Chapter 13: The Secret That Broke The Last Piece Of Trust
I stared at the message until the screen went dark.
Then I turned it back on.
I read it again.
And again.
*You think Tara is the only person who betrayed you. Ask Marcus where he was the night you lost your baby.*
My hands started shaking.
Not because I didn’t know what night they meant.
I knew.
There are moments in life that never leave you.
Moments that become permanent marks on your heart.
For us, it was that night.
The night we lost our first child.
The night we went from being a couple dreaming about the future to two broken people trying to survive the present.
I had spent years believing we went through that pain together.
But now, after everything I had discovered…
I wasn’t sure anymore.
I looked at Marcus.
He was walking toward the car, unaware of the message on my phone.
Unaware that another secret had just opened.
Another door.
Another wound.
I followed him slowly.
The entire drive home was silent.
Not peaceful silence.
The kind of silence where two people are sitting beside each other but feel miles apart.
Marcus glanced at me several times.
“Maya?””
I looked out the window.
“What?””
“You’ve been quiet.””
I almost smiled.
After everything that happened, he noticed my silence?
“I got another message.””
His hands tightened around the steering wheel.
“From who?””
“Someone who knows about that night.””
The car became completely still.
Even though we were moving.
Even though the road was filled with noise.
Everything between us stopped.
His face changed.
“Maya…”
“Where were you?””
He didn’t answer.
That was the answer.
I turned toward him.
“Where were you that night?””
He pulled the car over.
For a moment, he just sat there.
Then he whispered:
“I knew this would come out eventually.””
My heart dropped.
“You knew?””
He closed his eyes.
“I was hoping I could explain it.””
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“You were hoping I would never know.””
He looked at me.
And I saw regret.
But regret wasn’t enough anymore.
Not after all the secrets.
“Tell me.””
He took a deep breath.
“The night we lost the baby…”
His voice broke.
“I wasn’t at the hospital when you first called.””
I froze.
“What?””
“I was on my way.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You told me you were stuck in traffic.””
“I was.””
“Then why did you say you were already leaving?””
He looked down.
Because there it was.
Another lie.
“I was somewhere else first.””
My chest tightened.
“Where?””
He didn’t answer.
I felt tears forming.
“Marcus.””
“I was with Tara.””
I stared at him.
The world felt unreal.
“Tara?””
He nodded.
“She called me.””
“Why?””
“She was having a crisis.””
I laughed softly.
A broken laugh.
“Of course she was.””
“Maya—”
“No.””
I wiped my face.
“No, I need to understand.””
I looked at him.
“My husband wasn’t with me when I was losing our child because your sister needed you?””
His eyes filled with pain.
“I didn’t know how serious it was.””
I stared.
“I called you.””
“Yes.””
“I told you something was wrong.””
“I know.””
“I was scared.””
“I know.””
“Then why didn’t you come immediately?””
He looked away.
And that was the moment something inside me broke.
Because I didn’t need a perfect husband.
I didn’t need him to know exactly what to do.
I needed him to choose me.
“I thought I was losing my baby alone.””
His eyes filled with tears.
“Maya…”
“And I was.””
The words were quiet.
But they destroyed him.
“I was sitting there waiting for you.””
I shook my head.
“And you were helping someone else.””
“I thought I could handle both.””
“You couldn’t.””
“No.””
He whispered.
“I couldn’t.””
For a while, neither of us spoke.
Then he continued.
“Tara told me she had hurt herself.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“She said she couldn’t breathe. She said she was going to do something stupid.””
I looked away.
Even now, part of me understood why he went.
That was the worst part.
Marcus wasn’t heartless.
He was just always controlled by guilt.
By responsibility.
By fear.
Everyone knew how to pull him.
“And then?””
“I stayed too long.””
He swallowed.
“When I checked my phone again, you had already been taken to the hospital.””
My eyes filled.
“You didn’t tell me.””
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because I was ashamed.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“You weren’t ashamed.””
I touched my chest.
“You were afraid I would see you differently.””
He looked down.
And I knew I was right.
He wasn’t protecting me.
He was protecting himself.
“I spent years believing we shared that pain.””
My voice broke.
“But I was grieving beside someone who wasn’t even there.””
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at him.
“I know.””
He wiped his eyes.
“I know sorry isn’t enough.””
“No.””
I looked out the window.
“It isn’t.””
When we arrived home, I didn’t go inside immediately.
I stood outside our house.
The place that had held our happiest memories.
The place where we laughed.
Where we planned.
Where we thought we were safe.
Now every room seemed full of secrets.
That night, I packed a bag.
Marcus watched from the doorway.
“Are you leaving?””
I nodded.
“I need space.””
His face fell.
“Is there anything I can do?””
I looked at him.
And honestly?
I didn’t know.
Because the woman who married Marcus believed she knew everything about him.
Now I knew I only knew the version he allowed me to see.
“I don’t know.””
I picked up my bag.
“But I know I can’t heal in the same place where I was lied to.””
Before I left, my phone buzzed again.
Another message.
This time, there was a photo.
A photo of Tara.
And someone else.
Someone I recognized.
My heart stopped.
May you like
Because the person standing beside Tara was the one person who had been defending Marcus from the beginning.
Diane.
