.””
I looked at Marcus.
“Did I?””
He shook his head.
“No.””
That was the first time he defended me without hesitation.
Tara noticed.
And it hurt her.
“You’re really choosing her?””
Marcus stared at her.
“I’m choosing the truth.””
The words silenced everyone.
Diane sat down.
She looked older suddenly.
Tired.
“How long has this been happening?””
Tara looked away.
Diane turned toward her.
“How long?””
Finally, Tara whispered:
“Months.””
I watched Diane process it.
All this time, she thought she was protecting her daughter.
But she had helped destroy her son’s marriage.
“You lied to us,” Diane whispered.
Tara laughed bitterly.
“Everyone lies.””
Her eyes moved toward me.
“Maya knows that better than anyone.””
I felt my body tense.
“What does that mean?””
She smiled.
And I hated that smile.
“You still haven’t told Marcus everything either.””
Marcus looked at me.
I froze.
“What?””
Tara continued.
“Ask her about Daniel.””
My heart stopped.
Not again.
The same name.
The same accusation.
Marcus looked confused.
“What about Daniel?””
I looked at Tara.
“You’re still doing this?””
“Doing what?””
“Trying to distract everyone.””
She smiled.
“I’m not.””
Marcus looked between us.
“Maya?””
I turned to him.
“I already explained Daniel.””
“Yes.””
“But apparently not everything.””
My stomach dropped.
Because I knew what she was doing.
She was throwing another secret into the room.
Another question.
Another reason for doubt.
Marcus looked at me.
“What does she mean?””
I took a breath.
And before I could answer, Tara spoke.
“She wasn’t cheating.””
Everyone looked at her.
I frowned.
“What?””
Tara smiled.
“But she knows why Daniel contacted her.””
I stared.
“What are you talking about?””
She leaned back.
“He contacted her because of something Marcus did.””
The room went silent.
I looked at Marcus.
His face changed.

And once again…
I realized there was a part of the story I had never heard.
