Chapter 12: The Truth About Daniel
Nobody spoke.
Not even Tara.
She simply watched us.
She knew exactly what she was doing.
She had spent months creating chaos through secrets.
And now she was using the last secret she had.
The one involving Daniel.
I looked at Marcus.
“What did you do?””
His face turned pale.
“Maya…”
“No.””
My voice was quiet.
“But this time, you are going to tell me.””
He looked at the floor.
And that was when I knew.
There was something.
Something real.
Something he had hidden.
Marcus sat down.
“I didn’t tell you because I was ashamed.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“Of what?””
He took a breath.
“Daniel contacted you because of me.””
I waited.
“Why?””
He rubbed his forehead.
“Because years ago, before I met you, Daniel and I worked together.””
I frowned.
“Okay.””
“We had a business disagreement.””
“That has nothing to do with me.””
“It does now.””
He looked at me.
“Because I handled it badly.””
I listened.
“I made a mistake that affected him financially.””
I stared.
“What kind of mistake?””
He hesitated.
“I blamed him for something I had done.””
The room went silent.
I couldn’t believe it.
“You ruined his reputation?””
“Yes.””
“And he contacted me?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Marcus swallowed.
“He wanted me to admit the truth.””
I looked at him.
“And you didn’t?””
“No.””
“Why?””
His answer was barely a whisper.
“Because I was afraid.””
Again.
Fear.
The thing that had controlled every bad decision he made.
I shook my head.
“You spent years protecting yourself.””
He nodded.
“Yes.””
“And then you judged me for supposedly doing the same thing.””
His eyes filled with regret.
“I know.””
I looked at Tara.
“So you knew about this?””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
“How?””
“I found the messages.””
I stared.
“Of course you did.””
She ignored my anger.
“I knew Daniel was trying to expose Marcus.””
“And you used that against me.””
“Yes.””
The honesty was shocking.
“But why?””
Tara looked at Marcus.
“Because I knew he would believe the worst.””
That sentence hurt because it was true.
Marcus closed his eyes.
He knew it too.
The room became quiet.
Then Diane spoke.
“I don’t understand.””
She looked at her children.
“How did our family become this?””
Nobody answered.
Because maybe nobody knew.
Maybe it happened slowly.
One secret.
One excuse.
One lie at a time.
I stood there looking at Marcus.
The man I loved.
The man who had hurt me.
The man who was finally telling the truth.
And I realized something painful.
The biggest problem in our marriage wasn’t that Marcus made mistakes.
Everyone made mistakes.
The problem was that he kept choosing silence.
He kept choosing protection.
He kept choosing everyone else before me.
“I need time.””
Marcus looked up.
“Maya.””
“I mean it.””
I stepped back.
“I need time to decide if I can trust you again.””
He nodded.
“I understand.””
For once, he didn’t argue.
He didn’t defend himself.
He accepted it.
And somehow, that made it harder.
Because a part of me still loved him.
But love wasn’t enough anymore.
As we left Diane’s house, my phone buzzed.
Another message.
From an unknown number.
I opened it.
One sentence.
My heart stopped.
*You think Tara is the only person who betrayed you. Ask Marcus where he was the night you lost your baby.*
I froze.
The world seemed to stop.
Because there was one thing nobody knew.
One thing Marcus and I never talked about.
The loss we both carried.
The pain we buried.

And now someone was telling me…
There was another secret behind it.
