Chapter 6: The Accusation That Turned My World Upside Down

For a moment, I couldn’t speak.

The house was silent.

Completely silent.

I stared at Marcus, waiting for him to laugh.

Waiting for him to say he was joking.

But he didn’t.

He just stood there.

Watching my reaction.

“You think I betrayed you?””

“No.””

“Then who does?””

He looked away.

“My family.””

I felt anger rise inside me.

“Your family thinks I betrayed you?””

“Yes.””

“And you let them?””

His silence was painful.

“Marcus.””

He finally looked at me.

“I didn’t know what to believe.””

Those words hit harder than I expected.

Because doubt was something I could never fight.

You can defend yourself against an accusation.

But how do you defend yourself against someone who has already decided you might be guilty?

“What did they accuse me of?””

He hesitated.

Then reached for another folder on the counter.

My heart sank.

Another folder.

Another secret.

Another thing everyone knew except me.

He handed it to me.

“I wanted to show you before.””

I looked at him.

“But you didn’t.””

“No.””

“Because you were afraid.””

“Yes.””

I opened the folder.

Inside were printed messages.

Emails.

Photos.

My eyes moved across the pages.

And then I saw it.

My name.

My stomach dropped.

“These are my messages.””

Marcus nodded.

“I know.””

I looked closer.

They were screenshots from conversations.

Some were with coworkers.

Some were with old friends.

Normal conversations.

Nothing secret.

Nothing wrong.

Then I saw one name.

A man I hadn’t spoken to in years.

“Daniel?””

Marcus watched me.

“You know him?””

I looked up.

“Of course I know him.””

Daniel was an old college friend.

Nothing more.

Someone who occasionally liked my social media posts.

Someone I hadn’t seen in almost five years.

“Why are you showing me this?””

Marcus pointed at the screenshots.

“My family thinks something happened between you two.””

I stared at him.

Then I laughed.

A real laugh this time.

Because the accusation was so unbelievable.

“You’re serious.””

“Yes.””

“You think I cheated on you because an old friend sent me a message?””

“No.””

“But your family does.””

He looked uncomfortable.

I looked through the papers again.

Then I noticed something.

The screenshots were edited.

Not obviously.

But enough.

The timestamps were missing.

Some messages were cut off.

Parts of conversations were removed.

I looked at Marcus.

“Where did you get these?””

He didn’t answer.

“Marcus.””

“My sister.””

Of course.

I closed my eyes.

“Tara.””

“Yes.””

I placed the papers down.

“Your sister went through my private messages?””

“She said she found them.””

“She found them?””

I stared at him.

“No.””

My voice became quiet.

“She searched for them.””

He didn’t argue.

And that told me everything.

I suddenly remembered months earlier.

The time Tara stayed with us after her apartment flooded.

The time she borrowed my laptop.

The time she asked for my password because she “needed to print something.””

My blood ran cold.

“She had access.””

Marcus looked confused.

“What?””

“Tara had access to my laptop.””

His expression changed.

I knew that moment mattered.

Because maybe he had never considered it.

Maybe he had only listened to the story she told him.

“She could have taken anything.””

“Maya…”

“No.””

I looked at him.

“Your family accused me of betrayal using information they stole.””

He sat there silently.

And suddenly I understood something.

They didn’t just misunderstand me.

They built a case against me.

They collected pieces of my life and rearranged them into a story where I was the villain.

A story Marcus was willing to believe.

I walked toward the kitchen counter and looked at the birthday decorations.

The cake.

The candles.

The gifts.

Everything suddenly felt like a performance.

“How long have you believed this?””

Marcus’s voice was barely audible.

“Since August.””

I froze.

August.

Months.

He had carried this suspicion for months.

He had slept beside me.

Had dinner with me.

Had kissed me goodbye in the morning.

All while wondering if I had betrayed him.

“And you never asked me?””

“I was going to.””

“When?””

He had no answer.

I nodded.

“Exactly.””

The room felt colder.

Then my phone buzzed.

I looked down.

Unknown number.

Normally, I would have ignored it.

But something made me answer.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice spoke.

“Maya?””

“Yes?””

“This is Laura.””

I frowned.

“Laura who?””

There was a pause.

Then she said:

“Laura from Marcus’s office.””

My heart tightened.

“Okay.””

“I know you don’t know me well.””

Her voice sounded nervous.

“But I need to tell you something.””

I looked at Marcus.

He noticed my expression.

“What is it?””

I ignored him.

“What do you need to tell me?””

Laura lowered her voice.

“Your husband’s family has been lying to you.””

My entire body went still.

“What?””

“I wasn’t supposed to say anything.””

She took a breath.

“But I saw the documents.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“What documents?””

The answer came quietly.

“The ones that prove Marcus wasn’t protecting himself from you.””

A pause.

“He was protecting someone else.””

I felt my heartbeat stop for a second.

“Who?””

Laura hesitated.

Then whispered:

“His sister.””

I slowly looked at Marcus.

May you like

And for the first time that night…

I wondered if I had been looking at the wrong betrayal all along.
