Chapter 10: The Secret Our Fathers Buried

I stared at the envelope in Marcus's hand.

My father's handwriting was unmistakable. The same handwriting that had appeared on birthday cards, school notes, and the letters he used to leave beside my breakfast when I was growing up.

But four words on that envelope made my stomach turn.

Claire Must Never Know.

"Where did you get that?"" I asked.

Marcus looked toward Vivian before answering.

"It was in the original trust records.""

"Give it to me.""

"Not until you understand what it means.""

Andrea stepped forward.

"Mr. Hale, hand over the envelope. Any documents concerning Claire's inheritance must be reviewed by legal counsel.""

Marcus ignored her.

"Claire, your father and mine made an agreement years before you and I met.""

I felt my throat tighten.

"What agreement?""

"An agreement concerning the family trust.""

Eleanor appeared in the doorway behind him.

"Marcus, put that envelope down.""

He turned.

"Mother, you knew?""

Eleanor's expression changed.

"Where did you find it?""

"In the original records.""

She closed her eyes.

For the first time since I had known her, Eleanor looked genuinely afraid.

I turned toward her.

"You knew about this too?""

She walked into the storage room.

"Claire, there's something I should have told you a long time ago.""

I shook my head.

"Please don't tell me you've been hiding something else.""

"Not from you intentionally.""

"Then tell me.""

Eleanor looked at Marcus.

"Your father and Richard were partners before either of them became successful. They built their first business together.""

I frowned.

"My father never owned a construction company.""

"He didn't. But he helped Richard establish one.""

Marcus interrupted.

"And they made an agreement that the first grandchild born into either family would receive a controlling interest in certain trust assets.""

I stared at him.

"First grandchild?""

Eleanor nodded.

"Yes.""

I looked down at my stomach.

"Amelia?""

"Yes.""

Marcus laughed bitterly.

"That's why this entire situation became complicated.""

Andrea opened the trust document.

"Mr. Hale, explain what you believe that provision means.""

Marcus pulled the envelope closer to his chest.

"It means Amelia could become the primary beneficiary of the protected family assets. Not me. Not my future wife. The child.""

I looked at Eleanor.

"Is that true?""

She nodded.

"Your father and Richard wanted to ensure that the next generation would have security independent of the decisions made by the adults.""

"Then why was I never told?""

Eleanor looked at the floor.

"Because Richard believed the arrangement would remain dormant until the child was born. He didn't want money influencing your marriage.""

I felt tears gathering in my eyes.

"And Marcus knew?""

"He discovered the provision shortly after your pregnancy was confirmed.""

I turned toward my husband.

"That's why you changed.""

Marcus didn't answer.

I remembered his sudden interest in my medical appointments, his questions about the due date, and the strange documents he had brought home.

It hadn't been paranoia.

He had been calculating how to control something that was never supposed to belong to him.

"Open the envelope," I demanded.

Marcus hesitated.

Andrea held out her hand.

"Give it to me.""

For a moment, I thought he would refuse.

Then Eleanor spoke.

"Marcus, your father would be ashamed of what you've done.""

His face hardened.

He handed the envelope to Andrea.

She opened it carefully.

Inside was a letter from my father dated six months before his death.

Andrea read silently before looking at me.

"Claire, this letter is addressed to you.""

I took it.

My hands trembled as I unfolded the paper.

My darling Claire,

If you're reading this, something has happened that Richard and I hoped would never become necessary.

There is a reason I insisted that you keep your inheritance separate, even after you married. It was never because I distrusted your future husband. It was because I understood how easily love can become tangled with money.

I swallowed.

Richard and I established a protected family arrangement. Your contribution to Marcus's business was never meant to become an unrestricted gift. It was recorded as a protected investment, and your future child was included in the agreement.

There is one more thing you deserve to know.

My eyes moved down the page.

When I first met Richard, he was not simply a business partner. He was the man who helped me rebuild my life after I lost everything. We made a promise that our children would never be forced to fight over what we built.

If Marcus ever tries to use your inheritance or your child as leverage, activate the original agreement. Eleanor knows what to do.

I stopped reading.

There was a final paragraph.

Never allow anyone to convince you that being a mother means surrendering your rights.

I pressed the letter against my chest.

My father had known.

He had somehow anticipated the possibility that the man I loved might one day try to use my child against me.

"Why didn't you tell me?"" I whispered.

Eleanor's eyes filled.

"Your father asked me to protect you without making you afraid of the family. I promised him I would.""

Marcus laughed.

"That's convenient.""

Eleanor turned toward him.

"You have no idea what convenient means. Your father gave you every opportunity to become a decent man.""

"Don't lecture me.""

"I watched you use your pregnant wife to obtain signatures on documents she didn't understand. I watched you redirect company money. And today I learned you were planning to challenge her parental rights.""

Marcus stepped closer.

"You're making me sound like a criminal.""

Andrea closed the folder.

"Your conduct is being investigated. You should stop making statements without your attorney present.""

Marcus looked at me.

"Claire, you don't understand. If Amelia becomes the primary beneficiary, everything changes. I won't have control over the company.""

I stared at him.

"She's your daughter.""

"Exactly!""

His voice cracked.

"She's my daughter. I should have a say.""

"You wanted to control her inheritance before she was even born.""

"I wanted to protect my position.""

The admission hung in the air.

Vivian suddenly spoke.

"And what about me?""

Marcus turned.

"Not now.""

"You promised me the company!""

"Vivian, shut up.""

She stepped closer.

"You said Claire would lose the trust. You said we'd have everything.""

Marcus grabbed her arm.

"Keep your mouth closed.""

She pulled away.

"Don't touch me!""

The security officer moved between them.

Eleanor looked at Andrea.

"Activate the protective provisions.""

Andrea nodded.

"I'll prepare the necessary notices.""

Marcus's face went pale.

"Mother, you can't do that.""

"I can, and I will.""

Then Andrea's phone rang.

She answered, listened, and slowly looked at me.

"Claire, there's another development.""

"What?""

"The original agreement contains a second beneficiary.""

I frowned.

"Who?""

Andrea glanced at Eleanor.

Then she answered.

"Your father's estate.""

I didn't understand.

"My father is dead.""

"His estate still exists. And according to this document, the trustee must investigate whether any money belonging to you was improperly transferred before Amelia's birth.""

I looked at Marcus.

He had gone completely still.

Because if the investigation established that he had stolen my inheritance, the consequences would extend far beyond the company.

And Eleanor was already reaching for her phone.

"Call the trustee," she said.

"Tell them we need an emergency review.""

Marcus backed toward the door.

"You're making a terrible mistake.""

May you like

Eleanor didn't blink.

"No, son. The mistake was believing I would protect you from the consequences.""
