Chapter 7: The Secret Hidden Inside The Family
I kept the phone against my ear long after Laura stopped speaking.
I couldn’t move.
I couldn’t think.
The words kept replaying.
“His sister.””
Tara.
The person who had stood in my house and told me I didn’t belong at my own husband’s birthday party.
The person who had watched me get humiliated.
The person who had spent months quietly building a story where I was the enemy.
I looked at Marcus.
He was staring at me.
“What did she say?””
I didn’t answer.
Because I didn’t know what to believe anymore.
For months, I had been trying to understand why everyone suddenly turned against me.
I thought maybe Marcus had fallen out of love.
I thought maybe his family had never accepted me.
I thought maybe I had made mistakes I couldn’t see.
But now there was another possibility.
Maybe someone had created this entire situation.
Maybe someone needed Marcus to believe I was the problem.
“Maya.””
His voice pulled me back.
“What did Laura say?””
I slowly lowered the phone.
“She said your family has been lying.””
His face changed.
“What?””
“She said the documents weren’t about protecting you from me.””
I watched him carefully.
“They were protecting Tara.””
The color drained from his face.
For a second, he looked confused.
Then afraid.
And that reaction told me everything.
“You know something,” I whispered.
“No.””
“You do.””
Marcus shook his head.
“Maya, I swear I don’t.””
But his voice wasn’t confident.
Not anymore.
I stepped closer.
“What happened, Marcus?””
He looked away.
“I don’t know.””
“Stop saying that.””
My voice became sharper.
“You knew enough to believe I betrayed you. You knew enough to create legal documents behind my back. You knew enough to let your family isolate me.””
I pointed at him.
“So don’t stand there and tell me you know nothing.””
He sat down.
For the first time that night, Marcus looked defeated.
“There was money.””
I froze.
“What?””
He rubbed his face.
“There was a problem with Tara.””
I stared at him.
“What kind of problem?””
He hesitated.
“Financial.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Of course.””
“What?””
“Of course this is about money.””
I walked around the room.
Everything suddenly connected.
The secrecy.
The paperwork.
The panic.
The way Tara always seemed to know more than she should.
“How much?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
“Marcus.””
“Almost eighty thousand dollars.””
My eyes widened.
“Eighty thousand?””
He nodded.
“Tara had debt.””
“And you paid it?””
“No.””
“Then why are you involved?””
He looked down.
“Because she asked me for help.””
I stared at him.
“And you said yes?””
“I tried to.””
That answer bothered me.
Tried to.
“What does that mean?””
Marcus was quiet.
Then:
“I transferred money from our joint account.””
My heart stopped.
“Our account?””
He nodded slowly.
“How much?””
“Forty thousand.””
I felt like I had been punched.
“You took forty thousand dollars from us?””
“I was going to replace it.””
“With what?””
Silence.
I looked at him.
“You didn’t have it.””
“No.””
“And you never told me.””
“No.””
I closed my eyes.
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
All this time, he had been accusing me.
Questioning me.
Allowing his family to judge me.
Meanwhile, he was the one hiding something.
“You know what’s unbelievable?””
He looked up.
“You weren’t afraid I betrayed you.””
I shook my head.
“You were afraid I would discover what you did.””
His silence confirmed it.
I felt tears burning in my eyes.
Not because of the money.
Because of the betrayal.
A marriage could survive financial problems.
A marriage could survive mistakes.
But it couldn’t survive one person deciding the other person didn’t deserve the truth.
“So you created a story.””
Marcus looked confused.
“What?””
“You needed a reason.””
I pointed toward the papers.
“You needed everyone to believe I was the dangerous one.””
“That’s not true.””
“Isn’t it?””
I looked at him.
“If I was the person who betrayed you, then nobody would question why you were hiding things.””
He opened his mouth.
Then closed it.
Because he knew.
I was right.
My phone buzzed again.
Another message from Laura.
I looked down.
*I can send you proof. But you need to understand something. Tara didn’t just borrow money. She used your name.*
My heart sank.
I showed Marcus.
His face changed immediately.
“What does that mean?””
I looked at him.
“I was hoping you would tell me.””
He grabbed his phone.
“I need to call my sister.””
“No.””
He stopped.
“Why?””
“Because if Tara has been manipulating this situation for months, she already knows how to control the story.””
I stared at him.
“She needs to think she still has power.””
Marcus looked at me.
For the first time that night, I saw something different in his eyes.
Not guilt.
Not fear.
Regret.
“I’m sorry.””
I almost believed him.
Almost.
But apologies were easy.
Actions were harder.
“I need the truth first.””
He nodded.
“What do you want to know?””
“Everything.””
For the next hour, Marcus told me pieces of a story I never knew existed.
Tara had been struggling financially for years.
She had borrowed money from different people.
She had lied about why she needed it.
She told everyone she was starting a business.
But according to Marcus, she had been using the money to cover old debts.
“She said she was embarrassed,” he explained.
I looked at him.
“So you protected her.””
“Yes.””
“And when protecting her became difficult?””
He looked away.
“You became suspicious of me.””
He didn’t argue.
I felt exhausted.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
Because every answer created another question.
Then my phone rang.
Laura.
I answered immediately.
“Maya?””
“Yes.””
“I sent something to your email.””
I opened it.
There was one attachment.
A bank document.
I clicked it.
And within seconds, my entire body went cold.
The document showed a transfer.
A large transfer.
From an account connected to Tara.
To a company account.
And the date was the same week Marcus created the legal paperwork.
I looked at Marcus.
“This isn’t about debt.””
He frowned.
“What?””
I turned the screen toward him.
“Tara wasn’t trying to survive.””
I swallowed.
“She was hiding something.””
Marcus stared at the document.
Then whispered:
“She lied to me.””
May you like
And for the first time…
He looked as betrayed as I felt.
