Chapter 8: The Blue Box

The following morning, my doctor finally cleared me to leave the hospital with instructions to rest and avoid unnecessary stress.

Eleanor insisted I stay at her house.

I agreed, but only after Andrea arranged a supervised visit to the Westlake property.

At ten thirty, a black SUV pulled into the driveway.

Andrea sat beside me, reviewing the documents on her tablet.

Eleanor followed in another vehicle with a security officer.

The house looked even larger in person.

Its white stone exterior, enormous windows, and perfectly landscaped garden made it look like something from a luxury magazine.

But when I stepped through the front door, I felt sick.

The entryway was decorated with fresh flowers.

A pair of Vivian's designer heels sat beside the staircase.

There were two wine glasses on the kitchen island.

And on the wall hung a large photograph of Marcus and Vivian standing together at a private event.

I looked away.

Andrea approached the security officer.

"Let's document every room we enter.""

We started downstairs.

The living room contained expensive furniture, a marble fireplace, and several unopened packages.

Then I saw something that stopped me.

A framed photograph of Marcus holding a newborn baby.

I stepped closer.

The photograph wasn't real.

It was a professionally printed image using a stock photograph of a baby, but Marcus's face had been edited into the background beside it.

Across the bottom were the words:

Our New Beginning.

I felt my throat tighten.

"Why would someone make this?""

Andrea examined it.

"It looks like a personal display, but we'll photograph it.""

We continued down the hallway.

The nursery door was slightly open.

I pushed it gently.

There it was.

The white crib.

The pink walls.

The rocking chair.

The wooden letters spelling AMELIA.

I walked toward the crib, my eyes filling with tears.

On the dresser sat a small stuffed rabbit.

I recognized it.

It was the same rabbit I had purchased during my first trimester.

I had left it on our bedroom dresser after Marcus said he wanted to keep the nursery items organized until the renovation was finished.

He had taken it here.

I picked it up.

A small paper tag was attached to its ear.

For Amelia. Daddy's little princess.

I pressed the rabbit against my chest.

"How could he do this?""

Andrea stood quietly behind me.

"I don't know.""

Then the security officer called from the hallway.

"We found a storage room.""

I wiped my face and followed him.

The room was behind a locked door near the garage.

Andrea examined the lock.

"Do you have authorization to access this area?""

The officer checked the property documentation.

"Yes. The owner has granted supervised access.""

He opened it.

Inside were filing cabinets, several boxes, and a metal shelf filled with documents.

At the bottom sat a blue storage box.

My heart started racing.

"The message," I whispered.

"It said to look for the blue box.""

Andrea photographed the box before opening it.

Inside were folders arranged by date.

The first contained property records.

The second contained company correspondence.

The third contained medical documents.

I felt my stomach tighten.

Andrea opened the medical folder.

There were copies of the private laboratory request, the forged consent form, and several pages of correspondence between Marcus and Vivian.

Then she found a printed email.

The subject line read:

AMELIA — FUTURE ARRANGEMENTS.

I leaned closer.

Marcus had written the email three months earlier.

The trust provision gives us a limited window. If Claire signs the amendment before the child arrives, we can establish the new structure without triggering the guardianship restrictions.

Vivian's reply appeared below.

And if she refuses?

Marcus answered:

Then we'll have to make the situation look different. The paternity question may help. Mother won't interfere if she believes Claire has been dishonest.

I covered my mouth.

Andrea continued reading.

The next email was even worse.

Vivian, the property is ready. The nursery is complete. Once the divorce is finalized, I can move forward without Claire controlling the arrangements.

Vivian had responded:

I don't want to raise someone else's child while she's still around.

Marcus's answer made my blood run cold.

She won't have the same authority once the trust is restructured.

I stepped backward.

"He's planning to take Amelia.""

Andrea looked at me.

"These documents suggest he has been trying to establish financial and legal control over arrangements involving the child. We need to have everything reviewed immediately.""

I couldn't stop shaking.

There was another envelope at the bottom of the box.

It contained a handwritten note.

The handwriting was familiar.

My father's.

I recognized it immediately.

My father had died four years before I met Marcus.

I opened the envelope with trembling fingers.

Inside was a copy of a letter addressed to Richard Hale.

Richard,

I know you want the best for your family, and I respect the protections you've created. But I want you to understand something about my daughter.

Claire has spent her entire life believing that love means giving people another chance. Please make sure nobody mistakes her kindness for permission to take advantage of her.

I stopped reading.

Tears blurred the page.

My father had known Richard.

They had apparently exchanged letters before I ever married Marcus.

At the bottom was a handwritten sentence.

If Marcus ever uses Claire's inheritance against her, the original agreement must be activated.

Andrea took the letter carefully.

"There's a reference to an original agreement.""

I looked at her.

"What agreement?""

She searched through the remaining papers.

Behind a folder marked PROPERTY TAXES, she found a sealed envelope.

The front read:

To be opened only if Claire Hale's inheritance is misappropriated.

My hands went cold.

Andrea carefully opened it.

Inside was a notarized agreement signed by Richard Hale, my father, and Eleanor.

It established that the money I had contributed to Marcus's business was never intended to become unrestricted company property.

Instead, it was supposed to be held under a separate protective arrangement for my benefit and the benefit of any child I carried.

I stared at the document.

"My father made this?""

Andrea nodded.

"Apparently, he and Richard anticipated the possibility that your financial contribution might later be disputed.""

I couldn't believe it.

My father had been protecting me even after his death.

But the document contained one final page.

A handwritten amendment.

Andrea read it silently.

Then she looked up.

"Claire, this is important.""

"What?""

"The agreement names someone who has the authority to activate the protective provisions.""

"Who?""

Andrea turned the page toward me.

The name was Eleanor Hale.

Before we could discuss it, footsteps sounded behind us.

The security officer turned.

A woman's voice came from the doorway.

"Well, this is quite a surprise.""

Vivian.

She stood there wearing a white silk blouse and black trousers.

Her eyes moved from me to the open blue box.

May you like

Then she smiled.

"You weren't supposed to find that.""
