Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Family Trust

The hospital room smelled of antiseptic and fresh linen.

A fetal monitor sat beside my bed, its steady rhythm filling the silence.

I stared at the ceiling while a nurse adjusted the monitoring belt around my stomach.

"Your baby's heartbeat sounds strong," she said gently.

"The doctor wants to keep you here for observation because you experienced abdominal tightening after the incident.""

I nodded.

"Can I ask you something?""

"Of course.""

"Could stress hurt the baby?""

The nurse gave my hand a reassuring squeeze.

"That's something your doctor can discuss with you. Right now, we're monitoring both of you.""

When she left, I reached for my phone.

There were seventeen missed calls.

Twelve from Marcus.

Four from Eleanor.

One from an unknown number.

I ignored Marcus and called Eleanor.

She answered immediately.

"Claire? How are you feeling?""

"The baby is being monitored. The doctor says everything looks stable so far.""

"Thank God.""

I closed my eyes.

"Eleanor, what did Vivian mean?""

Silence.

Then Eleanor sighed.

"She shouldn't have said that.""

"What does she know about my baby?""

"Claire, I don't want to frighten you before we understand everything.""

"Please don't protect me from the truth. I've had enough of that.""

Another pause.

"All right. But I want you to understand something first. Whatever Marcus has done, none of it changes the fact that your child is innocent.""

I swallowed.

"What agreement did your husband leave?""

Eleanor began explaining.

Years before Marcus and I married, his father, Richard Hale, had established a family trust designed to protect the next generation.

Richard had built Hale Development from a small residential construction business into a regional company with major commercial properties across three states.

He had also watched his own family nearly destroy itself over money.

So he created strict rules.

The trust held controlling shares in several family properties and maintained separate funds for future grandchildren.

When Marcus and I married, Eleanor said, my name had been included in the family protection provisions.

But the most important provision had been activated when I became pregnant.

"Richard believed that the next generation should never be used as leverage in a marital dispute," Eleanor explained.

"What does that mean?""

"It means your child's financial protection cannot be removed because Marcus decides he wants a different wife.""

I stared at the monitor.

"So Vivian can't take anything from the baby?""

"Not legally. But someone has been trying.""

I sat up carefully.

"Who?""

"I don't know yet.""

"Eleanor, Marcus said he wanted to remove me as a beneficiary.""

"Yes.""

"And Vivian was involved.""

"I believe she was.""

I looked down at my wedding ring.

Three years ago, Marcus had slipped it onto my finger in a garden overlooking the ocean.

He had promised that we would never let money come between us.

Now money was the one thing he seemed determined to protect.

"Eleanor, why didn't you tell me about the trust before?""

"Because I wanted you to marry my son for the right reasons, not because of his family's money.""

"That makes sense.""

"And because Richard wanted Marcus to learn how to build a family without depending on the trust.""

I looked toward the hospital window.

"Apparently, he didn't learn.""

"No," Eleanor said quietly.

"He didn't.""

A knock interrupted us.

I expected a nurse.

Instead, a woman in a dark green suit stepped inside carrying a leather briefcase.

"Mrs. Hale?""

"Yes?""

"I'm Andrea Bennett. I'm Eleanor's attorney.""

I pushed myself upright.

"Is something wrong?""

Andrea pulled a chair beside my bed.

"I've reviewed the documents Eleanor brought to the hotel. There are some serious irregularities.""

She opened her briefcase and placed several copies on the bedside table.

"This is the application Marcus submitted to modify the trust.""

I recognized my signature near the bottom.

My stomach dropped.

"That's mine.""

Andrea nodded.

"Yes. But look at the date.""

I leaned closer.

The document was dated May 14.

I remembered May 14.

I had been at home recovering from a difficult prenatal appointment. Marcus had brought me soup and placed a stack of papers on the kitchen island.

He'd told me the company needed updated insurance information.

I had signed where he pointed.

"What's wrong with it?""

Andrea turned the page.

"The application states that you voluntarily agreed to surrender certain beneficiary rights.""

I shook my head.

"I never agreed to that.""

"There's more.""

She placed another page in front of me.

"This is a separate declaration concerning your unborn child.""

I read the first paragraph.

Then I read it again.

My hands began trembling.

The document claimed that I had agreed to allow Marcus sole control over the child's financial interests until the child turned twenty-five.

"That's not true.""

Andrea nodded.

"That's what we suspected.""

"Can you prove it?""

"We're investigating.""

I looked at her.

"Could he have forged my consent?""

Andrea didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she opened a smaller envelope.

"We found something else in the electronic filing history.""

She placed a printed email beside the documents.

The sender was Marcus.

The recipient was Vivian.

The date was May 15.

My eyes moved across the message.

Once Claire signs, the trust amendment should go through. After that, everything will be much easier. We won't have to worry about her controlling the inheritance or the baby.

I stopped breathing.

I read it again.

Then I reached the final sentence.

Just give me a little more time. Once the child is born, I'll have everything arranged.

I pressed my palm against my mouth.

Andrea gently moved the papers away.

"Claire, please don't push yourself.""

I looked at her.

"Was he planning to take my baby's inheritance?""

"We don't know the full extent of the plan yet.""

"Then find out.""

Andrea nodded.

"I will.""

A moment later, my phone vibrated.

A message from Marcus appeared.

We need to talk. Stop letting my mother fill your head with nonsense.

Another message followed.

Come home tonight. I'll explain everything.

I stared at the screen.

Then a third message arrived.

If you make this ugly, you'll regret it.

Andrea saw my expression.

"Is that him?""

I handed her the phone.

She read the messages and immediately took a photograph of the screen.

"Don't respond yet.""

I nodded.

But my hands were shaking for a different reason now.

Not because I was afraid of losing Marcus.

Because I was beginning to understand that the man who had kissed my stomach every night might have been planning to use our unborn child as a financial instrument.

A few minutes later, Eleanor arrived.

She walked straight to my bedside and kissed my forehead.

"How are you, sweetheart?""

I showed her the email.

She read it without speaking.

Then she placed the paper down with deliberate care.

"Richard was right," she whispered.

"About what?""

"About Marcus.""

I frowned.

Eleanor pulled the chair closer.

"Before Richard died, he told me that Marcus had become obsessed with the family fortune. He worried that my son would eventually confuse love with ownership.""

"Did Marcus know you had concerns?""

"Yes. That's why Richard placed certain protections beyond my control.""

I looked at Andrea.

"What protections?""

She exchanged a glance with Eleanor.

Then she opened her briefcase and removed a sealed document.

"This is the original trust provision," she explained.

"It contains a clause that becomes active when the expected heir is born.""

I stared at the envelope.

"What does it say?""

Andrea carefully opened it.

She read the first paragraph, then stopped.

Her eyebrows lifted.

Eleanor leaned forward.

"What is it?""

Andrea looked directly at me.

"There's a provision naming the child's mother as temporary guardian of the trust's voting rights.""

I blinked.

"Me?""

"Yes. And there's another condition.""

"What condition?""

Andrea turned the page.

"If the father is found to have attempted to fraudulently transfer or conceal trust assets before the child's birth, his authority over those assets can be suspended immediately.""

I felt my pulse quicken.

"Then Marcus could lose control of the company?""

"Potentially, yes.""

Eleanor nodded slowly.

"Which explains why he was so desperate to get you to sign.""

I stared at the document.

Suddenly, the hotel meeting made sense.

The divorce papers. Vivian's confidence. Marcus's insistence that I leave before his mother arrived.

They hadn't simply wanted me out of the marriage.

They wanted me out of the room before Eleanor could explain what my signature actually meant.

Then Andrea's phone rang.

She answered, listened, and her expression tightened.

"Are you certain?""

A pause.

"Send me the document immediately.""

She ended the call.

Eleanor stood.

"What happened?""

Andrea looked at both of us.

"The bank found an additional transfer request submitted yesterday.""

"From Marcus?"" I asked.

"Yes.""

"How much?""

Andrea took a breath.

"Four million dollars.""

My mouth went dry.

"Where was he sending it?""

She turned her phone toward us.

The destination account belonged to a company registered under Vivian Cross's name.

But that wasn't what made my blood run cold.

The account had been opened using a copy of my identification.

And the authorized signature listed beneath my name wasn't mine.

Andrea looked at Eleanor.

"We need to move quickly. If this transfer is completed, the money could disappear.""

Eleanor reached for her phone.

"Call the bank. Freeze every related account.""

Then Andrea's screen lit up again.

A new message had arrived from an unknown number.

She opened it.

Her face went completely still.

"What is it?"" I whispered.

Andrea slowly turned the phone toward me.

The message contained a photograph.

It showed Marcus standing outside a private medical clinic with Vivian.

May you like

Beneath the photograph was one sentence.

*Ask your husband why Vivian has been telling people she's carrying his child.*
