Chapter 8: The Evidence They Never Wanted Me To See
The next morning, I woke up feeling like I had lived someone else’s life.
The house was quiet.
Too quiet.
The birthday decorations were still hanging.
The leftover food was still in the refrigerator.
The evidence of the night before was everywhere.
But the worst part wasn’t the mess.
It was knowing that my marriage had been breaking apart while everyone else watched.
Marcus slept on the couch.
I didn’t wake him.
I wasn’t ready to talk.
Not because I hated him.
That would have been easier.
I didn’t hate Marcus.
I loved the person I thought he was.
That was the problem.
I walked into the kitchen and made coffee.
My hands moved automatically.
A routine from a life that no longer felt real.
Then I opened my laptop.
Laura had sent more files.
Three documents.
A series of emails.
And one video.
I stared at the screen.
I didn’t want to watch it.
But I knew I had to.
I clicked.
The video opened.
It was from a security camera.
A parking lot.
At first, nothing happened.
Then I saw Tara.
My breath caught.
She was standing next to a man I didn’t recognize.
They were talking.
Then Tara handed him an envelope.
The timestamp showed the same month everything changed in my marriage.
I turned up the volume.
The audio was unclear.
But I heard enough.
“Marcus can’t know.””
That was Tara’s voice.
My heart started racing.
The man replied.
“What about Maya?””
Tara laughed.
“She won’t understand what’s happening.””
I froze.
The video continued.
“We just need Marcus focused on the marriage problems.””
My blood ran cold.
I stopped the video.
I couldn’t watch anymore.
Not because I didn’t believe it.
Because I did.
Marcus walked into the kitchen.
He looked exhausted.
“What did you find?””
I turned the laptop toward him.
He watched the video.
His face changed.
“No.””
I didn’t say anything.
“No.””
He stood frozen.
“That’s impossible.””
I looked at him.
“Is it?””
He didn’t answer.
He watched again.
Then again.
Like somehow the truth would change.
Finally, he sat down.
“My sister…”
His voice broke.
“I trusted her.””
I understood that feeling.
Because I had trusted him.
And he had broken that trust.
“What was she doing?””
Marcus shook his head.
“I don’t know.””
I looked at the documents.
“I think we’re about to find out.””
The emails showed Tara had been communicating with someone at a company.
A company Marcus had invested in.
A company that had recently failed.
My eyes narrowed.
“Marcus.””
He looked.
“That company.””
His face changed.
“You know it?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
He stared at the screen.
“Because that was where the money went.””
My stomach tightened.
“The forty thousand?””
He nodded.
“Tara said she needed it for debt.””
I looked at the documents.
“She invested it.””
Marcus leaned back.
He looked devastated.
“She lied.””
“Yes.””
“But why involve you?””
That was the question.
The biggest one.
Why destroy my marriage?
Why make me look guilty?
Why create this chaos?
Then I noticed something.
An email.
From Tara.
The subject line made my entire body freeze.
*Plan B.*
I clicked.
The message was short.
But it was enough.
“If Marcus separates from Maya, the house becomes easier to access. She won’t fight if everyone believes she caused the problem.””
I stared at the screen.
My hands went cold.
The house.
This was never about protecting Marcus.
It was about controlling the house.
I looked at him.
“Marcus.””
He read the email.
And his face completely changed.
Because now he understood.
Tara wasn’t trying to save him.
She was using him.
Using both of us.
“My sister wanted the house.””
I nodded.
“And she needed you to believe I was the reason your marriage failed.””
Marcus stood suddenly.
“I’m calling her.””
I grabbed his arm.
“Wait.””
He looked at me.
“What?””
“She doesn’t know we know.””
He became quiet.
I continued.
“For months, she controlled the story because she always had the advantage.””
I looked at the evidence.
“Now we do.””
Marcus stared at me.
The old Marcus would have acted immediately.
The man who wanted to fix everything.
The man who believed his family always had good intentions.
But this time, he stopped.
He listened.
And somehow that hurt too.
Because I realized how much damage it took before he finally trusted me.
Later that afternoon, Tara arrived at our house.
She walked in confidently.
Like she owned the place.
Like nothing had happened.
“Maya.””
Her smile was fake.
“I heard last night got emotional.””
I stared at her.
“You could say that.””
She looked at Marcus.
“Are you okay?””
He nodded.
“I’m fine.””
She studied him.
Something about her expression changed.
She sensed something.
“What’s going on?””
I smiled.
A calm smile.
The kind people wear when they know something others don’t.
“We were hoping you could tell us.””
Her face froze.
“What?””
Marcus placed the documents on the table.
Tara looked down.
May you like
And for the first time…
She looked scared.
